Universal Windows Platform

Welcome to the Windows Platform Developer (WPDev) Feedback site. This feedback forum provides the WPDev community with a channel for feedback on the following topics:

  • Windows developer platform (APIs, runtimes, and controls)
  • Dev Center Store (developer portal, back-end services, reporting/analytics and process)
  • Windows Stores (Windows and Windows Phone)

Your suggestions will be reviewed by the Windows platform developer team, providing feedback to help with planning ideas and to better understand how developers are using the development platform.

What this forum is not intended to cover or capture:

If you’re new to this whole UserVoice thing, we’d like to note two important things about this site: (a) List items (and item rankings) represent community interest in features, and does not represent an actual priority list for the product team; and (b) Suggestions made using this forum will be moderated if they do not actually represent a feature request.

How can we improve the Windows dev platform?

  1. Allow alarms to break through Quiet Hours

    Hello.
My alarm app which uses alarm-scenario toasts cannot break through Quiet Hours.

I received plenty, I mean really plenty feedback from users desperately wanting alarms to break through Quiet Hours.

In the future, we’ll look at enabling this! It’s definitely important that third party apps can do the same as first party apps (like how the first party alarm app can break through quiet hours).

Thanks for all the votes! If you also need this feature for your app, let us know by voting!

      • Allow Developers to 'roll back' to a previous update without re-certification

Occasionally an update to an app gets past developer & certification testing and is released into the wild. Even if the bug is an easy fix for the developer it will take the certification team the standard 4+ days to certify the new build and publish it.

Instead of this we should be allowed to roll back to a previously published version without going through certification. That way the users will be back on a stable release (or will not be prompted for an update if they were still on the previous release) and the developer will not feel rushed…

Thanks folks for the suggestion and the on-going commentary. We’re marking this as ‘under review’ to acknowledge that the team is aware of this request. This is a very complicated/hard item for implementation, and there is a general feel that the new accelerated certification process alleviates much of the need (as an update can be published, for most folks, in less than an hour – rather than in 4 days).

That being said, continue to weigh in on the comments section.

        • XAML for live tiles

Allow developers to implement an interface(s) on a user control and "submit" that instead of just filling in a tile data structure. This will make tiles truly "live" and open up the live of WP7 to new applications. This is also completely secure because the runtime can analyze the class (and it's IL) being submitted. A bevy of restrictions can also be heaped on the said user control in order to maintain performance and not sap battery life. Let Live tiles be live, please.

It’s great to see that XAML for Live Tiles is so highly requested!

In Windows 10, we created Adaptive Tile Notifications, which partially addresses this issue. Adaptive is a lightweight XML way to define your tile notification’s appearance. It isn’t as powerful as XAML, and it isn’t animated, but it’s a step in the right direction. The MSN Weather app uses Adaptive to create their rich and beautiful live tile.

Learn more about Adaptive here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tiles_and_toasts/archive/2015/06/30/adaptive-tile-templates-schema-and-documentation.aspx

In the future, we’ll definitely look at how we can make Live Tiles even better, potentially by supporting XAML. There are performance and other implementation issues, but we definitely understand the need for it.

            Thanks!

          • Show a paid app w/ a "trial" option in the "free apps" category

When I create a paid app with a trial option, many users blow right by it because it doesn't show up in the "free" category even though a light version of the app is free (via the trial).

Some people are resorting to the super-inefficient Apple app store method of releasing 2 versions of the app... one that shows up in the "free" category and another that runs as a paid app. The "trial" is a fantastic concept, but it is hobbled by this oversight

              • Live tile animations or live tile from xaml

Live tiles are great. Would prefer some way to great animated live tiles like the Xbox games or music apps.

Also good if we have a convenient way to create live tiles from xaml. Currently need to generate a bitmap image which not works well for list, etc...

                • Console application model in UWP platform

UWP platform lack classic console application model.
Why it's important? First example when it would be useful are unit tests that can be started on build server, powershell script or some other automatic tool. Console app model is a natural way to handle things in many use cases. What is most important, these console UWP apps would be built for and run on UWP platform and so it would be a perfect for testing or automation purposes if UWP platform is exactly needed. For mobile devices it would be perfect to use "remote console" feature, so desktop development environment would…

                  • UWP TextBox FontWeight changes when an input suggestion is selected from the Touch Keyboard

I have a TextBox in a UWP app with custom styling to set the font size, weight and colour. I have no defined InputScope declared on the field.

If the user enters text using the touch keyboard it is styled correctly as defined in the styles, but if he or she selects one of the keyboard's autocomplete suggestions that text (and any text thereafter) uses a different FontWeight (Normal instead of Light).

There is nothing in the live visual tree to suggest that a new inline element has been added to the display container to further debug this issue.

                    It…

                        • Add Markup Extensions to (and Improve) WinRT Xaml System (System.Xaml Parity)

Much effort was made in WPF Xaml Serialization to decouple it from the presentation assemblies and moved into its own assemblies, System.Xaml, and System.Windows.Markup.

This Xaml System had it's own serialization/deserialization mechanism in XamlServices class. Furthermore, this Xaml system had a very powerful component/concept that is conspicuously absent in WinRT: Markup Extensions.

Markup Extensions are found in the following Xaml Systems:
                          - WPF
                          - Silverlight 5
                          - Xamarin.Forms (notably NOT a Microsoft technology, but recognizes their power nonetheless)

This feature is to ask for Xaml serialization featureset parity with WPF/System.Xaml. That means:
                          - Custom Markup Extensions
                          - XamlServices.Load and Save …

Appx shortcuts do not support command line arguments. This is an issue for building Centennial apps that need them.

                              A solution is needed.

                              • TextBox Property to Show/Hide Delete Button

Depending on the app, we do not always want to show the built-in delete buttons for a TextBox (the X on the right edge of the TextBox). I have, in multiple scenarios, had to create a ControlTemplate to avoid displaying the Delete Button. I think there should be a property (maybe something like ShowDeleteButton) that allows you to specify whether the Delete button is displayed. This property would have values Show, Hide, and Auto (or maybe a nullable Boolean).

Currently, the platform provides a number of SMS Access from a system eventing perspective (as of Windows Phone 8.1), and Windows Phone supports sms backup/restore for consumers as part of the base OS (Settings → Backup). What we don’t provide is a backup API.

Using SMS events: Check out the Build 2014 session (http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2014/2-518) or MSDN docs on background tasks (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsphone/develop/hh977056.aspx)

Although the capabilities are there from a consumer perspective (the core ask for the suggestion), I’m marking this as ‘Under Review’ for the API perspective. The team is aware of the ask and it is something that is being considered.

                                  • Splash screen for UWP apps should be optional

Currently you have to provide a Splash Screen to get your app to pass the certification kit, which should really be a developer's choice like before.

                                    Splash screens are evil.

You don't have to agree with me and all the links above, but at least make it optional.

                                    • Make it harder to decompile sources from appx packages

Windows Phone Silvelight XAPs were signed, so anyone donwloading them through the Store (manual download) could not have easy access to the sources of the app.

Now with Universal apps / WinRT (.appx), our binaries are not longer signed as a whole, any script kiddie can unzip and decompile any app.

That's a huge problem regarding developer investing on the platform.

                                      • WebView sub/popup/multi-window handling improvement

Please implement possibility for developer to handle (popup) window user flow. This is mainly useful for OAuth 3rd party authentication that is typically not under control of a developer.

Today there is a handler for NewWindowRequested to create new window, but there seems to be no way to handle window.close() call from javascript for example.

Requesting full implementation of the tools for the case, including support to handle window opening, closing (window.close), window.opener (parenthood) info, messaging (window.postMessage).

                                        • active installations Vs total downloads

It would be good to know not only the number of downloads but also how many are active still.
If you have seen the google store they show active installations more prominently than total download count - and that actually makes sense considering the amount of trash apps going around in all the phone o/s .
