Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. File API support for extensions

One great addition to Edge extensions would be the ability to write files .

There are of course security issues related to reading or writing files to the file system, but at some point, Edge will support the Downloads API (6 out of the 20 most popular Firefox extensions rely on this API). This API (chrome.downloads) allows to write a file to the Downloads folder out of an external URL. Why not then allow an extension to generate files limited to that folder ?

That would allow saving videos (some streaming protocols need processing so the Downloads API is not…

    • Downloads API support for extensions

Missing Downloads API support is not good. I wanted to port my extension but it relies on basic downloads API missing in Edge.

        • Support "wheel" events for 2-finger scrolling on Precision Touch Pads (like every other browser does, and every other trackpad does)

Microsoft Edge is the only browser that doesn't support 2-finger scrolling properly. Sure, it scrolls the web page, but it doesn't fire wheel events. It instead just lets the OS handle it. This breaks critical functionality not only on the web, but also in many Windows 10 apps that are built using js/html (which is executed by the Edge engine). The biggest example is Flipboard, which doesn't let you "flip" through pages using the scroll gesture on the precision trackpad that Microsoft's own Hardware ships with (every Surface Pro / Book for the past 3+ years).

          To verify the problem,…

                • Implement DOM4 methods: prepend(), append(), before(), after() and replaceWith()

                  Steps to reproduce the problem:
                  1. Open the testcase http://jsbin.com/fiqacod/edit?html,js,output in Edge.

                  What is the expected behavior?
                  The test should pass.

                  What went wrong?
The test failed, indicating that Edge does not support the relevant DOM4 methods.

                  • Native messaging!

Please implement Native messaging mechanism! Internet Banking users are used to sign their contracts via a smart card (which uses WinCrypt API). Nowadays, after deprecation of applets, there is no other way to access Windows API and use a smart card in order to make a trusted digital signature.

                      • Allow developers to freely publish extension in Microsoft Store

For now very limited number of developers allowed to publish own extension in Microsoft Store and make own work available to users. Also there is no any way of how everyone else can be notified that extensions publishing to Microsoft Store is already possible. At least I hope that this issue can serve for this purpose, for everyone who vote for it.

                          • Add a way for the website to determine if the user has dark mode enabled

Now that we have dark mode in the OS and in the browser, it's time for the websites to join!
Add window.msDarkModeEnabled or something similar for developers to determine if the user has dark mode enabled and act accordingly.

                            • Calling/consuming an App Service from Edge extension

An edge extension should be able to communicate to a locally installed UWP app. I know UWP apps can't use loopback tcp communication. So the most viable option is to run AppService from UWP app and let the edge extension consume that service. Currently, Edge extensions can't access Windows.ApplicationModel.AppService namespace.

                              • Iterable NodeLists

Edge is now the only browser without support for iterable nodelists. (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, & Safari TP all have it). By iterable nodelists I mean defining `NodeList.prototype[Symbol.iterator]` so that you can spread nodelists like `[...document.body.children]`.

This boils down to implementing something like:
                                NodeList.prototype[Symbol.iterator] = Array.prototype[Symbol.iterator];

                                  Scoped Styles via @scope

@scope at-rule to apply a block of rules only within a subtree of the document. The cascade would prioritize scoped rules above unscoped ones, regardless of specificity.

                                  https://drafts.csswg.org/css-scoping/

(This is similar to scoped styles in this post: https://wpdev.uservoice.com/forums/257854-microsoft-edge-developer/suggestions/6508310-scoped-styles -- but the newer revision of the draft uses an at-rule rather than the HTML `scoped` attribute)

                                    • about:tabs

add buttons to the about:tabs page to launch windows 10 default apps and office apps. see https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uwp/launch-resume/launch-default-app
                                      or
add a about:apps page that only includes buttons for windows 10 default apps.... similar to chromium's chrome://apps protocol.

                                      • SSL key logging (aka SSLKEYLOGFILE)

SSL key logging is a feature that browsers export TLS keys into a text file, which can be used by Wireshark to decrypt TLS traffic. This feature can be enabled on Firefox and Chrome by setting SSLKEYLOGFILE environment variable, which is a path to the log file.

This feature is useful for debugging network error and for learning structures of TLS-encrypted application layer protocols (such as encrypted HTTP/2) with Wireshark.
