Universal Windows Platform

Welcome to the Universal Windows Platform Developer Feedback site. This site provides the Windows developer community with a channel for feedback on the following topics:

  • Windows developer platform (APIs, runtimes, and controls)
  • Dev Center (dashboard, reporting/analytics, submission process, etc.)
  • Microsoft Store

Your suggestions will be reviewed by the Windows platform developer team to help with planning ideas and to better understand how developers are using the platform.

What this forum is not intended to cover or capture:

  • Windows consumer suggestions: Use the Windows Feedback Hub app built directly into Windows 10
  • Documentation on docs.microsoft.com: Sign in at the bottom of the page to give documentation feedback via Github
  • Visual Studio / .NET: Use the Visual Studio UserVoice site

If you’re new to UserVoice, two things to keep in mind are (a) List items (and item rankings) represent community interest in features, and not the actual priority list for the product team; and (b) Suggestions made using this forum will be moderated if they do not actually represent a feature request (or if too many different ideas are included in one suggestion).

  2. Allow localhost loopback capability in UWP apps deployed to the Microsoft Store

UWP apps currently are not able to access localhost on the same machine that the app is running on. This docs page describes the limitation: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uwp/debug-test-perf/deploying-and-debugging-uwp-apps#debugging-options

When debugging, Visual Studio is capable of adding an exemption for the UWP app, but obviously, this exemption does not apply once the app has been published to the store.

Please add a new capability to UWP apps that allows for them to access localhost.

  3. tool Hyper-V manager to manage easly Hyper-v VMS

    Hello everyone,
after a bigg effort I propose my tool HV-MAN (free), it is a tool that I developed for microsoft, which makes it possible to manage the VMS in a very easy way, it makes possible to change network switch in a few clicks, and also toggle between viewing virtual machines, as well as lists, it connects directly to the virtual machine and you dont need to configure the RDP mode, it also allows to manage a remote server if you are in domain.
the link is as follows: https://inforti.wixsite.com/site/hv-man
    for downloads : https://www.dropbox.com/s/o1alhrhcvuxyl3d/HV-MAN-v2.0.msi?dl=0

    execute it as administrator, his…

  4. BackgroundDownloadProgress.TotalBytesToReceive is always zero in Build 1903

When using the BackgroundTransfer API in Windows 10 Build 1903, BackgroundDownloadProgress.TotalBytesToReceive is always zero.

This means you cannot determine the progress of a download operation and report this back to the UI.

To reproduce, simply download and run the BackgroundTransfer sample application from the Windows Universal Samples project on GitHub:
    https://github.com/microsoft/Windows-universal-samples/tree/master/Samples/BackgroundTransfer

Able to reproduce on a Surface Pro 3 running Win 10 Build 1903.
Does not occur on Windows 10 Build 1809 or earlier.

This is a critical issue which is bound to affect countless apps relying on the BackgroundTransfer API for downloads. May we please request that a fix…

  5. Virtualized RichEditBox

Currently the RichEditBox (or even the RichEditBlock, or even the TextBlock) are not virtualized. As a result with a moderate amount of runs in the box it becomes almost unusable slow near 4000-5000 lines.

The request is, create a virtualized RichEditBox that is capable of handling large files.

  6. Improve the XAML UI render performance

The UI render performace is not good, despite of you follow the XAML optimization guides there is scenarios where you have to render a big visual tree, for example more than 8000 items, and in this cases the UI freezes when is loading the visual tree. The UI freezing is the major issue I see in UWP and seems to not be improving, and I'm working with this platform from the first day.

  7. Allowing custom air drop UI while dragging items of a ListView

I've a listview that is set to "AllowDrop=true". When the items are dragged over within the listview, the XAML infrastructure gives room (ie:- by moving items automatically) indicating where it can potentially be dropped. The current infrastructure doesn't have a provision to implement a custom air drop UI like "Drop items here" except for DragUIOverride. Having this feature would improve the user experience as it gives even more clear message to the users on where to drop when the items are dragged over.

  8. Allow API AppointmentCalendar.SaveAppointmentAsync to create appointments in an Offce 365 calendar

Currently AppointmentCalendar.SaveAppointmentAsync works correctly with Exchange calendar and Google calendar (and maybe others calendar providers) but does not work with Office 365 calendar as stated in thread https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsapps/en-US/710e8168-1cc3-4ee9-bf22-45179b0767b1/uwp-app-is-not-able-to-create-appointments-in-an-office-365-calendar?forum=wpdevelop.

Allow API AppointmentCalendar.SaveAppointmentAsync to create appointment in an Offce 365 calendar, and more, allow all API of AppointmentCalendar to work correctly with an Office 635 calendar.

  9. WebView - allow retrieval of cookies

There should be the ability to retrieve cookies. This can be done already using something like:
    `string cookies = webView.InvokeScriptAsync("eval", "document.cookie");`
but this technique will not work for cookies marked as 'HTML only' - which would be the case with most secure cookies.

  10. Support .Net Standard 2.0 File IO APIs in UWP

Currently it is not possible for us to use third party libraries that use .Net Standard 2.0 File APIs in UWP apps. It would make sense to all access to these APIs when using broadFileSystem Access permission.

  11. Allow C# style boolean conversion with x:Bind

With x:Bind we can invert a boolean property with a ValueConverter like this:

    Visibility="{x:Bind IsLoading,Converter="{StaticResource BooleanInverseConverter}"

But wouldn't it be much cleaner for that widely used boolean case to write just this:

    Visibility="{x:Bind !IsLoading}"

To generated the code should be possible, and also to check in that generation whether IsLoading is a boolean or not. Even without checking, it won't compile if IsLoading wouldn't be a boolean, which is fine.

    Thanks,
    Thomas

  12. VpnPlugin and StreamWebSocket support

When StreamWebSocket will be supported in VpnPlugin?

I am trying to implement VPN Plugin with websocket transport.
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/uwp/api/windows.networking.vpn.ivpnplugin
    But when I call
    channel.AssociateTransport(tunnel, nullptr) with StreamWebSocket tunnel
    in my method
    void VpnPlugin::Connect(VpnChannel const& channel)
    I get only error 80070057.
I have looked into binary and have seen only IDatagramSocket and IStreamSocket GUIDs in internal method SetBestCostInterfaceOnTransport.
But how can I use StreamWebSocket socket, as documentation promises:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/uwp/api/windows.networking.vpn.vpnchannel.addandassociatetransport

An IInspectable object for socket transport. This object can be a Windows.Networking.StreamSocket, a Windows.Networking.StreamWebSocket, or a Windows.Networking.DatagramSocket. This socket will control the connection to the VPN server and will be used to send…

  13. Allow drawing of basic shapes (lines, triangles, ... ) on MapControl in a 3d layer

Let us draw non static basic shapes on the MapControl over the 3d view but not stuck to the terrain. Shapes that can be changed anytime needed and with altitudes different to the ground level.

  14. Very poor performance of IStorageQueryResultBase.ContentsChanged

I am trying to watch a large number of folders for changes using IStorageQueryResultBase.ContentsChanged. However, this is basically impossible due to performance issues. First of all, there is no option to make this fire only on 'rename' events (file creation, deletion or renaming), which is what I want, and it seems to fire multiple times even when there are no changes - for example opening a file open dialog from my app can cause it to fire. Also, it seems to watch for deep changes even though my query is shallow.

Now onto the main issue. Removing this handler seems…

  15. TextBlock should not be sealed

Sealed classes fly in the face of OOD, so there should be an incontrovertible reason for making a class sealed. I don't accept the rational that sealing the class makes it perform better. If you don't want the performance hit of virtual methods, then don't make them virtual. There's no justification for sealing the entire class.

  16. Focus Assist API

The Focus Assist settings for Off/Priority Only/Alarms Only should be allowed to be queried and updated so that productivity apps can take advantage of the DND mode for cross-device focus sessions.

  17. Add an API to retrieve all files from a folder that matches the speed of Win32 call

With UWP, getting the file count for 8k files using CreateFileQueryWithOptions or GetFilesAsync on a SSD will take 9 seconds.
With WPF, getting the same file count using dirInfo.GetFiles will take 10 milliseconds.

  18. Allow audio from background task without requiring foreground activation

I would like to have the ability to play audio from background task without requiring the app to be in foreground first.

Both android and iOS have this feature. This is a road block for alarm clock apps that require custom audio uploaded by the user to be played.

    Details here.

  19. Universal XAML

Universal XAML - Embrace UNO UWP and extend it.

Make possible for Developers to use the same XAML dialect on Web, Mobile, Desktop and IoT Applications

Also make all this work with all .NET languages, including F#

  20. Support of SQL Server Express LocalDB

It would be nice if UWP would support LocalDb as an alternative to SqlLite. The last has many restrictions and lack of features e.g. "Change Tracking".
