Universal Windows Platform

Welcome to the Windows Platform Developer (WPDev) Feedback site. This feedback forum provides the WPDev community with a channel for feedback on the following topics:

  • Windows developer platform (APIs, runtimes, and controls)
  • Dev Center Store (developer portal, back-end services, reporting/analytics and process)
  • Windows Stores (Windows and Windows Phone)

Your suggestions will be reviewed by the Windows platform developer team, providing feedback to help with planning ideas and to better understand how developers are using the development platform.

What this forum is not intended to cover or capture:

If you’re new to this whole UserVoice thing, we’d like to note two important things about this site: (a) List items (and item rankings) represent community interest in features, and does not represent an actual priority list for the product team; and (b) Suggestions made using this forum will be moderated if they do not actually represent a feature request.

How can we improve the Windows dev platform?

  1. SMS Access API

Please provide an API that provides access to the texts to allow developers to implement an application to enable scenarios such as reading or archiving SMS messages.

Currently, the platform provides a number of SMS Access from a system eventing perspective (as of Windows Phone 8.1), and Windows Phone supports sms backup/restore for consumers as part of the base OS (Settings → Backup). What we don’t provide is a backup API.

Using SMS events: Check out the Build 2014 session (http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2014/2-518) or MSDN docs on background tasks (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsphone/develop/hh977056.aspx)

Although the capabilities are there from a consumer perspective (the core ask for the suggestion), I’m marking this as ‘Under Review’ for the API perspective. The team is aware of the ask and it is something that is being considered.

    • API for Direct phone interaction [dialing, sending/answering, replying/recording, playing to, hooking up/filtering Phone call]

Without these APIs, PC and Phone are losing features event had existed in pre-internet age and becoming backward.

When a feature is useful and eases user's pain of doing monotone taping, the security excuse seems a red herring; you can always find a way to do it and there were/are devices could/can do it, why not the Windows Phone, because Apple doesn’t do it?

      • API to send SMS (via code without user input)

Me and two friends of mine created an app that won in a Windows Hackathon held by Microsoft Cyprus. We actually won the Hackathon without finishing our app due to limitations of Windows phone API. We need some sort of API to automatically send an SMS. The reason for it to be automatic is because this is for cases when the owner of the phone is unable (asleep or something similar) to do so. If you are concerned about security reasons a good implementation of this API would be to always notify the user that a message from that application…

        • Kindly open API for Call / SMS Blocking or Filtering.

I have Nokia Lumia phones. The current option to Block calls / SMS is very limited.

In Meego platform, there is this excellent Call/Text Blocking feature called FirewallPlus Pro (http://store.ovi.com/content/260573).

The developer of the said app would like to bring his app to Windows Phone. But he said the current API's in WP is too restrictive that it's impossible to create a Windows Phone version of his app.

If Windows Phone is being pushed to Enterprise markets, shouldn't this very basic feature be allowed? After all, who wants SPAM calls and SMS? Shouldn't we have more options to…

          • API to detect incoming call and incoming number.

API to detect incoming call and number so it can be blocked if not necessary and also can ring even in silent if it is important.

            • Event after call ended with call informartion

A event that triggers after a call has ended with: Phone nr and Call Length, also giving an opportunity to display an app screen.

Would be great for various business scenarios.

              • Allow debugging suspend when picking a file

This is my personal "favourite": mobile - file open picker - the app suspends but it cannot be debugged. All sorts of surprises can happen with a complex app.

                  • Add PhoneCallOrigin property in PhoneCallHistoryEntry

In Windows 10 Mobile, any third-party app can act as a Caller-ID app to intercept the call and set the PhoneCallOrigin. But other apps cannot access PhoneCallOrigin from PhoneCallHistoryEntry.

                    • Allow non-1st party developers use smsreceived trigger

I understand you have security considerations to consider, however i cannot think of any reason we should not be able to check if a sms is received.
