Universal Windows Platform

Welcome to the Universal Windows Platform Developer Feedback site. This site provides the Windows developer community with a channel for feedback on the following topics:

  • Windows developer platform (APIs, runtimes, and controls)
  • Dev Center (dashboard, reporting/analytics, submission process, etc.)
  • Microsoft Store

Your suggestions will be reviewed by the Windows platform developer team to help with planning ideas and to better understand how developers are using the platform.

What this forum is not intended to cover or capture:

  • Windows consumer suggestions: Use the Windows Feedback Hub app built directly into Windows 10
  • Documentation on docs.microsoft.com: Sign in at the bottom of the page to give documentation feedback via Github
  • Visual Studio / .NET: Use the Visual Studio UserVoice site

If you’re new to UserVoice, two things to keep in mind are (a) List items (and item rankings) represent community interest in features, and not the actual priority list for the product team; and (b) Suggestions made using this forum will be moderated if they do not actually represent a feature request (or if too many different ideas are included in one suggestion).

How can we improve the Windows dev platform?

  1. Allow localhost loopback capability in UWP apps deployed to the Microsoft Store

    UWP apps currently are not able to access localhost on the same machine that the app is running on. This docs page describes the limitation: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uwp/debug-test-perf/deploying-and-debugging-uwp-apps#debugging-options

    When debugging, Visual Studio is capable of adding an exemption for the UWP app, but obviously, this exemption does not apply once the app has been published to the store.

    Please add a new capability to UWP apps that allows for them to access localhost.

    • Allow C# style boolean conversion with x:Bind

      With x:Bind we can invert a boolean property with a ValueConverter like this:

      Visibility="{x:Bind IsLoading,Converter="{StaticResource BooleanInverseConverter}"

      But wouldn't it be much cleaner for that widely used boolean case to write just this:

      Visibility="{x:Bind !IsLoading}"

      To generated the code should be possible, and also to check in that generation whether IsLoading is a boolean or not. Even without checking, it won't compile if IsLoading wouldn't be a boolean, which is fine.

      Thanks,
      Thomas

      • Enable the Windows 10 Hyper-V Default Switch to work with Cisco AnyConnect

        The following Hyper-V networking Configuration breaks DNS name resolution on the Virtual Machine:
        1. Connecting the host to a non-corporate (remote) WiFi network.
        2. Connecting to the corporate network via Cisco AnyConnect on the host.
        3. Start a VM and connect it to the Default Switch (NAT)

        When a VM is connected to the default switch and the host is connected to the corporate network via Cisco AnyConnect, the VM looses the ability to resolve DNS addresses. The VM is able to ping both public addresses and corporate addresses; however, it is unable to resolve names on either the public…

          We’re investigating how to best handle VPN and add more configuration around VPN.

          Please:
          1) Upvote if this is important to you. That helps us prioritize.
          2) Let us know which VPN technology you’re using/care most about.
          3) Explain what behavior you’d like to see.

          I want to add a context menue for *.jpg files to my app without setting the app as default app for *.jpg files.

          For example, my app wants to add the context menue "resize images" for jpg files. But I don't want to set it as default app for jpgs, as the app isn't capable for viewing images.

          • No user-consent prompt on first run of broadFileSystemAccess-capable UWP app

            When running an app which requires broadFileSystemAccess capabilities, no user-consent prompt appears on the first use. Instead, the app crashes with a System.UnauthorizedAccessException. Going into Settings to enable this privacy permission prevents the crash, and the app works normally. However, there is no prompt to enable this permission as described in the docs.

              We are working on it. We are working on updating docs and adding in the prompt like other restricted items.

              A code pattern like this should be a way to catch this scenario.
              {
              StorageFolder folder = await StorageFolder.GetFolderFromPathAsync(@"C:\Foo");
              }
              catch(Exception)
              {
              // prompt user for what action they should do then launch below
              // suggestion could be a message prompt
              await Launcher.LaunchUriAsync(new Uri(“ms-settings:appsfeatures-app”));
              }

            • Add an API to retrieve all files from a folder that matches the speed of Win32 call

              With UWP, getting the file count for 8k files using CreateFileQueryWithOptions or GetFilesAsync on a SSD will take 9 seconds.
              With WPF, getting the same file count using dirInfo.GetFiles will take 10 milliseconds.

              • AutoSuggestBox should have SelectAll() method like TextBox

                In UWP, TextBox has a method called SelectAll() that selects all the text in the Text property of the TextBox control. AutoSuggestBox should have the a method that performs the same action.

                • WebAuthenticationBroker in SilentMode does not work on IoT Core

                  I'm using WebAuthenticationBroker like this:

                  var logoutResult = await WebAuthenticationBroker.AuthenticateAsync(WebAuthenticationOptions.SilentMode, targetUri);

                  When I run this on a Windows 10 machine it works as expected and logs out the user. When I run it on IoT Core, it does nothing. If I inspect the WebAuthenticationResult, I see:

                  ResponseData: ""
                  ResponseErrorDetail: 0
                  ResponseStatus: ErrorHttp

                  When I listen to the HTTP traffic with Fiddler, I don't even see the request being made when using SilentMode.

                  If I change the option to UseHttpPost or UseTitle, it works, but it's a poor UX given the design of our application.

                  • Autosuggestbox AutoSuggestionBoxTextChangeReason is always UserInput.

                    [UWP] While following the tutorial at the Microsoft Docs on how to proper create an AutoSuggestBox, when using the SuggestionChosen event handler to change the Text property of the AutoSuggestBox, the TextChanged event is raised with the AutoSuggestionBoxBoxTextChangeReason set to UserInput, even though it was changed via code. The tutorial says it that it should raise it as ProgrammaticChange, and yet that doesn't happen.
                    Currently on Windows 10 Pro Build 18309 SDK Version 10.0.17763.132 using Visual Studio 2019 Version 16.0.0 Preview 1.1.

                    • FeedbackHub link is broken in Windows 10 1809

                      If you set project target version to 1809 and you try to use this official example for launching feedback hub:

                      https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uwp/monetize/launch-feedback-hub-from-your-app

                      It will crash the app. Here is also full code example of this problem: https://1drv.ms/u/s!ArB5XyXKJ9ZWhjheAPPpeRA1rBWe

                      It's very problematic because now 1809 is available almost everyone and feedback hub launch link itself is broken in 1809. I had to revert it to 1803 to get it working.

                      • Stabilize Virtual Desktop API

                        Currently there's a set of COM APIs, that provide access to Virtual Desktop-related features, like pinning apps to desktops, switching desktops, etc. Unfortunately, most of it is undocumented, and does not seem to be stabilized (2018 Spring Update for instance changed IApplicationView's CLSID, so apps using it stopped working).

                        • StorageFile.GetThumbnailAsync doesn't wait for thumbnail to be generated

                          Calling StorageFile.GetThumbnailAsync(ThumbnailMode.SingleItem, desiredSize) doesn't wait for the thumbnail to be generated. If there isn't one already cached, it will return an icon instead. Disposing the stream then waiting for 6 seconds then trying again correctly returns a thumbnail.

                            UWP desktop app targeting Windows 17763, requesting and being granted an extendedExecutionSession can target the vibration motors through a windows.gaming.input.gamepad's Vibration interface but once the app gets minimized applying the Vibration property silently fails.

                            • Some children are not shown in stack panel

                              Here's a minimal Github Repo I created to reproduce the problem.

                              *******

                              I have a listview whose items panel is set to StackPanel since I need to set the group style panel to a staggered panel which doesn't work well with item stack panel.

                              The problem now is, out of 27 groups, only 16 groups are shown. I tested it on another list view and I confirmed that the problem is that the stack panel only displays a limited number of children (the strange thing is it's not 16 on my test but 22).

                              I tried VirtualizingStackPanel but unlike StackPanel,…

                                • Make GetBasicPropertiesAsync and functions of StorageFile.Properties thread-safe and/or provide a lightweight way to clone a StorageFile

                                  Currently StorageFile.GetBasicPropertiesAsync and functions on StorageFile.Properties will fail if other async operations are in progress on the file (except RetrievePropertiesAsync, which thankfully works Ok). This is very difficult to manage in a complex app where StorageFile objects may be passed around, perhaps between threads as well, although the problem occurs with just one UI thread as well.

                                  It would be good if these functions did not fail if called simultaneously, but behaved as they would if you called them from two different StorageFile instances representing the same physical file.

                                  This is made especially difficult by the fact that there is…

                                  • Provide a way to mark a Store submission as a bug fix so it can skip or fast-track certification

                                    From my recent experiences it seems that an app submission can pass certification with no problems, but then a subsequent submission that only makes a very minor code change such as bug fix can fail certification. I accept that this will probably happen in general because full checks cannot be applied every time and different testers may pick up on different things.

                                    However, it concerns me that one day I will run into the following hypothetical scenario:
                                    I release a major app update which passes certification fine. I then notice a critical bug in the app which I need to…

                                    • Bug: No crash dump for side-loaded HoloLens app when crash dump enabled

                                      Apologies if this isn't the correct place to lodge this bug. If not, please redirect me :)

                                      We have a Unity HoloLens app that calls into a native dll which throws an unhandled exception. The application crashes. There are no clues in the Unity logs as you'd expect, as this is native code.

                                      We've enabled Crash Dumps for the app under "App Crash Dumps" in the Windows Device Portal, but whenever the crash happens, nothing appears under Crash Dumps in the same window when refreshed.

                                      This definitely worked in previous Windows versions on the HoloLens. Could it be a bug…
