Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Support HTML5 drag and drop of files from Explorer

IE11 supports dragging files from the desktop/File Explorer to upload to for example OneDrive or other sites which use the HTML5 file upload API and support drag and drop.
This doesn't work in Edge. This is a quite serious regression.

      • ECMAScript Shared Memory and Atomics

        Specification: http://lars-t-hansen.github.io/ecmascript_sharedmem/shmem.html
        -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enables atomic operations on shared memory locations. Allows for the role of "threads" to be played by Web Workers in web browser environments.

        Use cases:
        - Support for threaded code in programs written in other languages that are translated to asm.js or plain JS or a combination of the two, notably C++ but also JVM and CIL bytecode, Halide, Clojure, Rust, and similar safe languages.

        - Support for hand-written JS or JS+asm.js that makes use of multiprocessing facilities for select tasks, such as image processing, asset management, or game AI.

          • UPDATE the WebDriver module - it is missing features and hasn't been updated since July 2015.

Please UPDATE your WebDriver module for Edge and support XPATH and other missing identifier functions, etc., so we can run the same scripts to test Edge in the same way we test other browsers. You say you are going to support it, but if you don't update it, that's not supporting it.

                  • background-clip: text

webkit currently supports the property background-clip: text that can be used to create awesome text filled in using background images, gradients, ect. Its an incredible feature with so many possibilities and I'd like to see supported in other browsers.

                        • [HTML] Form Validation and Custom Pattern Validation

These basic form validation types is still not supported on IE, even on Edge, whereas they are supported by competing browsers like Firefox and Chrome.

                          <input type='text' pattern='[input your validation here]' />

                          OR

                          <input type='text' required />

That will be very useful as we don't need to use server-side coding and even JS coding.

OGG, Theora and Vorbis are now supported in the Fall Creators Update by installing the Web Media Extension from the Microsoft Store: https://www.microsoft.com/store/apps/9n5tdp8vcmhs

Long-term, we expect to expand distribution of the Web Media Extension package to all Windows 10 devices so that these formats become a trusted and reliable part of the web platform available to developers.

                                • Remove element.runtimeStyle

element.runtimeStyle is non-standard, unnecessary and unintuitive.

                                  - It doesn't match any standard or any other browser.

                                  - We already have the `style` attribute on elements.

                                  - If I clone elements with any runtimeStyles set then the clones also get the runtimeStyles. But if I copy the elements using an `.innerHTML` (or similar) approach then the runtimeStyle is not copied.

                                      • Never allow malicious tabs/pages to create modal dialogs that cannot be dismissed

Edge should prevent a page from repeatedly popping up modal dialogs that block action on the current or other tabs. In IE 11, it is possible for a page to pop up a modal OS dialog window, and upon attempting to close that window, simply re-open it. I experienced this today with a rogue fake virus warning page, and had to kill the entire IE process to get rid of the dialog. Simply unacceptable from a security standpoint.

                                        • Support propery 'selectionDirection' for input and textarea

                                          http://dev.w3.org/html5/spec-preview/textFieldSelection.html

I used to use the el.createTextSelection method to determine the selection direction in IE11. However, inputs and textareas no longer expose this method, while still the el.selectionDirection = undefined.
We don't have any way to determine selectionDirection now.
