Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Allow developers to freely publish extension in Microsoft Store

For now very limited number of developers allowed to publish own extension in Microsoft Store and make own work available to users. Also there is no any way of how everyone else can be notified that extensions publishing to Microsoft Store is already possible. At least I hope that this issue can serve for this purpose, for everyone who vote for it.

Thank you for the feedback! We did start with a small number of publishers to validate the Edge extensions platform but have since updated and streamlined the Store submission to accept submissions from anyone. The extensions are still vetted for security, performance and other considerations but you can see that they are now being added at a much faster pace.

    • Support Chrome's improved reload behavior or cache-control:immutable

Both Chrome and Firefox have improved the performance of the reload button. Chrome no longer revalidates subresoruces on reloads. Firefox supports the cache-control:immutable header as a way for sites to signal that they do not want their sub resources revalidated before their expiration

Facebook's internal statistics show that browsers that do not support this behavior cause 10-20% more requests for JS/CSS because users use the reload button to refresh the site.

      • Support dataset and data attributes on SVG elements

Support for dataset and data attributes are included in SVG 2.

It is currently supported by Firefox 51+, Chrome 54+, old Android Browser and Safari 5.1+. (source: http://caniuse.com/#feat=dataset)

        • Provide tutorial and descent documentation for writing extension

The documentation has no single page (or if there's one, it's so hidden that I wasn't able to find it) that shows how to create extension.

Please provide a correct documentation to get started writing extension - or highlight the existing one if any.

I guess the adoption of Edge is directly tied to the number of available extensions, which is very low by now.

            • Improve Promise implementation performance

Edge's Promises are a lot slower than the implementations in other browsers. This causes severe problems in Promise heavy APIs.

Here is a fiddle that demonstrates the issue: https://jsfiddle.net/jdanyow/vj6o119n/

In Chrome this executes in 1m - 4ms.

In Edge it takes around 3500ms

                • add support for web assembly as early as possible, keeping pace with mozilla

In line with webgl support, be ahead if the curve in supporting the emerging web assembly standard.

Be ahead of the curve or at least on par with Mozilla, to be first or joint first in supporting this exciting new capability (even in beta or early release testing)

                  Don't make us wait!!

                      • Support Web Worker creation via blob URLs

Currently in Firefox and Chrome you can create a new Worker() using JavaScript defined as a Blob URL. In IE and Edge, you cannot.

This Blob trick is very convenient, because it allows JavaScript libraries to seamlessly expose WebWorker functionality, without having to require users to build two separate scripts.

Currently there are workarounds, but they're hacky and based on the unsafe eval(): https://github.com/padolsey/operative#no-worker-via-blob-support

                          • "Allow zooming on all web content" option in Windows 10 Mobile

Windows Phone 8.1 had an option to "Allow zooming on all web content" under Settings > Ease of use. This allowed users to zoom/pinch-zoom in IE even on sites that explicitly specified a viewport with fixed min/max zoom sizes or user-scalable=no.

This option seems to have disappeared in Windows 10 Mobile.

Old Android/Browser, Android/Chrome, Android/Firefox, and most recently Android/Opera (just added in latest 4.3) all now have a "Force enable zoom" option in the browser settings. The odd one out of the major platforms is iOS/Safari (see https://openradar.appspot.com/radar?id=6058762490085376).

                            • Ability to "cast to device" from Microsoft Edge Browser

I hope this idea has already been considered and is in development. But if it isn't, please add to the list. Would love the ability to cast a video to device from within the Edge browser. This ability has been around with other operating systems for years.

                                    • Content Security Policy Level 2

CSP Level 2 bring with it the ability the whitelist inline script tags using the `script-src: nonce-<nonce>` directive.

This allows applications that rely on a small set of inline scripts to still reap the xss-fighting benefits of disallowing all other inline scripts and inline event handlers.

Array.prototype.includes for simpler and more readable checking for whether a value is contained in an Array object
