Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Hide Internet Explorer icons from the taskbar and the desktop

    Hello,

    When I do support for customers of my SaaS company, I see that many of them who are not tech-savvy cannot differentiate between one browser or another, let alone between IE and Edge. They do not have a preference for one of the two even though it makes a huge difference for us, web developers, when it comes to web standard or supported technologies.

    I understand IE must still be supported for a long time because of technologies that were removed in the first version of Edge, but would it be possible, for the next big update, to "hide"…

    • Edge caching could be improved in error cases

      I'm a developer on Azure CDN. When testing out some scenarios on our side, we noticed a difference in behavior between how Chrome browser and Edge browser work for caching some bad responses. In our CDN, if we detect that the eTag on an 'If-None-Match' request header is for a 'malformed eTag' (one with no quotes), such as If-None-Match: 64988f77337209c5a7157a016c456d02, we return a 400 response.

      On chrome, the workflow goes like this:
      Download page, get 200, everything fine.
      Refresh page, browser sends If-None-Match with bad eTag, we detect this and send 400 to browser. Chrome detects this issue, and next…

            • RegExp Named Capture Groups

              The proposal is in Stage 4, so it will be included in next ECMAScript release. Chrome and Safari have implemented this feature for regular expression. Named groups make regex easier to read when there are many groups.

              See: https://github.com/tc39/proposal-regexp-named-groups

              • RegExp Lookbehind Assertions

                Lookbehind assertions are now part of the ECMAScript specification. Google's V8 has had an implementation of it for a while now.

                • Spread operator for object literals

                  This feature is currently Stage 3 and is implemented by Firefox stable, Chrome stable, Safari Preview, and Node stable.

                  This is really useful for shallow cloning objects:

                  let objClone = { ...obj };

                      • Implement CSS 'overscroll-behavior'

                        Consider implementing the new CSS overscroll-behavior property.

                        ## Specification
                        This feature specification is being incubated in WICG:
                        https://wicg.github.io/overscroll-behavior/

                        Additional background on this feature may be found here:
                        https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/769

                        ## Summary
                        CSS overscroll-behavior standardizes a supercharged version of "-ms-scroll-chaining". It allows developers to determine the browser's behavior once a scroller has reached its full extent.
                        The unused delta can be propagated to the parent causing scroll chaining, create a glow/bounce effect without chaining, or just get consumed silently. In particular when used on viewport defining element, it controls if overscroll can be used for navigation actions such as pull-to-refresh or swipe…

                          Per spec, Firefox only supports unified plan and Chrome has now aggressively started moving towards it. Chrome has started supporting both, will move to unified plan by default soon and expects to completely drop support for Plan B by 2019.

                          • Support Media Queries level 4 syntax improvements

                            CSS Media Quries Level 4 bring in a bunch of syntactic improvements. They make media queries much more readable and maintainable.

                            https://drafts.csswg.org/mediaqueries-4/#mq-syntax

                            Here's an example:

                            @media (min-width: 20em), not all and (min-height: 40em) {
                            @media not all and (pointer: none) {

                            }
                            }

                            After:

                            @media ((width >= 20em) or (height < 40em)) and (pointer) {

                            • Add an "IE Frame"-like Feature to Edge

                              As a web developer, the fact that ~10% of my users still use IE11, and that its features are frozen in time from 2011, is a huge pain point preventing me from using many new web platform features. (Even with a progressive enhancement mindset, there are times when the IE experience has to be pretty close to the experience in other browsers. In those cases, using the new features often doesn't make sense — it would just mean implementing the same functionality two different ways.)

                              So, this is a request to add a feature to Edge wherein:

                              1) If this feature…

                              • Add copy link address / url to right-click menu

                                This is a somewhat common daily use case for me. It is difficult for me to save every image and then host it to share it.

                                Also, using the console commands to parse and filter the img URL is also difficult. E.g.

                                > $$('img').forEach(function(element) { console.log(element.currentSrc);});

                                • Proxy API support for extensions

                                  Proxy extensions such as SwitchyOmega needs Proxy API.
                                  It's not convenient to use IE proxy settings for more than one proxy server.
                                  We need proxy API. Chrome and Firefox have already support it many years ago.

                                    • img decoding attribute

                                      https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/embedded-content.html#attr-img-decoding

                                      > Decoding of large images can block the main thread for hundreds of milliseconds or more, interrupting fluid animations and user interaction. Currently, there's no way for a web author to specify that they want an image to be decoded asynchronously, so there are scenarios where it is impossible to avoid UI stalls.

                                      Thus the new `decoding` attribute for the `img` element, with possible values:

                                      * `sync`: Indicates a preference to decode this image synchronously for atomic presentation with other content.

                                      * async: Indicates a preference to decode this image asynchronously to avoid delaying presentation of other content.

                                      *…

                                      • Only Allow AppCache over HTTPS

                                        AppCache should be removed from insecure contexts. Since AppCache allows offline and persistent access to an origin, this can be an XSS attack vector that can be exploited

                                        • Microsoft Edge DevTools Protocol:Browser setters and geters for WindowBounds, WindowState and AddressBar visibility.

                                          Methods should be added to set and get window bounds, state and address bar visibility.

                                          E.G. in chrome:
                                          Browser.setWindowState()
                                          Browser.getWindowState()
                                          Browser.setWindowBounds()
                                          Browser.getWindowBounds()
                                          and the command line argument --app="<address>"

                                          These allow us to make desktop applications using Edge and I feel this is pretty vital especially as a modern replacement for the IE COM API.
