Universal Windows Platform

Welcome to the Windows Platform Developer (WPDev) Feedback site. This feedback forum provides the WPDev community with a channel for feedback on the following topics:

  • Windows developer platform (APIs, runtimes, and controls)
  • Dev Center Store (developer portal, back-end services, reporting/analytics and process)
  • Windows Stores (Windows and Windows Phone)

Your suggestions will be reviewed by the Windows platform developer team, providing feedback to help with planning ideas and to better understand how developers are using the development platform.

What this forum is not intended to cover or capture:

If you’re new to this whole UserVoice thing, we’d like to note two important things about this site: (a) List items (and item rankings) represent community interest in features, and does not represent an actual priority list for the product team; and (b) Suggestions made using this forum will be moderated if they do not actually represent a feature request.

How can we improve the Windows dev platform?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Please add support for standalone application conversion in Centennial

Presently you can only convert installer packages in .exe or .msi. Please add functionality to convert non-installer packages or standalone applications developed as 32 bit Win apps as well.

    • MDM using push notification

      Hi,
Instead of writing elaborate SyncML services, I would like to do the same using push notification like what is happening in iOS. We can still have DM client and the DM client can react to push messages provided the device is enrolled.

      • Make it harder to decompile sources from appx packages

Windows Phone Silvelight XAPs were signed, so anyone donwloading them through the Store (manual download) could not have easy access to the sources of the app.

Now with Universal apps / WinRT (.appx), our binaries are not longer signed as a whole, any script kiddie can unzip and decompile any app.

That's a huge problem regarding developer investing on the platform.

        • UWP XAML MediaElement auto hide cursor on fullscreen mode

When playing a video using XAML MediaElement the cursor should hide automatically after some seconds. The same way that control panel does.

          • ToUpper property on TextBox

Please create this option native to TextBox control
It's very usefull in WinForm projects and could speed up development on universal app too.

            • Allow Developers to 'roll back' to a previous update without re-certification

Occasionally an update to an app gets past developer & certification testing and is released into the wild. Even if the bug is an easy fix for the developer it will take the certification team the standard 4+ days to certify the new build and publish it.

Instead of this we should be allowed to roll back to a previously published version without going through certification. That way the users will be back on a stable release (or will not be prompted for an update if they were still on the previous release) and the developer will not feel rushed…

Thanks folks for the suggestion and the on-going commentary. We’re marking this as ‘under review’ to acknowledge that the team is aware of this request. This is a very complicated/hard item for implementation, and there is a general feel that the new accelerated certification process alleviates much of the need (as an update can be published, for most folks, in less than an hour – rather than in 4 days).

That being said, continue to weigh in on the comments section.

              • Add TileMode and View* properties on TileBrush

In WinRT, the TileBrush class is missing the TileMode and View* properties that are present in other frameworks like WPF and Silverlight. Please add these properties so that we can support image tiling properly.

There are tons of requests for this over the past years. See this thread for an example:

                • x:Bind To ImageSource Support Support System.Uri

When using the old style binding ({Binding}) of an Image.Source property to a view model property, the vm property can be either a string or a Uri (in additon to an actual image source), implicit conversion is done.
When using {x:Bind} it appears only strings are supported for implicit conversion. Trying to bind to a Uri will either throw an exception or give a compiler error (I can't remember which) and certainly won't display an image.

Code analysis will often warn if you expose a properlty as a uri using a string type (can be ignored, but CA is giving…

We understand this feedback. With the Anniversary Edition SDK, we enable ‘function bindings’ which can help to ease some of this that you can essentially call your own conversion methods in the binding like {x:Bind ConvertToUri(’’)} and write whatever code you want in the conversion function. We will continue to look at best areas for implicit converters though.

                  • Add Markup Extensions to (and Improve) WinRT Xaml System (System.Xaml Parity)

Much effort was made in WPF Xaml Serialization to decouple it from the presentation assemblies and moved into its own assemblies, System.Xaml, and System.Windows.Markup.

This Xaml System had it's own serialization/deserialization mechanism in XamlServices class. Furthermore, this Xaml system had a very powerful component/concept that is conspicuously absent in WinRT: Markup Extensions.

Markup Extensions are found in the following Xaml Systems:
                    - WPF
                    - Silverlight 5
                    - Xamarin.Forms (notably NOT a Microsoft technology, but recognizes their power nonetheless)

This feature is to ask for Xaml serialization featureset parity with WPF/System.Xaml. That means:
                    - Custom Markup Extensions
                    - XamlServices.Load and Save …

                      • XAML for live tiles

Allow developers to implement an interface(s) on a user control and "submit" that instead of just filling in a tile data structure. This will make tiles truly "live" and open up the live of WP7 to new applications. This is also completely secure because the runtime can analyze the class (and it's IL) being submitted. A bevy of restrictions can also be heaped on the said user control in order to maintain performance and not sap battery life. Let Live tiles be live, please.

It’s great to see that XAML for Live Tiles is so highly requested!

In Windows 10, we created Adaptive Tile Notifications, which partially addresses this issue. Adaptive is a lightweight XML way to define your tile notification’s appearance. It isn’t as powerful as XAML, and it isn’t animated, but it’s a step in the right direction. The MSN Weather app uses Adaptive to create their rich and beautiful live tile.

Learn more about Adaptive here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tiles_and_toasts/archive/2015/06/30/adaptive-tile-templates-schema-and-documentation.aspx

In the future, we’ll definitely look at how we can make Live Tiles even better, potentially by supporting XAML. There are performance and other implementation issues, but we definitely understand the need for it.

                          Thanks!

                          • Add a SavePng extension to WriteableBitmap (similar to SaveJpeg)

When you create a tile dynamically, it is common to want to save it as a Png file so that it uses transparency (so that it respects the theme accent color).
However, there is no built in method to save a WriteableBitmap as a png.
There is however a nice extension to save it to jpg, but that doesn't help if you want to use transparency to leverage the theme accent color in your tile.

I think many apps that need to generate a tile dynamically will encounter this issue.

                            • Implement System.ComponentModel.TypeConverter in WinRT APIs

TypeConverter is helpful because it allows the author of a type to provide intrinsic support for determining to/from which types a type may be converted and actually converting between types - most typically for converting to/from string but other types as well.

                              • make it possible to declare an OnClick event for live tiles

Make it possible to optionally declare a function OnClick() for live tiles, such that this code is executed when the live tiles is presed without leaving the home screen. Think about WiFi toggles, music controls, unmute/ mute etc.

                                • Let an app know if it's pinned

At the moment there's no way for an app to know if its primary live tile is visible or not. As half the point of my app is the information on the live tile, I'd like to have a polite reminder show every so often if they haven't pinned it, but I simply don't know whether they have or not.

                                  • Windows 8 like Search Contract for Search Button

It would be nice to have a SearchContract so the Bing Key could be more usefull. You could enter you search term and either press enter to bing for it or scroll down a list of search contract enabled applications blow the Textbox and tap the application you want to search. Of cause the nice images in the background wouldn't make that much sense anymore but the usabilty would be a lot better.

                                    • DataAnnotations in WP8.1 WinRT - Validation

Bring System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations namespace to Windows Phone 8.1 (WinRT) to allow client side validation like for Windows Store apps.

                                      • Vector Tiles, App List icons, and App Bar icons

It would be nice to see Windows Phone move to optional vector based icons instead of static bitmaps.

This would allow the application bar (or appbar) to resize if say HD screens were added.

Ideally, users would only need 2 icons for the marketplace: 'Tile' (contains the application name), and 'List' (just the icon for the app list). Appbars could be created at 48x48 and resized as needed.

I know this is a pain on developers that are not designers or have designers, but an option would be nice time saver for the future. Currently I know of developers creating…

Thanks for this suggestion! We totally understand that there’s a ton of icons at various sizes that you have to create when building a new app. In the future, we will look at how we can improve this experience (vector images would likely be the solution).

In the meantime, here’s two great resources that help generate all the various scale factor images…
