Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Ability to hide console.logs

Filters in console are currently unable to hide console.log() output unlike Chrome's filters.

Option to only show errors and warnings would be very welcome.

    • Touchscreen press not showing properties menu on elements shown on the Network tab.

I have a touchscreen monitor. When I am looking at the Network tab, I can see a list of elements. I can select an element by tapping on it. However, I am unable to access the properties menu (tap and press). Instead, I have to use a mouse to right-click on the element to see the properties menu. Can you add the touch screen (tap and press) gesture for accessing the properties of items shown on the Network tab? Thanks.

        • Show Lexical Scopes like Element/Form/Document for Inline Event Handler Callbacks

While writing an article to describe how browser's create a pseudo closure for inline event handlers, I found that Chrome had the ability to visualize these objects while F12 did not. If you review the article you'll find that by setting up an inline event handler on an element, some additional objects are injected into the scope chain of the function and under what circumstances. I would expect the F12 toolbar to be able to visualize these objects just like Chrome.

Here is the original article for reference:
          http://www.justrog.com/2015/05/do-browsers-create-closures-sometimes.html

Near the bottom you'll also find an image of Chrome's behavior…

          • Ability to export console errors with key stroke or with button

When using the console to debug often times there can be hundreds (even though many are the same) I would like to be able to export that log to more easily read through the issues.

Wether this is a key stroke or an added button, I think it would be a huge help.

            • Add a switch for the main contextmenu inside the developer tools

The main context menu for a website is very minimal, but...
E.g. here: "Select all" "insert" AND "inspect element" and "show source".
This is maybe good for developers, but most edge users are no developers and this both entries are pointless and maybe confusing.
In my opinion there should be a switch in the F12 Tools, or at another place, that enable and disable this both context menu entries.

              • Use Function names to represent Closure Scopes

This feature request has also been proposed
                - to the Chromium Web Inspector team:
                https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=493156
                - to the Firebug Devtools team:
                https://ffdevtools.uservoice.com/forums/246087-firefox-developer-tools-ideas/suggestions/8158806-use-function-names-to-represent-closure-scopes

Steps to reproduce a current problem:

                1. Write some JavaScript Code with closures created by named functions (either function declarations or named function expressions)
                2. set a breakpoint or a "debugger;" expression in an inner function
                3. Execute it with JavaScript Debugger activated

                What is the expected behavior?

The "Scope" panel of the JavaScript debugger represent all the accessible scopes at the current state of the execution.
When I want to watch the variables from a specific closure…

                • Make Developer tools more Front-End Dev Friendly and UI/UX appealing. Use Jsbin strategy

The Developer tools at its heart for the new Edge browser seem to continue the same styling thus UI/UX as the old IE browsers. I think you guys are missing an opportunity here. As a front end dev I really don't like - let me rephrase that - I despise using IE dev tools because of how poor the UI is.

I don't even understand what planet you're on... When you use Chrome dev tools, safari dev tools, fire fox dev tools, etc. the ui is IDE like almost.

You can copy and paste right from the dom explorer section.…

Window Resize option can be added. Instead of resizing the window, frame inside the window can be in resize mode like in firefox

                    • Allow developer tools to be larger when pinned

I have a side monitor that is in portrait orientation. I prefer to keep developer tools docked when I'm working, but with IE the height of the dev tools window is limited, which forces me to either work in a cramped area or undock the tools. Chrome and firefox both allow you to increase the size of the devtools to as tall as you'd like, which makes them much more usable with portrait screens.

                      • Before and After Pseudo Elements

This feature would extend the DOM tree in the DOM Explorer to include pseudo element as selectable elements (as if they were real nodes) so that the styles applied to them can be applied.

                        Proposed Design

                        - Items appear in the tree surrounded by a delimiter that indicates the 'pseudo' (e.g. :before)
                        - The node is selectable and once selected the CSS styles panes should be updated to reflect the style of the pseudo element the events pane should be empty
                        - All of the commands that impact the tree should be disabled (cut, copy, paste, add attribute, delete, etc.)

                            • @media print emulation

There is currently, as far as I can see, no way to view the layout of printed document and the CSS styles that will be applied when printed. In Chrome you can choose to emulate @media print mode and inspect the document.

I am trying to debug why the text of a document printed from Chrome and IE11 has such wildly different text sizes but I cannot trace the font-size styles in IE to compare it to the font-size in Chrome.

                              • Group computed style propeteries by category

This feature would add the ability to organize the view of computed CSS properties in the DOM Explorer into logical categories based on the CSS property.

                                Proposed Design
                                - Add a checkbox to the DOM Explorer computed styles tab labelled "Group by category"
                                - When enabled all CSS properties will. Exact grouping TBD but will be inspired by the grouping story in blend and awesomely logical and consistent (e.g. border, background etc.).

                                  • Security Tab - to show TLS/SSL, CSP, SRI, etc features

Add a "Security" tab to highlight features that the browser provides.

e.g. most developers have no idea what a CSP (Content Security Policy) header is... and even if implemented, the only way to view it is though the network headers (not easy to read).

This new tab can help list features, and make suggestions on how to make improvements (e.g. adding HSTS, or HPKP, or X-XSS-Protection, or X-Frame-Options headers).

                                    • Support the '.displayName' property for the F12 developer tools

Both Firefox and Safari support the '.displayName' property in their developer tools. Chrome has partial support (debugger - not yet profiler, but is working on it).

This is crucial for many of us that have large codebases of anonymous Functions.

A suggestion: over the years as this property has been added to the other browsers, the temptation has been to try to do some level of static analysis to determine Function names. In the end, this always fails to capture some use case given that JavaScript is incredibly flexible. Functions are Objects in JavaScript. A core idea in OO is…

                                      • console.table

It provides a way to display an array or an object as a table in Console.

                                        • Persist console settings

This feature would persist the state of the various toggles in the F12 console across sessions.

                                          Proposed Design
                                          - No UI changes
                                          - Any time any setting is changed the setting is written to disk
                                          - When F12 is loaded the settings are read from disk
                                          - Last in always wins and no sync across multiple open F12 sessions
                                          - The settings should use the same persistence system as other settings
