Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Ability to "View DOM" in dev tools

It was possible to View DOM in IE10. Then this functionality has disappeared in IE11 and is not present in Edge. With the async nature of the web these days I need to view a full (as it stand right now - in a given moment in time) on a regular basis.
I don't want to find element and then keep expanding various divs and spans. I'd like to get the whole DOM as text.
    Great for security analysis too.

    • Bring Back the Attributes Tab in IE11 F12 Tool - like it was in preious versions

      I'm using the re-designed IE.11 F12 Developers Tools.
In the past I have mostly used to tool to grab attribute details.
Such as '.id', .text, .href, as well as read only attributes or properties.
All of these which were lifted from the html and represented on the right hand window in an easy to read list of names & values.

In the recent release of the Developer Tools in IE 11 I can see DOM Explorer and in the right hand window Styles/Computed/Layout/Event/Changes.
But I can't see any 'id' or text type attributes.

Where has MS hidden the attributes?

      • Javascript debugger break when specified file URI has been loaded

Sometimes with 3rd party libraries, they load script files programmatically. It would help narrow down who is loading a specific file if you could break in the debugger when a specific URI/regex pattern is requested. Either with adding a script element dynamically, or via AJAX.

        • Include HTML validation/error log

The very first step in debugging is to be sure that there are no initial errors, so it would be great if MS Edge could optionally log HTML validation errors as the page loads, or upon validation request.

          Request for Firefox: https://ffdevtools.uservoice.com/forums/246087-firefox-developer-tools-ideas/suggestions/9335388-include-html-validation-error-log

          • Add style visualizations / visual editor to DOM Explorer

See what WebKit recently added, or the old HTML version of Blend, for examples:
            http://twitter.com/webkit/statuses/634392489579925504

Personally I'd love to see this in VS 2015's DOM Explorer (once you make that work with Edge). But it'd also be great to have in the F12 tools.

            • Ability to hide console.logs

Filters in console are currently unable to hide console.log() output unlike Chrome's filters.

Option to only show errors and warnings would be very welcome.

              • Touchscreen press not showing properties menu on elements shown on the Network tab.

I have a touchscreen monitor. When I am looking at the Network tab, I can see a list of elements. I can select an element by tapping on it. However, I am unable to access the properties menu (tap and press). Instead, I have to use a mouse to right-click on the element to see the properties menu. Can you add the touch screen (tap and press) gesture for accessing the properties of items shown on the Network tab? Thanks.

                  • Show Lexical Scopes like Element/Form/Document for Inline Event Handler Callbacks

While writing an article to describe how browser's create a pseudo closure for inline event handlers, I found that Chrome had the ability to visualize these objects while F12 did not. If you review the article you'll find that by setting up an inline event handler on an element, some additional objects are injected into the scope chain of the function and under what circumstances. I would expect the F12 toolbar to be able to visualize these objects just like Chrome.

Here is the original article for reference:
                    http://www.justrog.com/2015/05/do-browsers-create-closures-sometimes.html

Near the bottom you'll also find an image of Chrome's behavior…

                    • Ability to export console errors with key stroke or with button

When using the console to debug often times there can be hundreds (even though many are the same) I would like to be able to export that log to more easily read through the issues.

Wether this is a key stroke or an added button, I think it would be a huge help.

                      • Add a switch for the main contextmenu inside the developer tools

The main context menu for a website is very minimal, but...
E.g. here: "Select all" "insert" AND "inspect element" and "show source".
This is maybe good for developers, but most edge users are no developers and this both entries are pointless and maybe confusing.
In my opinion there should be a switch in the F12 Tools, or at another place, that enable and disable this both context menu entries.

                        • Use Function names to represent Closure Scopes

This feature request has also been proposed
                          - to the Chromium Web Inspector team:
                          https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=493156
                          - to the Firebug Devtools team:
                          https://ffdevtools.uservoice.com/forums/246087-firefox-developer-tools-ideas/suggestions/8158806-use-function-names-to-represent-closure-scopes

Steps to reproduce a current problem:

                          1. Write some JavaScript Code with closures created by named functions (either function declarations or named function expressions)
                          2. set a breakpoint or a "debugger;" expression in an inner function
                          3. Execute it with JavaScript Debugger activated

                          What is the expected behavior?

The "Scope" panel of the JavaScript debugger represent all the accessible scopes at the current state of the execution.
When I want to watch the variables from a specific closure…

                          • Make Developer tools more Front-End Dev Friendly and UI/UX appealing. Use Jsbin strategy

The Developer tools at its heart for the new Edge browser seem to continue the same styling thus UI/UX as the old IE browsers. I think you guys are missing an opportunity here. As a front end dev I really don't like - let me rephrase that - I despise using IE dev tools because of how poor the UI is.

I don't even understand what planet you're on... When you use Chrome dev tools, safari dev tools, fire fox dev tools, etc. the ui is IDE like almost.

You can copy and paste right from the dom explorer section.…

                              • Allow developer tools to be larger when pinned

I have a side monitor that is in portrait orientation. I prefer to keep developer tools docked when I'm working, but with IE the height of the dev tools window is limited, which forces me to either work in a cramped area or undock the tools. Chrome and firefox both allow you to increase the size of the devtools to as tall as you'd like, which makes them much more usable with portrait screens.

                                • Before and After Pseudo Elements

This feature would extend the DOM tree in the DOM Explorer to include pseudo element as selectable elements (as if they were real nodes) so that the styles applied to them can be applied.

                                  Proposed Design

                                  - Items appear in the tree surrounded by a delimiter that indicates the 'pseudo' (e.g. :before)

                                  • Increase size of find text box

It's difficult to enter long DOM selectors in such a small text box.

                                    • Add option for logging timestamp to console

Please add an option where we can enable timestamps to be shown in calls to console.log(). This makes it easier to determine when important areas for logging occur which helps with why.

                                      • Allow for Preview as Phone or Preview as Tablet

Add an option to view a page as it would be displayed on a Phone (small Portrait) or Tablet (medium Landscape). Currently I see little difference in selecting (Emulation tab) Browser profile= Desktop or Browser profile= Windows Phone.

                                        • @media print emulation

There is currently, as far as I can see, no way to view the layout of printed document and the CSS styles that will be applied when printed. In Chrome you can choose to emulate @media print mode and inspect the document.

I am trying to debug why the text of a document printed from Chrome and IE11 has such wildly different text sizes but I cannot trace the font-size styles in IE to compare it to the font-size in Chrome.
