Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

  1. SVG Icons

The extensions design guidance lists 20 possible icon sizes (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/extensions/guides/design). When rendering a simple icon I can easily have 5x growth in payload focused on images than the actual code itself. It would be better to ship an SVG and work with downstream systems to consume that as a more efficient mechanism.

  3. Downloads API support for extensions

Missing Downloads API support is not good. I wanted to port my extension but it relies on basic downloads API missing in Edge.

  4. pdf

stop hijacking PDFs with your terrible Edge app. I don't use Edge as my browser, but when I select open with Adobe, and set the default app to Adobe, Edge overrides it every time. Terrible. Adobe reader is great and Edge is very weak. please please stop it. it is the biggest flaw with Windows 10 (even worse than the games and bloatware)

  5. Extension for mobile

Extension for the mobile app (android/ios) of Edge! This would push Edge on top of the rest for many users.

  6. Support browser_url_overrides to allow customized net tab page, etc. (since users can't set their own choice of new tab page...)

Edge currently offers very few options for controlling the new tab experience, and the ones it does have are... not popular, judging by the Windows Insider feedback. Allowing extensions to override things like New Tab page would simultaneously address this concern and allow more Chrome extensions to be ported, making Edge a much nicer browser to use.

  9. "extension permission to use this extension type"

    Hello,
The process of getting permission to use the appx extension type (which seems to be required in order to publish an edge extension) is blocked by Microsoft. It is unclear why I don't get permission and I didn't receive any response on my questions for about three weeks now. My customers are waiting however and I did pay Microsoft so I do expect support to get the extension published.
My extensions store ID is 9P16GP71KWZT.
The chrome version of the extension is available in the chrome store.

  10. Implement externally_connectable from webpages to extensions

Chrome enables webpages to send messages to cooperating extensions who allow this via the externally_connectable manifest property.

This is better than hacks using content scripts because content scripts give the extension full access to the webpage. Chrome can present a much more palatable permission prompt as a result ("Communicate with cooperating websites" rather than "Read and change all your data")

Firefox is tracking this feature here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1319168

  12. Add browser.omnibox APIs

browser.omnibox enables WebExtensions to implement customised behavior when the user types into the browser's address bar.

  13. Native messaging!

Please implement Native messaging mechanism! Internet Banking users are used to sign their contracts via a smart card (which uses WinCrypt API). Nowadays, after deprecation of applets, there is no other way to access Windows API and use a smart card in order to make a trusted digital signature.

  14. Add support for the "commands" API

Add support for the "commands" API to listen for the user executing commands registered using the manifest of an extension, like the media keys or key combinations.

  15. Support "chrome.identity" API

Chrome, FireFox, and Opera support the chrome.identity API to handle oauth2 authentication flows. At least the methods launchWebAuthFlow and getRedirectURL are needed to support an oauth2 flow forarbitrary oauth providers siuch as Microsoft, Google, Facebook, LInkedin, etc.

This API is really missing from edge.

  16. Will `proxy` API be supported in Microsoft Edge extensions

I currently manage a top Proxy extension in Chrome, and will like to port it to the new Microsoft Edge.

However, the `proxy` API seem to be missing/not implemented. Is this true?

Will this fact change? Any timeline?

  17. Drag & Drop URL to create a Shortcut-Link in Explorer

Drag & Drop URL to create a Shortcut-Link in Explorer (as in IE 11 / Firefox, etc.)
For that reason I must switch to Firefox instead of using Edge

  18. Allow extensions to exist on the Devtools Pane

Extensions such as the AngularJs Batarang need to exist on the Devtools page and not in the main browser. Please add this functionality so that tabs can be added to DevTools.

  20. REQ: Edge Extension - Microsoft Authenticator

Microsoft Authenticator Edge Extension would be useful as we are entering a world of MFA for many services. Something similar to authy in chrome.
