Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Bring `gap` property to flexbox

As outlined in the linked issue, having the ability to use grid-gap on flexbox (which is soon to be renamed just "gap" by the CSS Working Group because "grid-gap" doesn't make sense when used on flexbox) solves a major pain point that developers are facing.

See the issue for more details:

  2. Allow SendKeys to an <input type="file"> for file uploading

Using the WebDriver for Edge, and trying to use SendKeys to affect an <input type="file">, we get an error message that the element isn't focusable.

This is something that works in other browsers. It's the simplest way to upload a file in Selenium since WebDriver can't interact with a file dialog on the desktop.

This has been reported as an issue before:

    https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/platform/issues/7194303/

...but the only response has been "fixed internally" a year ago, which doesn't help those of us who don't work for Microsoft.

If Edge is important to Microsoft, then you'll want web sites to work with it.…

  3. Microsoft edge for Mac.

    Hei :)

  4. Log a message when a site is only supporting TLS 1.0 or 1.1

Migrated from Edge Bug report: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/platform/issues/21312153/
    ________________________________________________________

It would be nice if Edge DevTools could log a message for sites that are running on TLS 1.0 or 1.1.

As we get closer to disabling TLS 1.0 and 1.1, we should log a message to the console for sites that do not speak TLS 1.2 (or 1.3), and link to a useful resource, perhaps https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2018/10/15/modernizing-tls-edge-ie11/, and better docs in the future as we have them.

We just landed a similar thing in Firefox Nightly, see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1512505, the message we ended up with was: "This site uses a deprecated version…

  6. I am so sorry! Project Spartan, with browser-based games will not work.

I did not find the option in the video settings SLI - or another setting for working with hybrid processors. I am so sorry! Project Spartan, with browser-based games will not work.

  9. Chromium, please ensure LocalLinks are supported

Browsers like Firefox and Chrome think it is a security vulnerability to support linking to LocalLinks (i.e. file://COMPUTER_NAME/FILESHARE/FILE.pdf"). Very short sighted for corporate environments that will have a ton of legacy applications that still link to local network resources via the file:// scheme.

  12. ResizeObserver

A implementation of the ResizeObserver API would be nice.

    Thanks!

  13. lazyLoad

Currently, LazyLoad ( https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/dn369270(v=vs.94) ) is implemented in IE and Edge, see support: https://caniuse.com/#feat=lazyload

However there is interest in standardization to enable developers lazy-loading images/iframes and other embedded content (and the proposed lazyLoad's attribute values differ from that of current Edge/IE implementation):

  14. Support the `inert` attribute

Trapping focus in modal dialogs or preventing focus in background layers in modern web applications is extremely difficult and error-prone. Developers either have to walk the DOM and disable every focusable control with tabindex="-1" and `aria-hidden="true"` on a parent element, or do some tricky JavaScript to maintain focus inside of an element. Many developers get this wrong or they don't do it at all, creating horribly inaccessible experiences for keyboard and screen reader users.

The inert attribute currently being explored in the WICG solves this problem by providing a mechanism to disable entire subtrees in HTML. By setting `inert` on…

  15. RTC Data Channels

Data channels allow a web application to send and receive generic application data peer-to-peer.

This feature request is specifically about the *data channel* component of the WebRTC specification. This is separate from Object RTC and WebRTC 1.0 feature requests because the Platform Status site breaks out data channels separately.

    RTC Data Channels:

  16. add shortcuts for highlight, pen and eraser when adding notes.

it should be able to add shortcuts for highlight, pen and eraser when adding notes so it will be a lot easier to use and quicker, because taking notes need to be quick.

  18. Vertical bookmarks bar

My laptop and my desktop both are widescreen. I have more screen real estate at either side of the screen. To take advantage of that, it would be great to have a vertical bookmarks bar instead of horizontal.

  19. Spread operator for object literals

This feature is currently Stage 3 and is implemented by Firefox stable, Chrome stable, Safari Preview, and Node stable.

This is really useful for shallow cloning objects:

    let objClone = { ...obj };

  20. include browser version in user agent string

Microsoft Edge on windows does not include the version of the browser but only the version of layout engine:

    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/64.0.3282.140 Safari/537.36 Edge/18.17763

The version should be 44.17763.1.0, since 18.17763 is the version of layout engine

    I suggest something like:

    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/64.0.3282.140 Safari/537.36 Edge/44.17763.1.0 (EdgeHTML 18.17763)
