Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

  1. Allow (aind incentivize) older Windows to run secure IE versions

We understand you don't support older Windows versions. But the myriad of compromised machines due to old IE versions running on them hurts the internet as a whole - including your customers on newer Windows versions. It may be impossible to run the latest IE with all bells and whistles on an old OS, but maybe one just with a core feature set (and the security patches) would help patching the leaks until those systems get replaced.

  2. Modularity and integration

The idea si that. For example, we have a runtime environment.
Any JS or other script engine in system registers in this server.
Any app which needs JS engine can query the server for a list of engines which support some feature. Then the server gives the app list of engines. Then the app instantiates a class which implements standartized interface for interaction between JS or other engine and an app. Then the app can use this standartized interface to execute code, inject functions implemented by app into js instance....

For example we have firefox and chrome and ie installed in…

  5. Wrong inheritance with SVG's fill-opacity

In IE11, if the path element of SVG has "fill-opacity" and the element is using a marker, the opacity would be inherited by marker (although marker element is NOT the child of path).

  6. IE performance: TryCatchWithErrors and LayerMovement Test

On this test, http://jsbin.com/buruseri/, IE11 performs poorly compared to other browsers especially in TryCatch and LayerMovement stress tests.

Note: The result may vary on each run but the results shown below give you a general idea about the difference in performance on same PC.

Time taken to accomplish this test by various browsers is as follow:

    Results:

    Safari 5.1.2

    Try/Catch with errors — 8
    Layer movement — 5
    Random number engine — 6
    Math engine — 16
    DOM speed — 8
    Array functions — 3
    String functions — 3
    Ajax declaration — 3

    Total Duration 52 ms

  7. Have the tools take focus on the first click

When I have the tools open, but I'm interacting with another window, it takes two click on the developer tool's header before it will do anything.

So if I want to move the F12 tools and I'm currently interacting with a tab in IE (not the tools), I have to click once on the header of the F12 tools and then click again before it will let me drag it around.

  9. Ask for SSL certificate only once per request cycle.

When accessing a REST interface over https using a client cert, IE will ask for the certificate multiple times during the first request cycle if multiple requests are done. After the first request however, the browser will remember which cert to use.

  10. Remember what I had selected in the DOM for a limited time waiting for asynchronous DOM updates

When I debug a page that loads most of the content async, I would like a way to keep the selected DOM element until the async request is loading. This means that I don't have to traverse the tree every time to find the element I'm currently working on.

  11. Runtime error reporting: ErrorEvent.

Unhandled exceptions trigger the 'window.onerror' callback (or 'self.onerror' inside Workers) for centralized handling.

  12. Show syntax errors in debugger

This feature would expose syntax errors to a developer who has a file open in the F12 debugger.

    Proposed Design
    - If a JavaScript file containing syntax errors is opened in the debugger the syntax error will have a red squiggle and there will be a warning glyph in the gutter

  14. Edit and Continue

This feature would add the ability to edit JavaScript code when stopped in the debugger then to continue (or step) and execute the modified code.

    Proposed Design
    - Will have a number of limitations (e.g. not applicable to eval code)
    - Will not modify the state of the DOM/Objects/Closures etc.

We’ve started work on edit and continue in the F12 debugger. It’s going to take us a while as it’s a complex feature with many moving parts. The first part we’ll tackle is applying changes when you’re not at a breakpoint. So you could do something such as editing an event listener then trigger the event again. No dates for when, or if, we’ll be able to deliver it.

  15. XHR Replay

This feature allows users to replay previosly made XHR requests.

    Proposed Design
    - Provide a replay button to enter "Edit request mode"
    - Provide a context menu option on captured XHR requests to enter "Edit request mode"
    - Provide a "Edit request mode" where users can modify and re-send previously made XHR requests

  16. Ruler tool

This feature would add a ruler tool to the DOM Explorer which would be used to draw an arbitrary ruler on the page to measure the distance between two points.

    Proposed Design
    - New command on the DOM Explorer
    - Only one ruler can be drawn on the page at a time
    - Activating the command clears the previous ruler from the page and sets the mouse to draw mode where the first click places the first point and then draws a line to the current mouse pointer location. While moving the mouse cursor, a label should be drawn next…

  17. Advanced filtering in network inspector

    Proposed Design
    - Provide input box inside the type filter menu
    - Allow users to type a subset of the URL to filter the captured network traffic
    - Allow users to enter a key:value pair combination to filter the captured network traffic. The following are possible keys to be supported
    - CookieDomain
    - CookieName
    - CookieValue
    - Domain
    - HasResponseHeader
    - IsCacheHit
    - MimeType
    - Status

  18. Highlight find matches in DOM Explorer

This feature would improve the find experience in the DOM Explorer to highlight the matching string in the DOM Tree.

    Proposed Design
    - Find in the DOM Explorer highlights string match by highlighting the background of the text in blue (to match the debugger)
    - Highlight find matches in the DOM Explorer gutting with a blue glyph (to match the debugger)
    - Change the DOM Explorer to highlight as you type
    - Enter, F3 and Shift + F3 to continue to execute and navigate search matches
    - Add a progress indicator while executing a find operation

  19. Locals in Async callstacks

This feature would add the ability to view locals when changing the debugger context to an async frame.

    Proposed Design
    - The content would be read only (more like a snapshot)
    - The content would only include to items on the stack for that frame (not all globals)

  20. Display AppCache results in network inspector

This feature raises the visibility of requests that hit the AppCache by explicitly calling them out as AppCache hits.

    Proposed Design
    - Cache hits will be tag as "coming from AppCache" in the received column
    - The body of responses coming from the cache will be tag as "coming from AppCache" in the response body tab
