Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

    • Hide Internet Explorer icons from the taskbar and the desktop

      Hello,

      When I do support for customers of my SaaS company, I see that many of them who are not tech-savvy cannot differentiate between one browser or another, let alone between IE and Edge. They do not have a preference for one of the two even though it makes a huge difference for us, web developers, when it comes to web standard or supported technologies.

      I understand IE must still be supported for a long time because of technologies that were removed in the first version of Edge, but would it be possible, for the next big update, to "hide"…

      • Edge caching could be improved in error cases

        I'm a developer on Azure CDN. When testing out some scenarios on our side, we noticed a difference in behavior between how Chrome browser and Edge browser work for caching some bad responses. In our CDN, if we detect that the eTag on an 'If-None-Match' request header is for a 'malformed eTag' (one with no quotes), such as If-None-Match: 64988f77337209c5a7157a016c456d02, we return a 400 response.

        On chrome, the workflow goes like this:
        Download page, get 200, everything fine.
        Refresh page, browser sends If-None-Match with bad eTag, we detect this and send 400 to browser. Chrome detects this issue, and next…

          • RegExp Lookbehind Assertions

            Lookbehind assertions are now part of the ECMAScript specification. Google's V8 has had an implementation of it for a while now.

              • Option to disable auto-disabling of unsigned extensions

                There are plugins I have either written or ported from chrome myself, which I have no intention of submitting to the store either because I intend them for my own personal use or don't own the rights to redistribute them.

                Edge, however, wants to make life difficult for me, by automatically disabling these plugins every time I start the browser, forcing me to manually re-enable them.

                I would very much appreciate an option somewhere, perhaps in about:flags, to disable this unwanted and unwelcome behavior. You don't need to overstep your bounds when it comes to trying to protect me; I'm…

                • Asynchronous Clipboard API

                  The clipboard spec now has an asynchronous API [2] which is significantly more ergonomic than past clipboard APIs – it avoids various issues that the old document.execCommand("copy") approach had, and is much easier to use:

                  navigator.clipboard.writeText("hello world").then(...);

                  IE 9/10/11 shipped an unstandardized API for copying text or URLs to the clipboard. Edge shipped an older version of the draft standard clipboard/editing-spec-based-API [1], but it has numerous bugs and inconsistencies [2] that even *make it impossible to tell if the attempted copy action has succeeded*. Existing bugs aren't seeing attention, and it seems likely to me that there are more undiscovered…

                  • Support the `inert` attribute

                    Trapping focus in modal dialogs or preventing focus in background layers in modern web applications is extremely difficult and error-prone. Developers either have to walk the DOM and disable every focusable control with tabindex="-1" and `aria-hidden="true"` on a parent element, or do some tricky JavaScript to maintain focus inside of an element. Many developers get this wrong or they don't do it at all, creating horribly inaccessible experiences for keyboard and screen reader users.

                    The inert attribute currently being explored in the WICG solves this problem by providing a mechanism to disable entire subtrees in HTML. By setting `inert` on…

                    • view frame source

                      please add view frame source, reload and reload frame in the right click popup menu, why do developers have to ask for elementary things to be implemented when they already exist for years in Chrome and FF ? I want to try Edge only because it is faster but every time I do I just rush back to Chrome, please provide the same developer freedom as Chrome has before claiming that Edge is better, speed alone will not cut it, every time I am in Edge I feel like my hands are in handcuffs.

                      • It's really hard to improve my site's performance in Edge without flame graphs

                        The performance tools in Firefox and Chrome both have flame graphs and improving performance there is really easy. Our site is an order of magnitude slower in Edge but we have no idea why because the performance panel just says the time is being taken up by JavaScript without telling us anything else.

                        I assume this is already on your roadmap because I have no idea how developers at Microsoft are able to improve the performance of their web apps in Edge otherwise. Consider this a strong vote for this feature. When this is implemented, +1000 points for using an…

                                • unsupported pseudo class renders CSS useless

                                  unsupported pseudo class renders CSS useless
                                  When MS Edge does not support a pseudo class (e.g. :focus-within), it ignores other grouped selectors such as:

                                  #menu:focus-within, /* remove this to make it work in Edge */
                                  button[aria-expanded="true"] ~ #menu {
                                  -webkit-transform: translateX(0);
                                  transform: translateX(0);
                                  }

                                  Is this the correct behavior?

                                  Please see this demonstration:

                                    https://www.w3schools.com/jsref/met_number_stepdown.asp

                                    These are currently not supported by Edge.

                                    They work fine for range or date input, but someone just missed the most natural use of these methods for number input.

                                    • RegExp Named Capture Groups

                                      The proposal is in Stage 4, so it will be included in next ECMAScript release. Chrome and Safari have implemented this feature for regular expression. Named groups make regex easier to read when there are many groups.

                                      See: https://github.com/tc39/proposal-regexp-named-groups

                                      • Hide download dialog box

                                        There should be a way to minimize or hide the download dialog box. If the download takes some time the dialog box prevents interactions with some elements in a webpage.

                                        • color

                                          Enable the live color picker, it's frustrating to have to write the RGB code for each color.
