Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. headless browser for testing

It would be great if IE could be started as a headless browser (like PhantomJS) for running unit tests, taking screenshots, measuring load time, etc without having a browser window pop up. Running automated tests on IE often fails because the browser either fails to start up or shut down properly. With a headless browser multiple browser instances can be run in parallel without taking up screen space.

    • Automatic SSL certificate selection based on URL

Google Chrome has a group policy "AutoSelectCertificateForUrls". IE could offer a similar functionality to say "this certificate is for these URLs", that is a list of URLs to be maintained per certificate. Or map URL patterns to certificates based on their attributes, e.g. Issuer or FriendlyName. The IE then automatically selects the right certificate and the user is freed from the decision, which certificate to choose, especially if he has more than one from the same Root CA. The certificate selection dialog is then only needed if the same URL is configured for more than one certificate or no URLs…

      • F12 window "roll-up" and "roll-down"

Sometimes I need to debug issues in IE on client machines that have limited screen resolution such that switching between F12 tools and IE tab(s) is painful. I find this to be particularly true among clients using ultra books and tablets with less than 1080 vertical pixels. I realize the F12 tools already dock/undock, minimize and are themselves resizable but that only goes so far on such small screens. (Note: I’m referring specifically to cases where issues are not reproducible on development machines and thus the emulation options, as great as they are, wouldn’t help here.)

        I'd love to see…

        • Web MIDI API

Defines an API supporting the MIDI protocol, enabling web applications to enumerate and select MIDI input and output devices on the client system and send and receive MIDI messages.

          • HTML/CSS/JS 'sandbox' page integrated into tooling experience

Add an additional HTML/CSS/JS 'sandbox' page tightly integrated into the F12 tooling experience *loosely* similar to online tools like jsfiddle.net (et al) to allow developers to discover platform facets and experiment.

This could be similar in essence to firing up the F12 tools on 'about:blank' but with (1) better markup editing options, (2) the ability to open new tabs in this mode just one-click away and (3) it should always loudly play "whip my hair' by Willow Smith when activated.

            • Code collapsing in debugger

Allow me to collapse {}-blocks in debugger, for example functions. Add a button or shortcut to quickly collapse all blocks on the highest level, so I can get an easy overview over the functions in one js file.

                • Ability to filter profiler data by "my code only"

Much like in the debugger, a "my code only" option in the profiler tab would be very handy for filtering out code that I can easily change.

                    • Improve IE Certificate Handling

Visiting web page that require certificate based authentication and authorization pop up window with currently installed certificates, showing you the available and valid certificates. This is ok. But if you have to renew a certificate (because of expiration policy) and install the new one (having the old and the new installed at the same time and certificate store) it will not show as available to authenticate with. I guess there is some grouping happening and taking the first certificate or something similar.
The expected behavior is to show the newly installed certificate even if the old is still installed.

                      • Copy disabled properties in the CSS pane as commented out

When we untick a property in a CSS rule, the changes pane show it with a reddish background, so it's aware of the change, the proposal is that when we select the Copy option, the property is copied with /* .. */ so that we can keep track better all the changes as we will need to test again in other browsers.

                        • W3C Manifest support

Add support for the new W3C manifest specification for pinned apps as well as for Windows store applications.

The spec allows for vendor extensions which can be used for things missing in the Level 1 of the spec. A lot of things have already been planned for Level 2 so it would be great if the MS team could participate in the discussions

                          • Get Rid of Black Title Bar

When I hit F12 to open developer tools I frequently lose the title bar when trying to move the window. I almost always click on the top navbar (also same color black). I use visual studio and use the dark theme and this windows just gets lost inside of it.

I suggest changing the title bar to use the standard windows title bar (just like the IE window).

I don't get the rationale for changing the title bar color to a custom color.

                            • F12 Support for web browser and web view controls

Currently there are no production tools to debug web browser (.NET) or web view (Store App) applications. It is nightmare to identify JavaScript memory leaks and sometimes hang and crash as well. Ability to troubleshoot them (post mortem analysis) would go long way.

                              • Unprefix and support all @viewport properties

CSS Device Adaption (http://dev.w3.org/csswg/css-device-adapt) is partially supported through the @-ms-viewport rule, however the width and height property are the only ones supported. It would be nice if the zoom and orientation properties were supported, too (in addition to the rest of the spec), so that we'd get a real replacement for the non-standard viewport <meta> tag.

                                  • Debug for Edge on mobile/Xbox/RaspberryPi

Just like it happens for OSX/iOS, where attaching a device via USB or connecting via wifi allows to use desktop safari to inspect mobile safari and webviews on the mobile. All other browsers support this but Edge.

I know weinre was recently adapted to be usable on Edge mobile too but it's hardly a complete solution for serious development, lacking support for breakpoints, CSS pseudo-element.

Not to mention that I did encounter really strange behaviors of the DOM inspection panel based on when the weinre resources are loaded during JavaScript execution, something that is not acceptable to develop modern SPA…

                                    • all:initial

Supported by Firefox and Chrome and gives the developer more control over CSS cascading. This would be helpful when when writing components that get inserted in other environments.

Preferably both property: initial and all: initial would be supported.

Please open source the core components of Internet Explorer (Trident & Chakra). Microsoft in a position to do some serious good in the world, please help move the web forward together as a team – you don't have to do this alone.
