Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

    • Bring `gap` property to flexbox

      As outlined in the linked issue, having the ability to use grid-gap on flexbox (which is soon to be renamed just "gap" by the CSS Working Group because "grid-gap" doesn't make sense when used on flexbox) solves a major pain point that developers are facing.

      See the issue for more details:

      • Mac version of Edge

        Produce a Mac version of Edge so developers on Mac can see how their work effects Edge users. This would also improve the user experience for people running Edge on Windows.

          • Assigned Access

            Edge is supposed to be UWP!? Then why can't I choose it as the assigned app when setting up an Assigned Access Account in Windows 10 Pro? Edge really needs to support this Windows 10 feature. We are currently forced to download a third party browser app from the store to use a browser in this mode.

            • Support the `inert` attribute

              Trapping focus in modal dialogs or preventing focus in background layers in modern web applications is extremely difficult and error-prone. Developers either have to walk the DOM and disable every focusable control with tabindex="-1" and `aria-hidden="true"` on a parent element, or do some tricky JavaScript to maintain focus inside of an element. Many developers get this wrong or they don't do it at all, creating horribly inaccessible experiences for keyboard and screen reader users.

              The inert attribute currently being explored in the WICG solves this problem by providing a mechanism to disable entire subtrees in HTML. By setting `inert` on…

              • Implement Intelligent Tracking Protection (ITP) as in Safari, or equivalent protection

                A user-agent should act to protect its user's best interest. ITP is a sensible compromise between no privacy and ad-blocking since it enables advertising without abandoning data protection. Since there is no existing standard, Edge could experiment with an approach different from ITP, but it's a good starting point (and does not break the Web).

                  • Add feature detection for iframe sandbox tokens

                    Add the ability for developers to determine support for sandbox tokens and react accordingly. For example:

                    var iframe = document.createElement('iframe');
                    if (iframe.sandbox.supports('allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox')) {
                    alert('support tp');
                    }

                    • Spread operator for object literals

                      This feature is currently Stage 3 and is implemented by Firefox stable, Chrome stable, Safari Preview, and Node stable.

                      This is really useful for shallow cloning objects:

                      let objClone = { ...obj };

                          • Implement CSS 'overscroll-behavior'

                            Consider implementing the new CSS overscroll-behavior property.

                            ## Specification
                            This feature specification is being incubated in WICG:
                            https://wicg.github.io/overscroll-behavior/

                            Additional background on this feature may be found here:
                            https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/769

                            ## Summary
                            CSS overscroll-behavior standardizes a supercharged version of "-ms-scroll-chaining". It allows developers to determine the browser's behavior once a scroller has reached its full extent.
                            The unused delta can be propagated to the parent causing scroll chaining, create a glow/bounce effect without chaining, or just get consumed silently. In particular when used on viewport defining element, it controls if overscroll can be used for navigation actions such as pull-to-refresh or swipe…

                            • Support Media Queries level 4 syntax improvements

                              CSS Media Quries Level 4 bring in a bunch of syntactic improvements. They make media queries much more readable and maintainable.

                              https://drafts.csswg.org/mediaqueries-4/#mq-syntax

                              Here's an example:

                              Before:

                              @media (min-width: 20em), not all and (min-height: 40em) {
                              @media not all and (pointer: none) {

                              }
                              }

                              After:

                              @media ((width >= 20em) or (height < 40em)) and (pointer) {

                              }

                              • Asynchronous Clipboard API

                                The clipboard spec now has an asynchronous API [2] which is significantly more ergonomic than past clipboard APIs – it avoids various issues that the old document.execCommand("copy") approach had, and is much easier to use:

                                navigator.clipboard.writeText("hello world").then(...);

                                IE 9/10/11 shipped an unstandardized API for copying text or URLs to the clipboard. Edge shipped an older version of the draft standard clipboard/editing-spec-based-API [1], but it has numerous bugs and inconsistencies [2] that even *make it impossible to tell if the attempted copy action has succeeded*. Existing bugs aren't seeing attention, and it seems likely to me that there are more undiscovered…

                                  • RTSP Streaming Protocol Support

                                    The video surveillance industry relies heavily on the RTSP protocol (as implemented by ffmpeg, vlc media player, live555, etc) for streaming h264 and h265 video content.

                                    It's not a new protocol by any stretch but it is part of the ONVIF standard that essentially all video surveillance manufacturers use as well as part of the PSIA standard which a subset of the manufacturers also support (in addition to ONVIF).

                                    It's a simple protocol and there are plenty of open source implementations.

                                    HTML5 does not include equivalent functionality.

                                    WebRTC pushes VP8/9 and while it may support h264 it's often online baseline…

                                    • Implement Web Share API

                                      Web Share API landed on Chrome for Android in version 61. It's a neat way of providing native sharing hooks to a web app.

                                      • img decoding attribute

                                        https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/embedded-content.html#attr-img-decoding

                                        > Decoding of large images can block the main thread for hundreds of milliseconds or more, interrupting fluid animations and user interaction. Currently, there's no way for a web author to specify that they want an image to be decoded asynchronously, so there are scenarios where it is impossible to avoid UI stalls.

                                        Thus the new `decoding` attribute for the `img` element, with possible values:

                                        * `sync`: Indicates a preference to decode this image synchronously for atomic presentation with other content.

                                        * async: Indicates a preference to decode this image asynchronously to avoid delaying presentation of other content.

                                        *…

                                        • Proxy API support for extensions

                                          Proxy extensions such as SwitchyOmega needs Proxy API.
                                          It's not convenient to use IE proxy settings for more than one proxy server.
                                          We need proxy API. Chrome and Firefox have already support it many years ago.
