Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

  2. Create an updated CSS Regions capability

Modern web layout and design is getting closer to print media. Using the spirt of CSS Regions, be able to set up the capability of flowing into empty grid track cells and utilize generation of grid tracks.

  5. Please be careful with making Edge Chromium-based

I've recently read articles about the engine of Edge is being replaced by Chromium.

I don't think this is a good idea. Microsoft Edge manages to do what no browser can do. It plays online HTML5 videos with the speed and low-resource need comparable to a native video player (like VLC or Media Player Classic).

This is YouTube playback in Chrome and Edge compared, on the same hardware.

Chrome and Chromium are famous about having a very catastrophic, bloated multimedia backend, especially when it comes to video playback. GPU acceleration is hardly compatible with any video hardware. Also it…

  6. Microsoft Edge - Opening office documents from SharePoint Online in the Desktop Applications

We use Windows 10 and Edge Browser 44.17763.1.0
in SharePoint Online on Classic Sites we have Document Libraries with the setting in Library Settings > Advanced settings> Open in Desktop Application
When opening the library in Edge and clicking on New > Word Document

Result: New File gets opened in the Browser.
Existing Files open in Rich Client.
Expected Result: New File Should be opened in Word 2016 Application.

    Further Testing:
This behavior has been observed against SharePoint 2016 Sites.

We tested on Modern Sites and here we noticed an not consistent behaviour: We had the files opened directly in…

  8. Add more highlight colors in microsoft edge to highlight PDFs and epubs

Microsoft edge is a great tool to read PDFs and eupbs, but when it comes to highlight words you only have 4 choices, It would be great to have more

  9. Add Support for S/MIME in Microsoft Edge

Idea: Add support for S/MIME in Microsoft Edge browser. Since Microsoft Edge is the successor to IE in some regards I'm confused as to why they didn't add support for S/MIME. I, like many other government or business employees rely on this for viewing/sending encrypted mail.

I do love the edge browser because it works so much better Outlook Web Access but not having the ability to install S/MIME really takes away from the experience.

Has there been any discussion thus far as to why this hasn't been implemented?

  11. Publish edge_embedded_browser/client/win/webview2.idl

Please publish the file edge_embedded_browser/client/win/webview2.idl or a corresponding type library.
I intend to use the WebView2 control from another language that C++. For this I can use an idl file or a type library, but not a C++ header file.

  13. Open Local File with anchor

We need to open a local html file with the default handler (in this case, it's edge).

Unfortunatelly, edge is cutting all the query parameters and the anchor away.

The following commands work for all the other browsers (including IE, Chrome and Firefox)

    "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" file:///C:/temp/test.html?echo=hello
    --> Resulting to file:///C:/temp/test.html?echo=hello

The edge interprets the command the following way:

    "C:\WINDOWS\system32\LaunchWinApp.exe" "file:///C:/temp/test.html?echo=hello"
    --> Resulting to file:///C:/Temp/test.html

We need a workaround or a fix for this problem, otherwise we can't use the edge browser.

  14. Support Encrypted SNI (ESNI)

We need ESNI as governments are reinforcing their eavesdropping technology to use SNI field.

  17. Aggressively promote the replacement of HTTP with HTTPS

The video linked below makes it very clear on why HTTPS should always be used instead of HTTP.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BNIkw4Ao9w

Currently, all that happens in Microsoft Edge when you connect to a web page through HTTP is that a "🛈" icon appears in the address bar. Since the web page still works, there is little pressure on web developers to drop support of HTTP in favour of using HTTPS. In essence, by treating HTTP almost identically to HTTPS in Microsoft Edge, Microsoft is not doing its part in promoting a safer, more secure, privacy-respecting Internet.

    Microsoft should be a leader—more aggressive…

  18. Fully implement the FormData API

Currently the FormData API is only partially implemented in Edge. Most of the more useful methods are missing including: has(), get(), set(), delete(), entries(), and many others.

FormData is already fully implemented on the other major browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Safari) - see: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/platform/catalog/?q=formdata

  19. Firefox instead of Chromium

Use the Firefox engine instead of the Chromium engine for use in Edge. Firefox is more secure, more private, and uses less resources.

  20. SVG Icons

The extensions design guidance lists 20 possible icon sizes (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/extensions/guides/design). When rendering a simple icon I can easily have 5x growth in payload focused on images than the actual code itself. It would be better to ship an SVG and work with downstream systems to consume that as a more efficient mechanism.
