Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. I would like IE to show unicode characters in the url bar

I would like IE to show unicode characters in the url bar

One feature I like in Chrome is that the url textbox displays Unicode characters. If I search in youtube смешной (funny), Chrome would display
    https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=смешной

    while IE
    https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%D1%81%D0%BC%D0%B5%D1%88%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B9

It's easier to paste a new keyword in the url textbox to replace the old one, since youtube as other sites do not keep other settings from one search to the other (sortby, period, etc), so instead of pasting a new keyword in the youtube's page text search box and hit the search button and start all over again…

On December 15th of 2011 Microsoft made a big change that largely goes unnoticed by the vast majority of users; updates to Internet Explorer began to happen automatically.

Today, Microsoft continues to install the latest updates for Internet Explorer supported by the user’s operating system without getting in the way. With Internet Explorer 10 we also added a UI control to the “About Internet Explorer” window which gave the end-user easier control over this process.

Understandably there are some situations in which auto-updates are not desired. For instance, enterprise customers may (and do) choose to opt-out of these updates due to a reliance upon older versions of Internet Explorer internally.

Tasked with supporting legacy applications, while also supporting the advancing web, the Internet Explorer team developed Enterprise Mode for Internet Explorer 11. This feature is designed to grant the user all of the security and speed of a modern browser,…

      • Collaborate on and push a new standard for "active updates' (pinning to task and start)

As far as I know, there is no one standard for how things like pinning sites to "taskbar" or "start", iconography, having pushed or polled content, work.

My website has about 30 lines of HTML meta lines to handle new IE, older versions of IE, and Safari on iPad, etc.

Let's create one standard at the W3C and have everyone follow it.

        • First Open Source IE

Open Source IE, You are not making any money off of IE. Then why keep it closed , also every other browser is light years ahead of IE, then what strategic advantage does it serve ?

Keeping IE closed will hurt the company , and making it opensource will expose tons of bugs initially but in long run if you are able to build a successful open source community may be it may turn around the plates and many developers who left windows might comeback.

Not many people want to use IE infact many people i know first download a…

          • Add a "standards" option (or something) on the category dropdown, please

I'm surprised that if you have a "miscellaneous" in the dropdown above, there is no "web standards" or "standards" dropdown. This would be a good place to collect all the ideas that are standards related, right?

            • Implement the W3C Efficient XML Interchange standard

EXI has now been a standard since 2008. It is time to provide this "binary XML support" to get the fat out of web transfers for all sites. I'm also trying to champion this idea with the .NET and ASP.NET communities and look forward to the day we can say it is done.
              -thanks

              • compatability mode

For single host, allow different compatibility mode settings per port. Primarily for developers who need to maintain older sites but also design new sites and test locally using IIS or IIS Express where "localhost" needs to be in compatibility mode for some sites and in edge mode for others.

                • Implement the same SSL fallback mechanism in old versions of IE

IE11 soon will will prevent insecure fallback to SSL 3.0 for Protected Mode sites. The same security mechanism should be applied to the older versions of IE11 as well.

                  • headless browser for testing

It would be great if IE could be started as a headless browser (like PhantomJS) for running unit tests, taking screenshots, measuring load time, etc without having a browser window pop up. Running automated tests on IE often fails because the browser either fails to start up or shut down properly. With a headless browser multiple browser instances can be run in parallel without taking up screen space.

                    • Automatic SSL certificate selection based on URL

Google Chrome has a group policy "AutoSelectCertificateForUrls". IE could offer a similar functionality to say "this certificate is for these URLs", that is a list of URLs to be maintained per certificate. Or map URL patterns to certificates based on their attributes, e.g. Issuer or FriendlyName. The IE then automatically selects the right certificate and the user is freed from the decision, which certificate to choose, especially if he has more than one from the same Root CA. The certificate selection dialog is then only needed if the same URL is configured for more than one certificate or no URLs…

                      • Improve IE Certificate Handling

Visiting web page that require certificate based authentication and authorization pop up window with currently installed certificates, showing you the available and valid certificates. This is ok. But if you have to renew a certificate (because of expiration policy) and install the new one (having the old and the new installed at the same time and certificate store) it will not show as available to authenticate with. I guess there is some grouping happening and taking the first certificate or something similar.
The expected behavior is to show the newly installed certificate even if the old is still installed.

                        • Change development cycle for frequent updates

IE falling behind before it was released. All major browsers has release cycles less than IE has between announcement and release.
Also, old version do not get updates.
Drop version from name and start actively supporting IE.

The IE tabs are crashing and unreliable. I dont want to loose my work so I have to use other browsers.

                            1. Open 1-10 tabs
                            2. Start closing them one by one
at some point some it starts crashing. If not, start again

                            • Improve support for editing files locally

I often have problems viewing complex documents locally in IE. They work perfectly when uploaded to a server, but for some reason locally IE doesn't see my css @import rules, or doesn't register certain scripts for inexplicable reasons, or various other issues like that. Websites should render locally exactly as they do server side wherever possible. Obviously I don't expect things like PHP code to work, but anything that can work, should.

                              • Make IE handle favicon like other browsers - any changes are reflected immediately

I don't what it is about IE but look out if you change the favicon for your site. I think IE caches the original one and getting it to recognize the new is a major pain.

                                • Enable iframes to choose a document mode independant of the document mode of the page that is hosting the iframe

We develop a large browser based financial accounting application. We are currently migrating our application from IE5 quirks mode to edge mode.

Customers can integrate the UI of our application into other web based applications. Our app is running inside of iframes in many other applications (for example, ERP software). When we now migrate to edge mode, all those integrations will break, because the document mode of our iframe is determined by the other applications that integrate our UI.

We need the possibility to migrate our application to edge mode without breaking all those other applications that integrate our UI.

                                        • Allow to use other HTML engines from Chrome or Firefox

IE always was problematic form developer point of view. I always need to google-hacks or I had to write additional code. Only once in my life IE works better than other browsers (IE10 and minor CSS issue works as expected in IE). Trusted engines should be easy to switch for any user. Allowing to use other engines under IE will solve a lot of coding just for IE only. Like https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/WICKET-5608 special patch for one IE version. When new IE version was released patch was not needed however I need to add new script-code and rewrite functions.
