Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. auxclick event for non-primary buttons

Chrome and FireFox have shipped a new event for non-primary button click action. It is called 'auxclick'. Its specification is written in this WICG github repo.
    https://wicg.github.io/auxclick/

For example prevent defaulting an "auxclick" event with button==1 prevents opening a new tab if the clicked node is a link.

    • Next Billion Users.

The average website is at least 2MB in size. This does not bode well for the next billion users. Users who are coming online for the very first time. Users who come online with sub optimal 2G connections. They miss out on all the benefits of the internet.

Javascript libraries and frameworks add to the bloat. Instead of having each page download and use the Js files. Can a js framework be built into the browser itself. We can consider the browser to be a platform. Also, considering that a JS engine isn't enough. A step further will be highly…

      • "object not iterable" error message for spread operators

Currently attempting "for <var> of" on a object without an iterator would yield a "Object doesn't support property or method 'Symbol.iterator'" error message, while using the spread operator on the same object would only generate a "Function expected" message, giving developers a hard time figuring out what's going on. Edge should improve on this error reporting.

        • Support PBKDF2 in WebCrypto API

While Edge supports WebCrypto API, the PBKDF2 algorithm (see https://www.w3.org/TR/WebCryptoAPI/#pbkdf2) is unsupported. Gecko and Chromium support this algorithm and allow fast key derivation - for all the applications where you don't want to share your master key but only derived task-specific keys.

                    • support Web Crypto API inside a Web Worker

The Web Crypto API is not available inside a Web Worker. Both "self.crypto" and "self.msCrypto" are undefined inside a worker context.

                        • "Prevent this page from creating additional alerts"

while(true) { alert(); } currently brings an entire Edge window to its knees. While that's not an extremely common scenario, it would be nice to have a way to avoid it. Some large web apps also use alerts for announcing debug information, and it can get annoying to dismiss dozens of alerts that you already expect.

                            • Background GeoLocation/GPS support

As Edge Developers are about to begin implementing Service Workers and the Push API, can I please implore you to consider implementing the following functionality at the same time?

The proposed GeoFencing API is dead in the water and requestWakeLock() is a battery unfriendly sledge hammer to ***** a nut.

I propose a new W3C standard implementing a "TravelManager" and exposing the interface to ServiceWorkers. This interface would be very similar to the existing PushManager interface. E.g. ServiceWorkerRegistration.travelManager (getSubscription(), permissionState(), subscribe())

The subscribe() method with take options such as (minMsecs/metersl between position updates, accuracy, etc)

                              • requestIdleCallback

requestIdleCallback is the way that adopting requestAnimationFrame allowed us to schedule animations properly and maximize our chances of hitting 60fps, requestIdleCallback will schedule work when there is free time at the end of a frame, or when the user is inactive.

                                • Add implementation of ParentNode.children API

It looks like there is no implementation of the ParentNode.children api (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/ParentNode/children) in Edge, consider the following code

                                  var myXml = "<wrapper><inner><first>111</first><second>222</second></inner></wrapper>";
                                  var parser=new DOMParser();
                                  var xmlDoc=parser.parseFromString(myXml,"text/xml");
While in other browsers (including older IE) , the following xmlDoc.firstChild.children would return a list of HTML elements (HTML Collection object), in Edge it does not (return undefined)

See the following https://jsfiddle.net/5ke81x0q/ test case

                                    • Support document.execCommand('styleWithCSS', null, true); in rich-text API

Currently Edge doesn't support it, document.queryCommandSupported('styleWithCSS') returns false.

It's useful to replace the old tags like <font size="2" face="Arial"> or align="right" with their newer style equivalent

                                      • CORS information should be persistant in Blob.

                                        Current flow what I have:
                                        - A.js (what has been loaded with CORS) loads B.js using XMLHttpRequest
                                        - content of B.js is stored in Blob
                                        - create in JS a script element what points to address of Blob
                                        Effect: B.js throws 'Script Error'

If I create a script element what points directly at B.js then it works. So some information is missing after moving to Blob. (Or just loading from Blob is not CORS friendly?)

                                        • Enable JS debugging from VS for Edge

I was shocked to find that VS 2015 can't debug JS running in Edge (yet it can debug WWAs using EdgeHTML?). I hope this will be fixed soon, but it means that IE 11 is the only option for end-to-end debugging in VS, which is unfortunate.
