Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  3. Detect mobile-web-app-capable in metadata and provide app-like experience.

When <meta name="mobile-web-app-capable" content="yes"> is on the page, give the user cues that the site can be saved as an app. When opened as an app, provide minimal or no chrome to the user, and make any other web-app-specific UI/behavior changes.

  4. Errors/messages that are repeated group under a single badge (like Chrome)

SImilar to Chrome, when there are repeated errors/logs consolidate them on a single line with a badge indicating # of repeats. The issue arises when the same error may appear hundreds of times (ex. testing mouse events) and it's a pain to have to scroll through the duplicates...

  6. Improve support for editing files locally

I often have problems viewing complex documents locally in IE. They work perfectly when uploaded to a server, but for some reason locally IE doesn't see my css @import rules, or doesn't register certain scripts for inexplicable reasons, or various other issues like that. Websites should render locally exactly as they do server side wherever possible. Obviously I don't expect things like PHP code to work, but anything that can work, should.

  7. Make IE handle favicon like other browsers - any changes are reflected immediately

I don't what it is about IE but look out if you change the favicon for your site. I think IE caches the original one and getting it to recognize the new is a major pain.

  9. Allow simultaneous, stand-alone installations of different versions of IE (8/9/10/11/etc) on the one desktop

Because we all know emulation only goes so far, implement and allow stand-alone installations of IE.

This would allow side by side testing/debugging of functionality across different versions of IE straight on the developer's machine.

  11. Line numbers in console

This feature would show the source location (line & column) of a message logged via console.*.

    Proposed design
    - Same look and feel as other messages that have source information
    - Applicable to console (info, warn, error, assert, log, dir, dirxml, time/timeEnd)

  12. Enable iframes to choose a document mode independant of the document mode of the page that is hosting the iframe

We develop a large browser based financial accounting application. We are currently migrating our application from IE5 quirks mode to edge mode.

Customers can integrate the UI of our application into other web based applications. Our app is running inside of iframes in many other applications (for example, ERP software). When we now migrate to edge mode, all those integrations will break, because the document mode of our iframe is determined by the other applications that integrate our UI.

We need the possibility to migrate our application to edge mode without breaking all those other applications that integrate our UI.

  13. Keyboard shortcuts to switch between Document Modes in IE without entering F12 developer tools

It takes too long to switch between Document Modes in IE11, please introduce keyboard shortcut for power users to switch between document modes without having to enter F12 developer tools always e.g. CTRL+SPACE+(X) etc

  14. Support certificate validation using DANE (RFC 6698)

DNS-based Authentication of Named Entities (DANE) complements and sometimes replace the current trust model for certificates. Since it is based on the hierachical DNSSEC system, it doesn't have the flaw of having numerous (and sometimes a bit untrustworthy) certificate authorities all able to issue certificates for any domain. By making CAs unnecessay for domain-only certificates, it would shift their market to providing more reliable validation of additional information, such as who is the owner of the domain.

  16. Support frames in the developer tools

The F12 tools currently don't work well with frames.

We are already working on a version of our application that does not use frames any more. However, we will have to support existing releases of our software that use frames for at least a year or longer. Beeing unable to use F12 tools in IE11 with our old releases is really annoying and requires us to use VMs with IE10 to diagnose issues.

  18. Animation debbuger

Provide a timeline like in Flash or Expression that allow me to verify CSS animations, how they work on current page, etc. I just wan't to enable some CSS that start animation, pause animation, check current CSS values, and resume

  19. Simulation for older ie versions for testing purposes

It would be great for developers and designers to check for compatibility issues in older ie versions via some extension.
It can be developed much like webdeveloper tools in mozilla.

  20. Emmet for "Edit as HTML" in Dev Tools

While editing as HTML in the Elements tab, I would like to have Emmet support for faster HTML typing. It would be specifically very helpful in testing environment for the speed.
