Universal Windows Platform

Welcome to the Windows Platform Developer (WPDev) Feedback site. This feedback forum provides the WPDev community with a channel for feedback on the following topics:

• Windows developer platform (APIs, runtimes, and controls)
• Dev Center Store (developer portal, back-end services, reporting/analytics and process)
• Windows Stores (Windows and Windows Phone)

Your suggestions will be reviewed by the Windows platform developer team, providing feedback to help with planning ideas and to better understand how developers are using the development platform.

What this forum is not intended to cover or capture:

If you’re new to this whole UserVoice thing, we’d like to note two important things about this site: (a) List items (and item rankings) represent community interest in features, and does not represent an actual priority list for the product team; and (b) Suggestions made using this forum will be moderated if they do not actually represent a feature request.

How can we improve the Windows dev platform?

1. UWP Input Validation

As an enterprise developer we need a richer set of Line of Business features. Input validation is fundamental to business applications and should not require us to roll our own or find a 3rd party solution.

• API Access for Quick Access Area in file explorer

On Pre Windows 10 (tested XP-8.1) i was able to create a link in the favourite section of the file explorer (done with WshShellClass). With the quick access bar in windows 10 it's not working anymore since quick access is something new (like it so far).

Please provide an API for accessing quick access. A Bonus would be to be able to set a link for all users (incl. the user accounts to come).

.Net API preferred, at least Win32 API

We are currently investigating how an API like this would work given a user could remove the item from the Quick Access area inside the file explorer. One thought currently is this would be a user opt-in feature where a user could deny your app from being allowed to even add it.

We would love to hear the scenarios on how your app would use such a feature and some edge cases that would be relevant to you. This will allow us to properly form true developer driven scenarios.

• Simplify Publish to Appx package (Centennial)

Add Publish to Appx for Centennial button in VS. It should be <2 minute wizard with no CMD involvement if you want developers to add their software to the store. As simple as ClickOnce publishing. I do not want to convert MSIs

Thank you for your feedback. We are designing the tools needed to make the transition to appx easier, however it can not be as simple as adding a new button since the user needs to edit the manifest, associate to the store, etc.. If you are interested in providing feedback about this new feature, please contact me @ridomin

• Add CornerRadius to ImageEx

It would be nice to wrap de ImageEx in a control to add a circular aspect to the image

• Allow context menu verbs with file explorer integration without having a file type association

On this page, there is explanation how to make a file explorer integration on a desktop bridge app:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/sv-se/windows/uwp/porting/desktop-to-uwp-extensions

In short you could add something like this in your manifest-file:

<uap3:Extension Category="windows.fileTypeAssociation">
<uap3:FileTypeAssociation Name="MyApp">
<uap:SupportedFileTypes>
<uap:FileType MultiSelectModel="Document">.txt</uap:FileType>
<uap:FileType>.foo</uap:FileType>
</uap:SupportedFileTypes>
<uap2:SupportedVerbs>
<uap3:Verb Id="Edit" Parameters="/e "%1"">Edit</uap3:Verb>
<uap3:Verb Id="Print" Parameters="/p "%1"">Print</uap3:Verb>
</uap2:SupportedVerbs>
<uap:Logo>Assets\MyExtensionLogo.png</uap:Logo>
</uap3:FileTypeAssociation>
</uap3:Extension>

I’m working on porting an app that could calculate MD5 checksums on a file. I want to add this as a context menu option on for instance zip and iso-files. But it’s not possible to do this without making a file type association as I get it :(.…

• Swift support for UWP

The language Swift was created by Apple for use on iOS and macOS. It was made open source in 2015. It has support for Linux and I think Windows should gain support too. Adding this may encourage more developers to port their apps to Windows from iOS and make things more familiar.

• Windows Store policy changed or bug?

Hello,
I don't for how long but I noticed it a few days back that there is a change in de Windows app store seacchresults.
If you type in a keyword or search on "Windows PC apps" you also get mobile only apps in the results. PC apps are harder to find this way.
Also I noticed that in the Mobile store apps are shown twice after search with a keyword. For expample searchword "Tinder".
Is this new policy or is it a bug?
Thanks!
Best Regards,
Eugène Schouten

• [Bug] IMFSourceReader could ignore SetCurrentPosition call if it is reading FLAC

Hi! I use IMFSourceReader on UWP and noticed following bug with FLAC decoding: it will not change position if SetCurrentPosition will be called right after initialization. It is working correct with .mp3 and other codecs, but not with FLAC.

Maybe there is a way to create an API to allow us to make the live tiles really interactive (with buttons and other controls)

Can you please give us more information on exactly how you would use interactive tiles? What specifically do you, as a developer, want to be able to do with an interactive tile?

Please give us specific examples of the interactive tile you’d like to build, so that we can understand exactly what you need!

Thanks!

• Get/Query Active Directory user information

As a developer I need access to the current logged in active directory user to check if the user has a specific role.

Normally I do this with:

WindowsIdentity currentUser = WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent();
var groups = currentUser.Groups;
or
groups.Claims

So I can get the SID or the groups of the user.

Most companies want to control the access of the user by the active directory. The enterprise application uses this information whether a user got access or not.

If there is no api to access this information, enterprise application development with uwp becomes uninteresting. Please help us out!

Platform should support new applications that are not big companies'. In these days all new applications don't appear in New+Rising category, and some new applications are dying. We have communicate with Microsoft Support about this situation and they said "We don't promise "New applications always enter New+Rising category" to developers. It is so embarrassing for small companies or freelance developers. You should support new applications, you should support us.

• Company Apps Enrollment API

Having users enroll their phone using the same mdm client no matter the vendor is a nice idea. However, if an IT tech is using the same mdm vendor across all platforms, the enrollment experience is then totally different. We would like to make the enrollment process consistent for our users.

Can we have an API to enroll the device through an app, or allow mdm enrollment to initiate through a browser download.
