Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

    • Before and After Pseudo Elements

This feature would extend the DOM tree in the DOM Explorer to include pseudo element as selectable elements (as if they were real nodes) so that the styles applied to them can be applied.

      Proposed Design

      - Items appear in the tree surrounded by a delimiter that indicates the 'pseudo' (e.g. :before)
      - The node is selectable and once selected the CSS styles panes should be updated to reflect the style of the pseudo element the events pane should be empty
      - All of the commands that impact the tree should be disabled (cut, copy, paste, add attribute, delete, etc.)

      • all:initial

Supported by Firefox and Chrome and gives the developer more control over CSS cascading. This would be helpful when when writing components that get inserted in other environments.

Preferably both property: initial and all: initial would be supported.

        • CSS Intrinsic Sizing

Extends the CSS sizing properties with keywords that represent content-based "intrinsic" sizes and context-based "extrinsic" sizes, allowing CSS to more easily describe boxes that fit their content or fit into a particular layout context.

                    • Offline mode is not available in MS Edge.

Some developers may need offline mode from testing perspective similar to Chrome's "Inspector->Network Tab->Offline".

                      • Allow SendKeys to an <input type="file"> for file uploading

Using the WebDriver for Edge, and trying to use SendKeys to affect an <input type="file">, we get an error message that the element isn't focusable.

This is something that works in other browsers. It's the simplest way to upload a file in Selenium since WebDriver can't interact with a file dialog on the desktop.

This has been reported as an issue before:

                        https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/platform/issues/7194303/

...but the only response has been "fixed internally" a year ago, which doesn't help those of us who don't work for Microsoft.

If Edge is important to Microsoft, then you'll want web sites to work with it.…

                        • Aggressively promote the replacement of HTTP with HTTPS

The video linked below makes it very clear on why HTTPS should always be used instead of HTTP.
                          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BNIkw4Ao9w

Currently, all that happens in Microsoft Edge when you connect to a web page through HTTP is that a "🛈" icon appears in the address bar. Since the web page still works, there is little pressure on web developers to drop support of HTTP in favour of using HTTPS. In essence, by treating HTTP almost identically to HTTPS in Microsoft Edge, Microsoft is not doing its part in promoting a safer, more secure, privacy-respecting Internet.

                          Microsoft should be a leader—more aggressive…

                            • Fully implement the FormData API

Currently the FormData API is only partially implemented in Edge. Most of the more useful methods are missing including: has(), get(), set(), delete(), entries(), and many others.

FormData is already fully implemented on the other major browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Safari) - see: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/platform/catalog/?q=formdata

                                • Add "Always Allow" to Adobe Flash popup

Now in Edge (Windows 10 1809), enabling Flash for a website doesn't persist after closing the page as it did before the update. The option "Allow Once" is the only option available -- "Always Allow" is not shown -- so every time you open a site you must re-allow Flash

                                    • lazyLoad

Currently, LazyLoad ( https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/dn369270(v=vs.94) ) is implemented in IE and Edge, see support: https://caniuse.com/#feat=lazyload

However there is interest in standardization to enable developers lazy-loading images/iframes and other embedded content (and the proposed lazyLoad's attribute values differ from that of current Edge/IE implementation):

                                      • Cursor on a new tab

Cursor on a new tab should be automatically on the address bar, so once the new tab is opened, no need to click on the address bar to enter URL. Rather the user can directly start writing on the URL after opening the tab.

                                        • Please open-source Edge.

I would really like Edge to succeed and stay competitive in the browser market. However, at the rate of features being added and bugs being fixed, it doesn't seem like that's going to happen.

Please consider open-sourcing Edge to allow the community to help bring it up to speed faster.

(As a side note, it seems like the Android version of Edge has better feature support than the desktop version, especially for WebRTC. I don't know what that's about.)
