Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Improve support for editing files locally

    I often have problems viewing complex documents locally in IE. They work perfectly when uploaded to a server, but for some reason locally IE doesn't see my css @import rules, or doesn't register certain scripts for inexplicable reasons, or various other issues like that. Websites should render locally exactly as they do server side wherever possible. Obviously I don't expect things like PHP code to work, but anything that can work, should.

    • <datalist> size and style

      Hi,

      I'm creating a contact form and I was using the <select> tag and I discovered the <datalist> tag and I think it's very useful, because it's dynamic (you can write and have some options at the same time). The problem is that I can't minimize the list of option with size="5" like with <select> tag. With <datalist>, I have like 30 options showing at the same time without scrollbar, so we can't see all of them...

      My suggestion is to add css style like with <select> to change how the datalist look (color, shape, etc) and to be able…

      • Allow dom elements created on one window to be used in another (for popout windows)

        IE is the only browser that doesn't allow a element created on one window to be added to another. This is useful when creating popout windows in a web application and not all frameworks allow you to specify the document with which to create the element with.

        • Gamepad API: Support Gamepad Vibration & Force Feedback effects

          There is the proposed Gamepad API http://caniuse.com/#search=gamepad in development, however the specification does not have any planned means of utilizing vibration in gamepads.

          It is a rather basic feature that enhances the gaming experience.
          There should be a recommendation for it or prefixed functionality for IE. A complementary function to the API like myGamepad.setVibration(leftMotor, rightMotor) would be ideal.

          In the future I'd also like to see a way to have force feedback effects for devices that support them, like Joysticks and Steering Wheels which would be useful for simulators and medical applications.

          Thanks in advance!

          • Make the Escape key open the console when using the F12 tools

            This keyboard shortcut just seems to make sense to me and matches what Chrome and Firefox do. CTRL+` doesn't feel as obvious.

            • Split IE into two versions: Normal and Developer mode

              You should split IE into two different browsers/executables:
              One default for normal user where devtools is not available(which may result in better performance?)
              One for developers where the tools are available and where the browser GUI itself can include debugging tools shortcuts etc.

              • Log XmlHttpRequests to the console

                This feature would log every XHR based network request to the console.

                Proposed design:
                - Console message with the URL that is being requested
                - Link to view the request in the network tool
                - Link to the source location that triggered the XHR

                    • Developer Tools -> Detecting leaked memory by pointing out disconnected nodes

                      I find the Memory debugging tool good, what I am missing is to be able to see disconnected nodes easily and what is keeping them alive.

                      For example, these nodes may appear in the DOM Explorer colored differently in the bottom of the node tree - or in a separate section.

                      Then I would like to be able to click such a disconnected node and immediately see the js variable and code that keeps it alive, instead of drilling through stack traces and GC root views.

                        • Line numbers in console

                          This feature would show the source location (line & column) of a message logged via console.*.

                          • An option, to exclude particular line from stopping at with "break on all exceptions" enabled

                            Many JS frameworks still use constructs like
                            try{
                            do-some-browser1-specific-stuff();
                            }catch(e){
                            do-some-browser2-specific-stuff();
                            }

                            Which, when "Break on all exceptions" is enabled, hurt debugging a lot.

                            It would be nice to exclude some lines like this do-some-browser1-specific-stuff(); from breaking.

                            • Ajax caching working like other browsers

                              Internet Explorer caches ajax responses too agressively. In the modern SPA world, everything is working through AJAX request, so it is more and more important, to not cache automatically all of the AJAX responses. Firefox and Chrome is working normal with AJAX responses, only IE caches too agressively.

                                • Improve video event and seeking mechanisms

                                  Some things are handled not correctly regarding the HTML5 video abilities:
                                  - IE does not fire the resize event
                                  - no waiting event on buffer underrun
                                  - canplay and canplaythrough events are missing if you seek
                                  - pause event is missing after the playback ends
                                  - seeked event is fired without change of the image (in 86% of all cases)
                                  - timeupdate is fired in waiting state

                                  Please work on a more robust video API. A more elaborated description can be found at http://www.ronpub.com/publications/OJWT-v1i2n01_Hoernig.pdf

                                  • Support frames in the developer tools

                                    The F12 tools currently don't work well with frames.

                                    We are already working on a version of our application that does not use frames any more. However, we will have to support existing releases of our software that use frames for at least a year or longer. Beeing unable to use F12 tools in IE11 with our old releases is really annoying and requires us to use VMs with IE10 to diagnose issues.

                                      • Enable iframes to choose a document mode independant of the document mode of the page that is hosting the iframe

                                        We develop a large browser based financial accounting application. We are currently migrating our application from IE5 quirks mode to edge mode.

                                        Customers can integrate the UI of our application into other web based applications. Our app is running inside of iframes in many other applications (for example, ERP software). When we now migrate to edge mode, all those integrations will break, because the document mode of our iframe is determined by the other applications that integrate our UI.

                                        We need the possibility to migrate our application to edge mode without breaking all those other applications that integrate our UI.

                                        • Make IE handle favicon like other browsers - any changes are reflected immediately

                                          I don't what it is about IE but look out if you change the favicon for your site. I think IE caches the original one and getting it to recognize the new is a major pain.
