Universal Windows Platform

Welcome to the Universal Windows Platform Developer Feedback site. This site provides the Windows developer community with a channel for feedback on the following topics:

  • Windows developer platform (APIs, runtimes, and controls)
  • Dev Center (dashboard, reporting/analytics, submission process, etc.)
  • Microsoft Store

Your suggestions will be reviewed by the Windows platform developer team to help with planning ideas and to better understand how developers are using the platform.

What this forum is not intended to cover or capture:

  • Windows consumer suggestions: Use the Windows Feedback Hub app built directly into Windows 10
  • Documentation on docs.microsoft.com: Sign in at the bottom of the page to give documentation feedback via Github
  • Visual Studio / .NET: Use the Visual Studio UserVoice site

If you’re new to UserVoice, two things to keep in mind are (a) List items (and item rankings) represent community interest in features, and not the actual priority list for the product team; and (b) Suggestions made using this forum will be moderated if they do not actually represent a feature request (or if too many different ideas are included in one suggestion).

How can we improve the Windows dev platform?

  1. Honor the extendedExecutionSession flag in windows.gaming.input.gamepad.vibration

UWP desktop app targeting Windows 17763, requesting and being granted an extendedExecutionSession can target the vibration motors through a windows.gaming.input.gamepad's Vibration interface but once the app gets minimized applying the Vibration property silently fails.
Please honor the extendedExecutionSession context, thanks.

  2. Allow Bitlocker PIN to be set by standard users

Currently Bitlocker PIN has to be set by administrative users. When leveraging autopilot, that limits you either leverage silent deployment with TPM protector or non-silent policy but that means admin users have to configure Bitlocker on the device. It would be great if a standard user can be prompted to enable Bitlocker and set a PIN

  3. Stabilize Virtual Desktop API

Currently there's a set of COM APIs, that provide access to Virtual Desktop-related features, like pinning apps to desktops, switching desktops, etc. Unfortunately, most of it is undocumented, and does not seem to be stabilized (2018 Spring Update for instance changed IApplicationView's CLSID, so apps using it stopped working).

per before, can you make a clear scenario based request?

“I want to do XYZ, currently the api set only allows ABC, if we had apis to do M, N, and P, we feel we could accomplish XYZ.”

  4. Desible scaling the UWP app programatically

I would like to prevent that the content of my UWP app after changing the default Windows scaling being scaled. Windows scaling should no longer affect UWP app scaling. I know, this feature does not exist for UWP Desktop, it exist just for Xbox: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/uwp/api/windows.ui.viewmanagement.applicationviewscaling. It would also be very helpful for UWP desktop applications.

  6. Bring the app to foreground on drop event

If I drop a file in a C# UWP app onto a window that is partially covered by other apps, the app should be brought to the foreground. Because there is no acceptable possibility to bring the app to foreground by itself. It wouldn't be a good user experience if the app starts working or displays a user dialog in the drop handler, but the user can't see anything.

Instead to leave the app always in background or to bring the app always to foreground on drop, DragEventArgs could get a new member SetWindowToForeground (e.g.) which can be set/executed in…

  7. Run desktop apps from inside UWP

I know the point is to make it safe, but this is really bad idea to prevent running any other apps from UWP.
We need to build GUI based on python project. For some reason they want to use only UWP but it's impossible with the restrictions you've made!
It's a shame that running a desktop app is banned globally and u should let the programmer / user to decide if they allow run desktop app from UWP or not.
For me, this restriction means I'll never prefer to use UWP unless it's a must.

  8. have app featured in the Microsoft Store

For small developers getting downloads for their apps even really good ones are hard, is there a way to get them featured on the home page of the Microsoft Store?

  10. Extend maximum size for CompactOverlay view mode.

The ApplicationViewMode CompactOverlay (also known as "Picture-in-Picture", "Mini-Mode" or "Always-on-top") for UWP apps has a maximum window size, which seems to be a square with sides of approximately half screen height.

I got several user feedback if I could provide a larger compact overlay.
Unfortunately I can not, since this is limited through Windows.

Is there a good reason for this somehow arbitrary limit? (Other than "our product manager said 500 pixels are a good maximum width and height for something called compact"😋)
Could you please increase the maximum size or better: remove it at all! Seems my users would…

  11. identify what version of office the users are using with Microsoft Office Add-in

We have an add-in to Microsoft Office and we can see the OS version of our customers that are installing but we cannot see the version of Office, ie. 2010, 2013, 2016, etc. It would be helpful to see the Office version as well.

  12. We should be able to create windows on multiple monitors, and move them easily (programmatically)

I want to create an application to display informations on a 16 monitors computer. The app should be able to create windows on each of these monitors, and be able to rearrange them.
It seems that I can't do that with UWP.

  13. Window Startup Position/Location

Currently there does not appear to be a way to set a window's startup position (left, top, width/right, height/bottom), beyond full-screen and/or maximized. Also, the last used position for a given window isn't saved intrinsically. Windows launch at random places on the desktop. I understand this need does not really exist for mobile. But for many desktop applications, specifically container applications, managing windows is a core feature objective.

  14. Add WMI support for UWP

Please add WMI support on UWP. I'm aware of the sandboxing. But if I'm designing an app just for a desktop, I should be able to get remote device info, remote registry read-write, copy-write files, etc remotely.

Basically I should be able to admin a remote desktop.

  15. Determine whether the user opend the app with double click file or context menu open with

I need a way to determine whether the user opend the uwp app with a double click on the file or whether the user used "open with" (for example right click on the file open with; or Photos app -> open with).

In both scenarios the app will be launched with FileActivetedEventArgs with the verb "open".

    See: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/51171176/determine-whether-the-user-opend-the-app-with-double-click-file-or-context-menu/51182980#51182980

  16. Two Copy and Paste Functions

My idea is simply to double the clipboard capabilities to improve user efficiency.

The 4 options should be made available on the context menu when highlighting a text or item.

    For example;
    Copy 1 [Item A]
    Copy 2 [Item B]
    Paste 1 [Item A]
    Paste 2 [Item B]

The commands could be changed to colours, rather than numerical values. E.g. Copy <blue> Paste <blue>
    Copy <Green> Paste <Green>

  18. Update and shut down

When you choose "Update and shut down" option when an update is available, let it complete everything before shutting down, therefore when I turn on the PC next time everything is already completed and there's nothing else to finish.

I always choose that option at night when I shut down the PC and in the morning I always still have something else unfinished to be updated.

  20. AppX uninstall doesn't cleanup application frame data

I hear a lot about “clean uninstall” but we noticed a few months ago appx leaves some stuff behind. Specifically, persisted appframe window sizing data remains behind, potentially leaving the user/dev in a potential bad or confusing window state.

See the data piling up in the following stores:
    • HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ApplicationFrame\WindowSizing
    • HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ApplicationFrame\Positions
    • HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ApplicationFrame\TitleBar
