Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

      • RFC5861 - HTTP Cache-Control Extensions for Stale Content

        Directly from the RFC:

The stale-while-revalidate HTTP Cache-Control extension allows a cache to immediately return a stale response while it revalidates it in the background, thereby hiding latency (both in the network and on the server) from clients.

The stale-if-error HTTP Cache-Control extension allows a cache to return a stale response when an error -- e.g., a 500 Internal Server Error, a network segment, or DNS failure -- is encountered, rather than returning a "hard" error. This improves availability.

        http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5861

        Implementation in Chrome: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=348877
        Support in Fastly: http://www.fastly.com/blog/stale-while-revalidate/

        • Shadow DOM (unprefixed)

Enables DOM tree encapsulation. Without it, widgets may inadvertently break pages by using conflicting CSS selectors, class or id names, or JavaScript variables.

          • Enable "macros" or tools to playback bug reproduction steps that can be saved, shared and perhaps even extended with custom code.

Are you familiar with the popular POSTMAN Chrome extension? It's a super simple tool for defining and saving HTTP requests for playback. While that's nice in itself, what about taking things much further by allowing developers to create 'macros' or custom scripts to run in IE dev tools to help automate things like test cases, bug reproduction steps or more esoteric things like scripts to collect diagnostic information from (nontechnical) clients.
It would be nice to have a super-simple way to create scripts to automate tasks *specific* to developer scenarios. (Without the overhead of custom browser extensions and such.)

              • Support PNG, GIF & SVG cursors and other cursor enhancements

Add support for more formats than just the CUR and ANI file formats in the CSS cursor property. PNG, SVG and GIF support would be good.

Also, consider supporting the zoom-in/out and grab/grabbing properties, in addition to updating the browser-specific cursors like no-drop, all-scroll, col/row-resize, alias, cell, copy and context-menu cursors, as they look small/jagged, old and weird on my high DPI screen.

                • Better memory management

Improving memory management would prevent IE from blowing through all available graphic memory. Often, when using a high number of tabs (common in development), IE will overload the available graphics memory (never RAM), and elements will start disappearing from web pages or failing to load altogether.

This needs to be tweaked so that it stops happening - it doesn't seem to be an issue for any other browser.

                        • Provide actionable feedback

Currently, the F12 provides a lot of information, but very little "actionable" feedback for developers. Tools like YSlow work on a defined set of rules and provide feedback. It would be extremely useful If the data collected from network, profiler and UI responsiveness tools can be combined into an actionable report for developers.

Pnacl is fast! (10 times faster than js, 66% faster than asm.js)
                            Pnacl is portable! (LLVM)

                              • Implement <table sortable>

It is a common use case with data tables that one would like to sort the data, to order by a particular column (or multiple columns.)

Currently this must be done via JavaScript, but HTML5.1 has the `sortable` attribute for <table> [1] and the `sorted` attribute for <th> [2]

ServiceWorkers (formerly Navigation Controllers) are a new system that provides event-driven scripts that run independent of web pages. They are similar to SharedWorkers except that their lifetime is different and they have access to domain-wide events such as network fetches.

                                      • <datalist> size and style

                                        Hi,

I'm creating a contact form and I was using the <select> tag and I discovered the <datalist> tag and I think it's very useful, because it's dynamic (you can write and have some options at the same time).
