Universal Windows Platform

Welcome to the Windows Platform Developer (WPDev) Feedback site. This feedback forum provides the WPDev community with a channel for feedback on the following topics:

  • Windows developer platform (APIs, runtimes, and controls)
  • Dev Center Store (developer portal, back-end services, reporting/analytics and process)
  • Windows Stores (Windows and Windows Phone)

Your suggestions will be reviewed by the Windows platform developer team, providing feedback to help with planning ideas and to better understand how developers are using the development platform.

What this forum is not intended to cover or capture:

If you’re new to this whole UserVoice thing, we’d like to note two important things about this site: (a) List items (and item rankings) represent community interest in features, and does not represent an actual priority list for the product team; and (b) Suggestions made using this forum will be moderated if they do not actually represent a feature request.

How can we improve the Windows dev platform?

  1. Network Service for monitoring

The existing ConnectionHelper provides a few basic properties that query underlying NetworkInformation class provided by SDK.

The ConnectionHelper does not follow best practices or advice as documented on MSDN https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows.networking.connectivity.connectionprofile.getnetworkconnectivitylevel.aspx which state “The GetNetworkConnectivityLevel method may take time in some cases to determine the current value of the network connectivity level. The recommended process for determining the network connectivity level is to register a handler for the NetworkStatusChanged event on the NetworkInformation class. When a notification is received of a network status change, obtain the new connectivity level by calling the GetNetworkConnectivityLevel method on the profile returned by the GetInternetConnectionProfile…

    • Add support for images and videos for Markdown

It would be nice to add an image display support for Markdown Textblock. It is very lacking to complete the work with this feature

      • Open Services library to Xamarin

The Microsoft.Toolkit.Uwp.Services project should also be usable in a Xamarin environment.

        • Emoji control

Add emoji control to easily render emoji in a page. A single emoji or even a collection of emojis.
Here is the list of Microsoft emojis : http://emojipedia.org/microsoft/

Based on an example (http://emojipedia.org/penguin/), the control should handle at least one of these properties :

          * Unicode (ex: U+1F427)
          * Shortcode (ex: :penguin:)
          * Name/Tag (ex: penguin)

          • Frosted Glass

Add Frosted Glass effect by providing a control similar to DropShadow control. The Frosted Glass is an effect applied on a container layer (Grid, Panel, Canvas) with a beautiful blur/transparency effect (like the Start Menu or the Action Center in Windows 10 Desktop).

            • ViewManagement extension methods

From a developer’s prespective setting properties for TitleBar / StatusBar require use of code behind as there is no declarative support.

              https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/uwp/api/Windows.UI.ViewManagement

We should provide extension such that that would enable developers to set TitleBar and StatusBar from XAML using attachable properties.

              • Export simple project from each sample page

The idea would be to have a "Try" button on every sample. This button will generate a ready to use Visual Studio project with the current sample.

                • Support for fenced code blocks for the MarkdownTextBlock XAML Control

In GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), you can create code blocks using triple backticks (```, see https://help.github.com/articles/creating-and-highlighting-code-blocks/)
While asking for syntax highlighting may be a bit too much at this point, basic support for the triple backtick syntax would be nice. The GFM language specifier behind the backticks could be ignored in the first iteration.

                  • report control

I'm converting some wpf apps to uwp and I'm missing a report control.

A control similar to the FlowDocumentReader/ FlowDocumentScrollViewer would be really awesome!

                    • Pivot Viewer / Control (Silverlight equivalent)

Please add the old Silverlight Pivot Control to UWP toolkit. This control is not to be confused with the existing pivot viewer in UWP.

This control makes a great addition for displaying large amounts of data in a "visual" friendly format.

The control is the equivalent of a pivot table in excel , you simply add the datasets with labels and the control sorts out all the selection fields , visualizations and animations.

                      • Add a clock control inspired by Material Design

I'm currently working on a clock control for my UWP todo-list app 2Day (www.2day-app.com).

I'm creating this control using inspiration from the great Material Design WPF toolkit. The very early work in progress version is available on my repo: https://github.com/japf/uwp-material-clock

Would you be interesting having this control as part of the UWPCommunityToolkit?

If you think that control could be part of the toolkit, we can start discuss the requirements so that I can submit a PR :-)

                        • Support for tables in the MarkdownTextBlock XAML Control

The UWP Community Toolkit Sample App contains a page on how to use the MarkdownTextBlock control. The Markdown text used for demonstrating the features contains code for a table, which unfortunately isn't rendered as a table.

So the output looks like this:

                          > Reddit has the ability to represent tabular data in fancy-looking tables. For example:
                          > some|header|labels :---|:--:|---: Left-justified|center-justified|right-justified a|b|c d|e|f

It would be nice if tables would work.

                          • Saturation

Add support for changing saturation animation. Would be very useful when you for instance want to convert an image to grayscale. There is already a solution for blur, modifying this for to use saturation would be quite easy.

                            • Windows Phone 7/8 Panorama Control

I cannot port my Windows Phone Silverlight App to UWP, because it is depending on the Panorama Control, which is missing in UWP. The panorama control is still the best control for my app and my users love it. Updating the app to UWP is not possible without this control. The Hub control is not a suitable replacement.

If would like to offer some guides to the user in our own application, it could be interesting to have some interesting to be able to show a Popup that give user some indication in the app in a precise scenario (like when discovering a page the first time or when a new feature has been delivered).

                                • In-app Notification History helper

The combination of toasts and Action Center provide a convenient lightweight way to communication with users, but after notifications are read they disappear. Some apps could benefit from an easy way to not only send a toast notification but also maintain a notification history users could view afterwards.

                                    • Integrate Power BI charts

It could be interesting to provide a control to generate and show a Power BI chart inside a UWP application easily with a Control or by code.
