Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  4. Option to disable auto-disabling of unsigned extensions

There are plugins I have either written or ported from chrome myself, which I have no intention of submitting to the store either because I intend them for my own personal use or don't own the rights to redistribute them.

Edge, however, wants to make life difficult for me, by automatically disabling these plugins every time I start the browser, forcing me to manually re-enable them.

I would very much appreciate an option somewhere, perhaps in about:flags, to disable this unwanted and unwelcome behavior. You don't need to overstep your bounds when it comes to trying to protect me; I'm…

  5. Proxy API support for extensions

Proxy extensions such as SwitchyOmega needs Proxy API.
It's not convenient to use IE proxy settings for more than one proxy server.
We need proxy API. Chrome and Firefox have already support it many years ago.

  6. Allow cookies for whitelisted pages only

Due to privacy violations, I decided to block permamently browser cookies and allow only certain websites (eg my bank or auction site) to access cookies. There was a "Cookie Monster" plugin in Firefox.

  7. Terrible extensions guide

I'd like to know how to write extensions for Edge without having to write them for Chrome first and then port them over.

  8. Remove Share/ Add Notes or a turn off option

Not everybody wants a share and add notes button. I personally have no use for them and it simply clutters my browser. I would like to see a turn off option for these add ons. I don't like them and don't want them. Having the option to remove pointless and annoying add ons that YOU have decided I want or need should be an option. Whatever happened to freedom of choice. I should have that option to choose whether I want these add ons or not. And I don't PLEASE rectify this as I know many are unhappy these add…

  10. Please support imageData for pageAction.setIcon

I've been attempting to port a simple Chrome extension which builds its icon dynamically to reflect the state of the current page (which would otherwise require 40 distinct icons), and this is currently blocking me. Can't imagine I'm the only one by a long chalk.

  11. A way of automatic installation of extensions

All other major web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer) provide some way to install an add-on/extension by the application installer. Most antivirus programs and download managers make use of this capability.

With Edge, the end user, after installing the main application, has to go to the Store and add the corresponding Edge extension manually herself.

There should be way for the extension publisher to obtain Microsoft-signed extension package from the Developer Dashboard, and include it along with the main application installer, to be added later to users' systems by powershell's Add-AppxPackage, or its equivalent.

  12. Give extensions access to Windows.Services.Store for in-app purchasing

It would be useful to give Edge extensions access to Windows.Services.Store so that they can easily integrate in-app purchasing and trial-restricted features via the Microsoft Store.

  13. File API support for extensions

One great addition to Edge extensions would be the ability to write files .

There are of course security issues related to reading or writing files to the file system, but at some point, Edge will support the Downloads API (6 out of the 20 most popular Firefox extensions rely on this API). This API (chrome.downloads) allows to write a file to the Downloads folder out of an external URL. Why not then allow an extension to generate files limited to that folder ?

That would allow saving videos (some streaming protocols need processing so the Downloads API is not…

  15. I am switching back to Chrome or Opera because I cannot find extension such as StayFocusd is for Chrome or Leechblock is for Firefox

I overall like the improvements that come with Edge over the IE versions. I almost was going to stay with Edge, but didn't find that important extension that I need. Also, the option to disable Edge would be good in case I want to enable it in the future. Right now, I hate the process that I need to go thru to disable it. Way better if I could disable it as with Windows 7 had with IE.

  16. We have been trying to submit an extension for more than 2 months and have never received any feedback on our access request to the Store

We are only receiving the following message: "It looks like we've already received a submission for this Store ID. Please verify that the ID you entered is correct. If so, please bear with us while we work through all the requests we've received."

    Please advise.

  19. Add support for History API in Extensions

Our browser extension, that is currently available for Firefox and Chrome, relies on History API. Without this API we cannot port our extension to Edge.
