Universal Windows Platform

Welcome to the Universal Windows Platform Developer Feedback site. This site provides the Windows developer community with a channel for feedback on the following topics:

  • Windows developer platform (APIs, runtimes, and controls)
  • Dev Center (dashboard, reporting/analytics, submission process, etc.)
  • Microsoft Store

Your suggestions will be reviewed by the Windows platform developer team to help with planning ideas and to better understand how developers are using the platform.

What this forum is not intended to cover or capture:

  • Windows consumer suggestions: Use the Windows Feedback Hub app built directly into Windows 10
  • Documentation on docs.microsoft.com: Sign in at the bottom of the page to give documentation feedback via Github
  • Visual Studio / .NET: Use the Visual Studio UserVoice site

If you’re new to UserVoice, two things to keep in mind are (a) List items (and item rankings) represent community interest in features, and not the actual priority list for the product team; and (b) Suggestions made using this forum will be moderated if they do not actually represent a feature request (or if too many different ideas are included in one suggestion).

How can we improve the Windows dev platform?

  3. lock the tiles

provide a lock to the tiles so that the tiles won't get collapsed accidentally.

  4. Adaptive Tiles: optional elements and priority

Currently when the last element(s) of the tile doesn't fit (because of users with unusual scaling settings for example) it get's "discarded" out of view which is understandable.
But it would be nice to choose what elements get discarded first in case there's isn't enough space on the tile.
It also helps with dealing with the scenario where because of the users scaling settings there is too much space on the tile where the developer could have shown extra info.

  5. Add API for developers to make true Live Tile Clocks

I have an app in the store to make a live tile clock. It worked fairly well on WP8.1, but now on W10M, when you go to the start screen, until the tile notification refreshes, the live tile shows the default app tile. I checked with multiple clock tile apps in the store and they all have this same fundamental issue. (blank or app logo on tile until tile notification refreshes). What would be nice is, instead of sending tile notifications for every minute, if there was a way to better adjust the live tile image every minute. Something like…

Hey William! Andrew from the Windows Notifications team here.

One thing you can try doing is not setting an expiration time on your tile notifications. Sounds like you’re setting an expiration time, hence why the tile is reverting back to blank. If you don’t set an expiration time, it’ll briefly display the previous time and then flip to the current time – which might be a better experience.

But maybe if tile notifications could be marked as “Display instantly”, clock and calendar tiles would be able to function better.

I believe we delay displaying the notifications for performance reasons (we don’t render them till you open Start), but we also have a little delay in there to “cascade” the displaying of notifications, so everything doesn’t flip all at once. But by cutting out the second step with the “Display instantly” flag, it could maybe work.

    Anyways, thanks for the feedback!…

  6. Adaptive Tiles: Allow groups/subgroups that don't fit cycle through being displayed rather than just being dropped

Currently it is possible to specify multiple groups/subgroups within the various tile sizes for adaptive tiles, but if the content doesn't fit then some groups won't necessarily ever be shown (they are dropped since the tile can't fit the groups).

It would be nice if for adaptive tiles with multiple groups, where the current size can't fit all the groups, those groups would automatically cycle around (similar to MSN news live tile or calendar app, but in this case an individual notification would be cycling, rather than a queue of separate notifications)

  7. Interactive live tiles

Maybe there is a way to create an API to allow us to make the live tiles really interactive (with buttons and other controls)

Can you please give us more information on exactly how you would use interactive tiles? What specifically do you, as a developer, want to be able to do with an interactive tile?

Please give us specific examples of the interactive tile you’d like to build, so that we can understand exactly what you need!

    Thanks!

  8. Schedule Badge Updates

I have a set of TimeSheet/Timer apps that use the badge notification to show the number of hours that have passed. It is great that we can Schedule Tile updates so that I can always show the latest timings on the tile itself but I would love it if I could do the same thing with Badges. If I can schedule in advance that the Badge will be 1, one hour after execution, 2 at two hours after and so on, I wouldn't need a background task every half hour to check if the badge needs setting. It should follow…

  9. Video in Live Tiles

The ability to have video on Live Tiles.

    For instance instagram, vimeo videos.
Goals of the week, of the favourites teams. Best plays.

That would rock live tiles capabilities to extreme...

  10. make it possible to declare an OnClick event for live tiles

Make it possible to optionally declare a function OnClick() for live tiles, such that this code is executed when the live tiles is presed without leaving the home screen. Think about WiFi toggles, music controls, unmute/ mute etc.

  11. XAML for live tiles

Allow developers to implement an interface(s) on a user control and "submit" that instead of just filling in a tile data structure. This will make tiles truly "live" and open up the live of WP7 to new applications. This is also completely secure because the runtime can analyze the class (and it's IL) being submitted. A bevy of restrictions can also be heaped on the said user control in order to maintain performance and not sap battery life. Let Live tiles be live, please.

It’s great to see that XAML for Live Tiles is so highly requested!

In Windows 10, we created Adaptive Tile Notifications, which partially addresses this issue. Adaptive is a lightweight XML way to define your tile notification’s appearance. It isn’t as powerful as XAML, and it isn’t animated, but it’s a step in the right direction. The MSN Weather app uses Adaptive to create their rich and beautiful live tile.

Learn more about Adaptive here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tiles_and_toasts/archive/2015/06/30/adaptive-tile-templates-schema-and-documentation.aspx

In the future, we’ll definitely look at how we can make Live Tiles even better, potentially by supporting XAML. There are performance and other implementation issues, but we definitely understand the need for it.

    Thanks!

  12. Add an API to check if tiles are supported

For jumplist there is JumpList.IsSupported() to check if jumplists is supported. I would appreciate something similar for tiles as well. I know that IoT doesn’t support tiles at all. And some platforms maybe don’t support secondary tiles. I guess notifications has the same limitation (I haven’t check thought).

I work around this by checking device family. Easy, but that just doesn’t feel right :)

  13. Check if tile template is supported

I’m missing an API for UWP applications to check if tile template is supported for the device that the application is running. For instance, when writing this “TileLarge” is supported on desktop but not on the phone.

We suggest sending all tile template sizes, so that your tile notification will work on any device that supports TileLarge. However, if you need to specifically check that it’s not supported, you can query AnalyticsInfo.VersionInfo.DeviceFamily and check whether it’s “Windows.Desktop” or “Windows.Mobile”.

If there are more requests for this feature, we could consider adding API’s to query available templates.

    Thanks!

  14. Live tile animations or live tile from xaml

Live tiles are great. Would prefer some way to great animated live tiles like the Xbox games or music apps.

Also good if we have a convenient way to create live tiles from xaml. Currently need to generate a bitmap image which not works well for list, etc…

Thanks for the suggestion! XAML on Live Tiles is something that we will look at in the future. Your requests and votes help us plan accordingly!

    Thanks!

  15. Instant force-update Live Tile option for users

I suggest having an option like (UnPin) on any live tile to (Update) it. With feature user can run background service to update live tile when he need which can help developers to give instant feedback on live tile when user request.

  16. Vector Tiles, App List icons, and App Bar icons

It would be nice to see Windows Phone move to optional vector based icons instead of static bitmaps.

This would allow the application bar (or appbar) to resize if say HD screens were added.

Ideally, users would only need 2 icons for the marketplace: 'Tile' (contains the application name), and 'List' (just the icon for the app list). Appbars could be created at 48x48 and resized as needed.

I know this is a pain on developers that are not designers or have designers, but an option would be nice time saver for the future. Currently I know of developers creating…

Thanks for this suggestion! We totally understand that there’s a ton of icons at various sizes that you have to create when building a new app. In the future, we will look at how we can improve this experience (vector images would likely be the solution).

In the meantime, here’s two great resources that help generate all the various scale factor images…

    - Photoshop actions (for full control): http://blogs.msdn.com/b/madenwal/archive/2015/11/24/photoshop-templates-amp-actions-for-generating-image-assets-for-windows-10-uwp-applications.aspx - Visual Studio extension (fastest option): https://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/09611e90-f3e8-44b7-9c83-18dba8275bb2?SRC=VSIDE

  17. Ability to update a secondary tile by tapping on it, which executes a background task

Continuing my prior post about allowing us to explicitly flip secondary live tiles with a tap instead of launching the app, this request would allow such an action to explicitly update the tile by triggering a function call in a background task.

For instance, normally a stock price tile updates every 30 minutes via a background task, but if you tap it, the quote updates instantly.

Or perhaps you have a tile that shows you where you are--restarurant or wherever--and you simply tap it to check in there. No need to open the app.

    Since it's user-initiated, it wouldn't drain…
