Universal Windows Platform

Welcome to the Windows Platform Developer (WPDev) Feedback site. This feedback forum provides the WPDev community with a channel for feedback on the following topics:

  • Windows developer platform (APIs, runtimes, and controls)
  • Dev Center Store (developer portal, back-end services, reporting/analytics and process)
  • Windows Stores (Windows and Windows Phone)

Your suggestions will be reviewed by the Windows platform developer team, providing feedback to help with planning ideas and to better understand how developers are using the development platform.

What this forum is not intended to cover or capture:

If you’re new to this whole UserVoice thing, we’d like to note two important things about this site: (a) List items (and item rankings) represent community interest in features, and does not represent an actual priority list for the product team; and (b) Suggestions made using this forum will be moderated if they do not actually represent a feature request.

How can we improve the Windows dev platform?

  1. winappdriver: add logging options

    I'd like to see support for having winappdriver log to a local file, as well as support for setting log levels.

    • WinAppDriver: Ability to run application with arguments

      It would be great to have an ability to run application with arguments using WinAppDriver. For example, run installer from MSI package:
      dc.SetCapability("app", @"C:\windows\system32\msiexec.exe");
      dc.SetCapability("args", @"/i C:\installer.msi");

      Currently it is possible to do it using Winium, but not possible to do using WinAppDriver.

        not one by one each time

        • ToUpper property on TextBox

          Please create this option native to TextBox control
          It's very usefull in WinForm projects and could speed up development on universal app too.

          • XAML for live tiles

            Allow developers to implement an interface(s) on a user control and "submit" that instead of just filling in a tile data structure. This will make tiles truly "live" and open up the live of WP7 to new applications. This is also completely secure because the runtime can analyze the class (and it's IL) being submitted. A bevy of restrictions can also be heaped on the said user control in order to maintain performance and not sap battery life. Let Live tiles be live, please.

              It’s great to see that XAML for Live Tiles is so highly requested!

              In Windows 10, we created Adaptive Tile Notifications, which partially addresses this issue. Adaptive is a lightweight XML way to define your tile notification’s appearance. It isn’t as powerful as XAML, and it isn’t animated, but it’s a step in the right direction. The MSN Weather app uses Adaptive to create their rich and beautiful live tile.

              Learn more about Adaptive here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tiles_and_toasts/archive/2015/06/30/adaptive-tile-templates-schema-and-documentation.aspx

              In the future, we’ll definitely look at how we can make Live Tiles even better, potentially by supporting XAML. There are performance and other implementation issues, but we definitely understand the need for it.

              Thanks!

            • Show a paid app w/ a "trial" option in the "free apps" category

              When I create a paid app with a trial option, many users blow right by it because it doesn't show up in the "free" category even though a light version of the app is free (via the trial).

              Some people are resorting to the super-inefficient Apple app store method of releasing 2 versions of the app... one that shows up in the "free" category and another that runs as a paid app. The "trial" is a fantastic concept, but it is hobbled by this oversight

                  • Nullable dependency properties

                    Should be clear, nullable properties in XAML should be supported and not give the error "Cannot assign to nullable type on property".
                    This is really way too long in UWP Xaml not addressed.

                    public static readonly DependencyProperty IsTestProperty = DependencyProperty.Register(nameof(IsTest),typeof(bool?),typeof(ControlY, null);

                    public bool? IsTest
                    {
                    get { return (bool?)GetValue(IsTestProperty); }
                    set { SetValue(IsTestProperty, value); }
                    }

                    <uc:ControlY IsTest="true" />

                    • [Bug] AudioGraph: Gaps and clicks during playback

                      To reproduce you may start with official AudioCreation sample from https://github.com/Microsoft/Windows-universal-samples/tree/master/Samples/AudioCreation/cs/AudioCreation
                      Use file playback sample or custom effects sample. Depending on hardware, you may hear gaps right after start or you may need load CPU with some additional work, like scrolling UI or running some work in background threads.
                      I guess it is result of extremely short quantum size (10ms; even switching between threads could take more time) and too low buffer length (2 quants), but it could be just some synchronization issue.

                        • Add an option to 'Create dump file' of running process

                          Currently there is no way to attach debugger to already running process via 'Attach to process' on mobile. And sometimes bad bugs, like deadlocks, happens. And its real pain to investigate them, since usually they happen without debugger and on release builds. Windows 10 Mobile is like back box you can't get full access to.

                          In addition to existing functionality which allows to collect dump when app crashes, it would be nice to have an option to collect dump of running process on Windows 10 Mobile any time you want via device portal.

                          Thanks.

                            Great idea, makes sense. We’re looking at enabling live dump collection of processes that belong to sideloaded apps, so that you can collect information about app state if it hangs. If that’s insufficient, please let us know. Thanks for your input!

                          • Make it harder to decompile sources from appx packages

                            Windows Phone Silvelight XAPs were signed, so anyone donwloading them through the Store (manual download) could not have easy access to the sources of the app.

                            Now with Universal apps / WinRT (.appx), our binaries are not longer signed as a whole, any script kiddie can unzip and decompile any app.

                            That's a huge problem regarding developer investing on the platform.

                            • x:Bind To ImageSource Support Support System.Uri

                              When using the old style binding ({Binding}) of an Image.Source property to a view model property, the vm property can be either a string or a Uri (in additon to an actual image source), implicit conversion is done.
                              When using {x:Bind} it appears only strings are supported for implicit conversion. Trying to bind to a Uri will either throw an exception or give a compiler error (I can't remember which) and certainly won't display an image.

                              Code analysis will often warn if you expose a properlty as a uri using a string type (can be ignored, but CA is giving…

                                We understand this feedback. With the Anniversary Edition SDK, we enable ‘function bindings’ which can help to ease some of this that you can essentially call your own conversion methods in the binding like {x:Bind ConvertToUri(’’)} and write whatever code you want in the conversion function. We will continue to look at best areas for implicit converters though.

                              • TextBox Property to Show/Hide Delete Button

                                Depending on the app, we do not always want to show the built-in delete buttons for a TextBox (the X on the right edge of the TextBox). I have, in multiple scenarios, had to create a ControlTemplate to avoid displaying the Delete Button. I think there should be a property (maybe something like ShowDeleteButton) that allows you to specify whether the Delete button is displayed. This property would have values Show, Hide, and Auto (or maybe a nullable Boolean).

                                • Enable WinAppDriver for Xbox and Mobile

                                  Right now WinAppDriver only works on desktop.

                                  Getting these capabilities across the Windows ecosystem would fulfill the promise of a unified Windows. Making it possible for us to write tests, and code once and have it being tested in an autonomous way. So that in theory, our applications could report and find bugs for us.

                                  Before our users find them.

                                  Thanks in advance. Looking forward to the progress you're doing :D

                                  • Using x:Bind or Binding in a Setter Value property of a VisualState

                                    Using x:Bind or Binding in a Setter Value property of a VisualState will not be executed at the start of the view, you have to change the state of the and then go back before the bindings are used resulting in initial views being broken.

                                    For code sample see: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/43880567/uwp-bindings-in-visualstate-setters

                                    • UI Access support for Centennial Converter

                                      We have a uwp in the store and a desktop companion app. Currently to install our software (and have it function) both programs are needed. Merging them into a single installer would benefit our users greatly. It seems in order to do that we need to either pull out of the store or convert our desktop app to a uwp and merge the two installers. The issue we run into is that our desktop app uses ui access. Is ui access support on the list of upcoming features? Having a good informed answer to this question will help tremendously in helping us understand how…

                                        Please provide an API that provides access to the texts to allow developers to implement an application to enable scenarios such as reading or archiving SMS messages.

                                          Currently, the platform provides a number of SMS Access from a system eventing perspective (as of Windows Phone 8.1), and Windows Phone supports sms backup/restore for consumers as part of the base OS (Settings → Backup). What we don’t provide is a backup API.

                                          Using SMS events: Check out the Build 2014 session (http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2014/2-518) or MSDN docs on background tasks (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsphone/develop/hh977056.aspx)

                                          Although the capabilities are there from a consumer perspective (the core ask for the suggestion), I’m marking this as ‘Under Review’ for the API perspective. The team is aware of the ask and it is something that is being considered.

                                          Allow us to define InputScope for <input> elements with type='text'. Specifically, I would like to set it to Numbers.
