Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. sendMessage for extensions

When there are more than one extension have been loaded, the message will be send to all the extensions and the response will be chaos. Is is very essential to have the function that sending a single message to specific extension rather than to different extensions.
Google Chrome can avoid by chrome.runtime.sendMessage

      • Favorites Bar resize

I would like to use MS Edge but the favorites is not nearly as user friendly as the similar feature on Firefox. I can't view what I've opened and have favorites stay open. The favorites is too wide and cuts down on viewable area of opened site. I want Favorites bar to stay on screen and be there the next time Edge is opened.

        • Support TLS 1.3 with 1-RTT

TLS 1.3, the next version of security protocol for private and authenticated communication, is in the final phase of specification.
Cloudflare already supports it, Chrome 56 plans to support it January 2017 and Firefox in March 2017.
Edge should not stay behind and support TLS 1.3 with 1-RTT as well, ideally in the upcoming Creator's Update already.

            • dashlane support

Dashlane claims edge does not support a certain feature to enable them to write a plugin:
              https://csdashlane.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/202699161-Request-Dashlane-on-a-Platform-or-Browser

Please do whatever is needed to get dashlane working on edge, it's really in excusable to not have such a popular app supported. I would then use edge immediately, thank you

                • Support browser_url_overrides to allow customized net tab page, etc. (since users can't set their own choice of new tab page...)

Edge currently offers very few options for controlling the new tab experience, and the ones it does have are... not popular, judging by the Windows Insider feedback. Allowing extensions to override things like New Tab page would simultaneously address this concern and allow more Chrome extensions to be ported, making Edge a much nicer browser to use.

                    • Enable inline installation from the Store

Inline (one-click) installation is a Good Thing for many use cases for web extensions: it improves the user experience. Two other browser developers have worked out how to handle this in a secure way.

A call to a builtin js function browser.webstore.install() that must be in the context of a user-generated gesture would be ideal.

                      • A Web Extension should be able to uninstall itself: implement .management.uninstallSelf

The browser.management.uninstallSelf() function in js makes it possible for extensions to remove themselves when circumstances require. The fewer extensions installed, the smaller the attack surface on a browser.

Combined with one-click (inline) installation, this makes possible some use cases for temporarily installed extensions.

                        • Multiple Tab Selection

Would it be possible to implement the simultaneous selection of multiple consecutive tabs using the Shift or Ctrl Keys? I find it useful whenever I want to handle a selection of tabs at once - whether to move them to a different window/screen or delete them via Ctrl+W.

In short, "it'd be cool if" we could hold Ctrl and left-click to add particular tabs to the selection AND/OR left-click on one tab, then Shift+LClick on another tab to add the two (AND any tab located between them) to the selection

When using edge, the overal feel is very laggy, making me switch back to chrome. When I move tabs, scroll, navigate between pages, the experience should feel smooth and not "snappy" as it is now.

Begin search when typing feature. Firefox has this. you simply start typing (without hitting CTRL +F) and begins search. Most useful when finding key info in articles / how-to's. Can be toggled on or off in settings

                                • Selectable items in history, favourites...

Right now you can only interact with an item one by one.
Say you go to your favourites and you want to drag multiple links inside one folder. You'll have to do this one item after another, instead it would be nice if you could select the desired options and then interact with all of them

                                  • Support VP9 video codec when not hardware-accelerated

Edge supports the WebM VP9 encoding in MSE but only when accelerated, or if the end-user modifies about:flags. This means that sites using WebM VP9 but not H.264 cannot rely on playback in Edge, as most computers do not yet have hardware VP9.

For sites like Wikipedia that avoid H.264 due to licensing policy, this leads to less efficient workarounds or lack of media usage. We would love to deploy Edge-compatible VP9 if it were usable. An opt-in API for JS would be acceptable.

                                    • IE drop down menu of the 20 internet sites I visit every day

Why was this removed ? I still use IE purely because I hate having to type in URL'S in Edge. IE crashes all the time and it is terrible, but I still use it instead of edge

Surely the replacement should be better than the original?

We should be able to call the API's from Edge using JavaScript

                                        • dev.modern.ie/tools/vms Win10 Stable VM only licensed for 2 days

The Windows 10 Stable VM (15.15063) is only good for two days before it expires, after which time it constantly shuts down with no notice. Can you update it to so that it has the full 90 days?
