Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

    • The WebDriver should not close currently open windows when starting automated testing

I use Edge as my primary browser, but I also use NCrunch to drive automated UI testing for our web-based applications. When NCrunch kicks off tests impacted by changes I have made, by Edge browsers shut down, with all the tabs and windows lost forever.
The IE Web Driver didn't have this issue and while I know that the browsers are not the same, the expectation is that they would behave similarly.
Allowing the Edge Web Driver to trigger and manage its own windows, separate from any that the user has opened and is currently using, would be a welcomed…

      • Make the element finder work with standard selectors

If trying to search for an id by using the selector #myID, nothing will be found, only by entering myID, but this might return text elements, classes, and all sorts of other things that are undesirable. Should also be able to search by classes, xpath etc.

        • remember htaccess login details

Edge can´t remember htaccess login details. Please add this feature. The workaround with IE is not very useful because i don´t want to use IE.

            • webpages interact with EDGE highlight feature

EDGE has a nice feature where users can highlight text on a webpage, and then send a copy(?) of that webpage to other users, with the annotations on it. Edge also can do this now with PDFs. The next logical step, from my point of view as a developer, is to let webpage javascript get information from these highlights. For instance, lets suppose I use html 'frames tag' to host one webpage in another. My user highlights the page (or HTML) in that frame, and an event fires letting me capture the text that he highlighted. Conversely, if my code…

              • Add support for RFC4709: Mounting Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) Servers

Right now, getting people to mount a webdav folder involves and end user following various complicated instructions to manually mount the server using "Add network location".

What should be possible is for the end user to click on a link, and have the process kicked off as if they used the "Add a network location" and entered a webdav endpoint.

This will drastically reduce the administrative burden of configuring webdav drives, in an RFC compliant manner.

                • Only Allow AppCache over HTTPS

AppCache should be removed from insecure contexts. Since AppCache allows offline and persistent access to an origin, this can be an XSS attack vector that can be exploited

                  • Block Cross-Origin <a download>

While Microsoft Edge mitigates the impact of cross-origin downloads by changing the file extension, it is still a risk and the presence of the download attribute on anchor elements with cross-origin attributes should still be ignored

                      • Support Feature Policy

                        https://wicg.github.io/feature-policy

Feature policy is a mechanism for developers to enable and disable web platform features on their sites, in their pages and in third-party content which they have framed.

It allows control of existing features such as XMLHttpRequest and geolocation, as well as new features such as WebVR

                            • Implement Intelligent Tracking Protection (ITP) as in Safari, or equivalent protection

A user-agent should act to protect its user's best interest. ITP is a sensible compromise between no privacy and ad-blocking since it enables advertising without abandoning data protection. Since there is no existing standard, Edge could experiment with an approach different from ITP, but it's a good starting point (and does not break the Web).

                              • Implement externally_connectable from webpages to extensions

Chrome enables webpages to send messages to cooperating extensions who allow this via the externally_connectable manifest property.

This is better than hacks using content scripts because content scripts give the extension full access to the webpage. Chrome can present a much more palatable permission prompt as a result ("Communicate with cooperating websites" rather than "Read and change all your data")

Firefox is tracking this feature here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1319168

                                      • Asynchronous Clipboard API

The clipboard spec now has an asynchronous API [2] which is significantly more ergonomic than past clipboard APIs – it avoids various issues that the old document.execCommand("copy") approach had, and is much easier to use:

                                        navigator.clipboard.writeText("hello world").then(...);

IE 9/10/11 shipped an unstandardized API for copying text or URLs to the clipboard. Edge shipped an older version of the draft standard clipboard/editing-spec-based-API [1], but it has numerous bugs and inconsistencies [2] that even *make it impossible to tell if the attempted copy action has succeeded*. Existing bugs aren't seeing attention, and it seems likely to me that there are more undiscovered…

                                        • Send window inner dimensions and screen DPI to the server with every request

This is not a thing at the present time in any browser AFAIK, but wouldn't it be magical if SSR code could know exactly how many pixels it needs to render? We could optimize image sizes, we could try to render fonts server side, we could execute media/viewport queries and know the meanings of %-based layouts all before the page even makes it to the client. We could also compute layout on the server and decide to fetch less data (only above the fold for example) for smaller screens during initial page load. I'm surprised we haven't done this a…
