I just wrote a pull request to KaTeX, the math rendering library for Khan Academy. The pull request depends on mask. Details at http://copyasmarkup.com/bug/edgeproblems.html.
Since Microsoft wants to do better in the education market, you should do this.
Guys, what's the deal here? CSS Masking is a no-brainer. Up the priority.

Masks are supported in both Firefox and Safari
You have to add this to the next release.

This should be prioritized regardless of current usage; this tech is very risky to use and hard to polyfill without good support across browsers, and currently IE/Edge is the only holdout. http://caniuse.com/#search=mask
We need this soon
I use image masks with SVG extensively for mobile Safari and Chrome. Not having these for IE on Windows 8.x and Windows Phone requires so much unnecessary hacking to create a similar user experience.
