Universal Windows Platform

Welcome to the Windows Platform Developer (WPDev) Feedback site. This feedback forum provides the WPDev community with a channel for feedback on the following topics:

  • Windows developer platform (APIs, runtimes, and controls)
  • Dev Center Store (developer portal, back-end services, reporting/analytics and process)
  • Windows Stores (Windows and Windows Phone)

Your suggestions will be reviewed by the Windows platform developer team, providing feedback to help with planning ideas and to better understand how developers are using the development platform.

What this forum is not intended to cover or capture:

If you’re new to this whole UserVoice thing, we’d like to note two important things about this site: (a) List items (and item rankings) represent community interest in features, and does not represent an actual priority list for the product team; and (b) Suggestions made using this forum will be moderated if they do not actually represent a feature request.

How can we improve the Windows dev platform?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Currently, the platform provides a number of SMS Access from a system eventing perspective (as of Windows Phone 8.1), and Windows Phone supports sms backup/restore for consumers as part of the base OS (Settings → Backup). What we don’t provide is a backup API.

Using SMS events: Check out the Build 2014 session (http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2014/2-518) or MSDN docs on background tasks (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsphone/develop/hh977056.aspx)

Although the capabilities are there from a consumer perspective (the core ask for the suggestion), I’m marking this as ‘Under Review’ for the API perspective. The team is aware of the ask and it is something that is being considered.

      • XNA 5

Please continue to work on XNA. It's a great way for indie game developers like myself to make games and give them to the world. XNA gave us the ability to put our games, easily, on the most popular platforms, and to just dump XNA would be therefor heartbreaking... I implore you to keep working on XNA so we C# developers can still make amazing games!

          • Show a paid app w/ a "trial" option in the "free apps" category

When I create a paid app with a trial option, many users blow right by it because it doesn't show up in the "free" category even though a light version of the app is free (via the trial).

Some people are resorting to the super-inefficient Apple app store method of releasing 2 versions of the app... one that shows up in the "free" category and another that runs as a paid app. The "trial" is a fantastic concept, but it is hobbled by this oversight

            • Allow multiple Microsoft Accounts to manage a Dev Center Publisher account

For corporate accounts, sometimes there is a need for more than 1 live id to access the dev. center. For example, more than 1 person from development team needs access to the portal as well as the development lead. Currently, all these people need to share the same live-id which is totally impractical as it can be a personal live id of a manager and he is not willing to share it with others. It would be really nice if access can be given to other live ids as well!

              • Rate and Review enhancement

The Windows Phone dev center seriously needs an enhancement to Rate and Review options. There are many features that can be added to improve the whole experience from a developer's perspective.

                Web portal enhancements:

                1) Ability for Dev to contact the reviewer
At times a certain feature isn't clear what is going wrong, or additional info is required from the reviewers. Developers should be given ability to communicate option to email reviewers.
If you do not want to display / expose email addresses, consider using Amazon / Ebay member communication mechanism which effectively hides private email address whilst allowing communication. …

                • Enable Offline Storage for Maps Control Tiles

The TileSource class enables developers to provide custom tile sources for the Bing Maps control (such as OpenStreetMap), but requires an absolute URI to provide tiles. Given the frequently disconnected nature of WP7 applications, it would be better if it was possible to provide tiles from isolated storage to enable map downloading and access to maps when offline.

                  • Support File Explorer with transfer to PC option for developers

Sometimes it's usefull to explore and tranfer back files generated in app that's running on phone/emulator back to the developer PC, without additional coding.

Thank you for the commentary thus far. We are not adding this capability into the WPSDK 8.0 tooling release, but know that it is on the consideration list for future Windows Phone releases.

As mentioned in the comments, there are a variety of ways of accomplishing access via the included Isolated Storage Explorer and a variety of community tools. Marking this as ‘under review’ to keep it on the tools team radar for improving this experience in the future.

                    • XAML for live tiles

Allow developers to implement an interface(s) on a user control and "submit" that instead of just filling in a tile data structure. This will make tiles truly "live" and open up the live of WP7 to new applications. This is also completely secure because the runtime can analyze the class (and it's IL) being submitted. A bevy of restrictions can also be heaped on the said user control in order to maintain performance and not sap battery life. Let Live tiles be live, please.

Hi Ananth, we absolutely understand the desirability of this feature. However, our team must carefully balance the power and flexibility that we offer developers, with the consistency and performance of the most prominent screen on the device: Start.

We are currently exploring ways to host a light-weight XAML engine in a memory constrained way, but there are a number of technical limitations making this a non-trivial problem. Memory usage on 512 MB devices, resolving ValueConverters that live within an apps’ assembly, exposing storyboards/animations in a consistent/performant way, are just a few examples. We look forward to updating you once we’ve been able to draw a definitive answer!

                      • Emulate Bad Data Connection - v2.0

I suggest to create another option that alternates "lost of signal" and "bad signal". Create an infinite loop that breakes the connection in a random time. From 1 to 10 sec, for example.

A an ability to the emulator that can emulate a bad data connection so we can discover performance problems before our clients receive it. Things like throttling and dropouts

The new emulators in the Windows Phone 8.1 tooling provide some excellent tools for emulating bad network connections, but there is no option to simulate broken connections

                        • Throttle emulator to hardware specs of phone CPU + GPU

Create an option to simulate hardware specs like CPU+GPU.
                          Dual-core, quad-core, 1.2GHz, 1.5GHz, 2.2GHz, ...
The emulator is very very fast when I'm using it on my i7 4770. It would be good if we can at least optionally reduce the speed of the emulator to better reproduce real world devices.

                          • F# support in .Net native for UWP

There has been some discussion on the blog post http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dotnet/archive/2015/07/30/universal-windows-apps-in-net.aspx?PageIndex=2#comments for supporting F# in the .Net native toolchain for UWP. I had posted this on the VS uservoice site https://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio/suggestions/7542181-add-f-support-for-net-native but it looks like that was the wrong place to do that. I hope the votes that request got will be considered for this. A lot of people are moving to F# PCLs for library code and to be able to use those PCLs in the UWP and get native compilation via .Net native tools would be great.

                            • Add HTTP accept-encoding gzip header support in WebClient

As of now, it's not possible to set the accept-encoding header : it would be so usefull to be able to set gzip compression to save bandwidth especially on 3G !

Thank you for the suggestion and commentary. While we have not fully implemented this capability in the 8.0 release, the team tells me that it is possible to set this for GETs in this release. That being said, please know that this is also definitely on the consideration list for future Windows Phone releases.

Keep those suggestions and votes coming!

Create a tool to migrate as much code that is compatible with universal app and mark with the error that is not compatible. This facilitates a basic migration at first then we can concentrate on improving the app for the new interface.

There are a number of efforts in process to help developers bring their Windows Phone Silverlight apps to the Universal Windows Platform (UWP).

Rudy Huyn has announced an upcoming effort he’s working on to make this possible, and Windows showed off a tool that will help developers bridge their WP Silverlight code into the UWP. More information coming on this as we hear more.

Microsoft Support recommended me to post the issue here. There seems to be a long-standing serious issue with the Store (or possibly the dev portal) which needs to be addressed urgently. There's a history of apps affected by this issue and possibly more apps to be affected in the future if the issue goes unfixed.

The problem starts after a certain app update. The symptoms are as stated in the title. Certain users who had installed the app prior to the problematic update are affected. Fresh users are not affected by this issue. While it is possible to reinstall the…

Please create this option native to TextBox control
It's very usefull in WinForm projects and could speed up development on universal app too.

                                      • Pay non-US developers through local MS office to make tax easier

At the moment, developers planning to sell apps need to have a US tax ID (ITIN, I think?), which can be awkward to get if you're based outside the US. In the AppHub forums, several developers have said that they've paid for certified copies of passports etc to support their applications to the IRS, but are being rejected. Obviously, I'm not keen on starting this process with no guarantee that it will actually work, and I imagine that it's putting off a lot of prospective developers.

Is it practical to pay non-US developers through a local MS office, so that…

                                        • Background Location Tracking in Windows Phone 8.1

Windows Phone 8 apps could run in the background. This feature is not available for Silverlight 8.1 apps. MSDN: "If you need this feature, you should continue to use a Windows Phone 8 app".
What about all the existing sport tracking apps? How can this apps can be upgraded to WP 8.1? Or is there any workaround to track location in background in WP8.1 (Silverlight/WinRT)?
