Universal Windows Platform

Welcome to the Universal Windows Platform Developer Feedback site. This site provides the Windows developer community with a channel for feedback on the following topics:

  • Windows developer platform (APIs, runtimes, and controls)
  • Dev Center (dashboard, reporting/analytics, submission process, etc.)
  • Microsoft Store

Your suggestions will be reviewed by the Windows platform developer team to help with planning ideas and to better understand how developers are using the platform.

What this forum is not intended to cover or capture:

  • Windows consumer suggestions: Use the Windows Feedback Hub app built directly into Windows 10
  • Documentation on docs.microsoft.com: Sign in at the bottom of the page to give documentation feedback via Github
  • Visual Studio / .NET: Use the Visual Studio UserVoice site

If you’re new to UserVoice, two things to keep in mind are (a) List items (and item rankings) represent community interest in features, and not the actual priority list for the product team; and (b) Suggestions made using this forum will be moderated if they do not actually represent a feature request (or if too many different ideas are included in one suggestion).

  1. Allow audio from background task without requiring foreground activation

    I would like to have the ability to play audio from background task without requiring the app to be in foreground first.

    Both android and iOS have this feature. This is a road block for alarm clock apps that require custom audio uploaded by the user to be played.

    Details here.

  3. Disable H.264 Hardware Acceleration for UWP apps

    Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder that decodes H.264 video has AVDecVideoAcceleration_H264 property that allows to disable Hardware Acceleration (HWA): https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/directshow/microsoft-mpeg-2-video-decoder
    HWA drivers are dysfunctional frequently enough (green/black screen instead of video) that all major video playing apps: Windows Media Player, VLC, Internet Explorer/Edge, Firefox, Chrome have an option to disable HWA:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2528233/how-to-enable-or-disable-software-rendering-in-internet-explorer
    https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1230977
    Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 10 x64 exposes this option via registry:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Scrunch\CodecPack\MSDVD]
    "DXVA"=dword:00000000
    "DXVA2"=dword:00000000
    "DisableDVDDXVA"=dword:00000001
    Can you add a property to MediaPlayerElement (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uwp/design/controls-and-patterns/media-playback) and/or a registry key that would expose an option to disable HWA for UWP apps when it does not work (green/black…

  4. MediaSource.CreateFromWindowsMedia( WindowsMediaKind soundKind)

    With the omission of SystemSounds from UWP, it seems that if one would like to play a system sound such as Windows Error (a very common need) then one must include a copy of the sound file in the app for use in MediaPlayer. This is because there are not sufficient access permissions to the C:/Windows/Media directory to load the file from there (unless one uses the overly broad permission to access all user-accessible files).

    This situation is not appropriate since presumably the sounds could changed or even deleted in future releases of windows.

    There should be a method added…

  5. Wrong Buffer Size in IBasicAudioEffect.ProcessFrame if you use PCM/Float with AAC codec

    If you specify PCM codec in SupportedEncodingProperties and play an AAC encoded file, IBasicAudioEffect.ProcessFrame will give you an array wich has a capacity of 1 sec of audio samples but only contains ca 20ms of audio samples.

  7. Add ability to pause animated GIF mid way through

    It would be nice to be able to pause an animated GIF at the currently visible point in its animation sequence. Currently it is only possible to stop it, which resets it to the beginning. This is using the BitmapImage class to display the GIF.

  8. Enable HDR output mode for MediaPlayerElement for Third-party App

    Fact 1:
    Current only Microsoft Movie & TV app have this capability, when User play HDR video the TV will indicate it's output HDR color format

    Fact 2:
    Microsoft Media Player don't support HDR

    Fact 3:
    so as my Video Player App. even though Hardware decoding HEVC HDR Video Sample will not HDR output , color seems over exposure, beacause not enough Color space availabale.

    Please expose this Feature for Developer, even just as a restricted capability will be sufficent.

  9. Add Directx Sound 3D API

    Add Directx Sound 3D API. This was the best feature ever and allows the Developer to create deeper Worlds and more realistic with hardware Accelerated. The Next Xbox after Xbox X should use a X-Fi CHip with EAX 5 or higer. That would make Windows and Xbox more uniqe.

  10. Add ASIO support

    Steinberg distributes ASIO as COM component. UWP apps can access only whitelisted COM and Win32 APIs. Please, either add ASIO to the list of trusted APIs, or add some wrapper for that COM in UWP.

  11. audio troubleshooting

    Have a serious Win10/Realtek ALC887 codec, unsolvable problem with HD audio, recording is a hamster and playback hidden below white noise. Audio troubleshooter tells me all is fine. Device manager says working but events shows it couldn't migrate. Have tried every route including the Mother Board bios. Have edited regedit entries, deleted everything audio and you name it someone has suggested it. It can only be a driver conflict, this is a common problem I am told by MSDN folk, yet troubleshooter cant handle it. Needs some attention.

  12. dvd and Blu Ray Playback support

    There is a very high demand from the users of media applications on Windows 10 to have support of DVD and BLU-RAY playback in the media apps, and currently there is no API which can be used to support that in a uwp app. As a developer I would really appreciate if such an API feature is created for uwp SDK.

  14. UWP C# - Set Subtype "MPEG2TS" to ContainerEncodingProperties throws exception

    ContainerEncodingProperties seems to support "MPEG2TS" video container:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/uwp/api/windows.media.mediaproperties.containerencodingproperties.subtype#Windows_Media_MediaProperties_ContainerEncodingProperties_Subtype

    Windows 10 and UWP Apps seems to support H.264 encoding with "MPEG2TS" container:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/uwp/audio-video-camera/supported-codecs

    Why I can't set the Subtype property to "MPEG2TS" in the ContainerEncodingProperties object?

    Target is to live stream the webcam (video and audio) from Raspberry Pi in Windows IoT Core UWP app to a browser use MPEG2TS encoding (MPEG-DASH).

    See my stackoverflow question:
    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/47229957/uwp-c-sharp-http-webcam-live-streaming-server-useing-mpeg-dash

    Code:
    var mediaCapture = new MediaCapture();
    await mediaCapture.InitializeAsync();

    var mediaEncodingProfile = MediaEncodingProfile.CreateMp4(VideoEncodingQuality.HD1080p);

    var containerEncodingProperties = new ContainerEncodingProperties();
    containerEncodingProperties.Subtype = "MPEG2TS";
    //Throws System.ArgumentException: 'Value does not fall within the expected range.'

    mediaEncodingProfile.Container = containerEncodingProperties;

    var…

    Good catch. Looks like we have a doc bug and implementation bug.

    Docs says that “MPEG2TS” and “MPEG2PS” are valid values. But the implementation currently only recognizes “MPEG2”, which creates a MPEG-2 Program Stream container. To create a MPEG-2 Transport Stream container, one would have to specify the GUID for that container instead of using the friendly name.
    The GUID for MPEG-2 Transport Stream is {e06d8023-db46-11cf-b4d1-00805f6cbbea}

  15. Direct2D color mamagement effect with any rendering intent other than perceptual uses a lot of memory at small scales

    I'm trying to develop a high quality image processing pipeline (for both image display and image conversion) using Direct2D (actually a combination of Win2D, Win2D/Direct2D interop and WIC). This is quite powerful by using effects and CreateImageSourceFromWic which can then handle arbitrary image sizes. However, there are a number of issues. One is that creating a color management effect with any rendering intent other than perceptual and rendering at a scale of about 0.07 or less starts to produce large spikes in memory usage (at least for large images e.g. 5.5k*3.5k). It is especially bad when using HighQualityCubic interpolation, and…

  16. AudioFrameInputNode with N channels > 2

    In order to make things more efficient when mixing a lot of synthesized notes, I'd like us to consider having a AudioInputNode that supports N channels, where N could be 8 or more.

    This significantly improves performance when one is attempting to mix multiple synthesized sounds (content that is made on the fly in the AudioFrameInputNode.QuantumStarted event).

    Thanks

  17. mediaplayerelement seekbar hover thumbnail

    This feature is almost available in any web based video player or any Desktop based video player, the feature is simple. When a mediaplayerelement is playing or paused a video. and the user hover overs the seekbar, with mouse, or pen or any other input device for that perspective, wherver is the user mouse, show a small thumbnail of the video file at that specific position, just above the seekbar ( slider ) and as the user moves the mouse along the seekbar, the thumbnail should update accordingly.

  18. Virtual MIDI ports

    I'd like to see an API to create virtual MIDI ports built into Windows. The Surface touch screen has tons of possibilities as a MIDI controller, but this currently requires installing a 3rd party driver, which is not a great end user experience. Built in RtpMIDI would be nice too, but at least this would be achievable without a kernel mode driver if we had virtual MIDI ports.

  19. MIDI file (.mid) playback support in Groove Music App

    Windows Media Player can play .mid files for a very long time but Groove Music App cannot because WinRT does not have API to play MIDI file.

  20. TimedTextSource.Parsed event or similar

    It would nice to have something like Parsed event in TimedTextSource,
    that allows to configure cues StartTime and Duration properties.
    In Resolved event it is ignored and texts are rendering in old start time.
