Microsoft Edge Developer

Hi, are you a web developer or designer?

“No, I just want to share feedback on Microsoft Edge.”

Please use the Feedback Hub (requires Windows 10) to submit your feedback in the Microsoft Edge category. This site is for web developer and designer feedback only. Other feedback will be closed without action.

“Yes, I’m a web developer or designer with feedback for the Microsoft Edge platform.”

Great! This site is where the Microsoft Edge team collects feature requests from the web developer and designer community in the categories listed to the right. For bugs on existing features, please log an issue on the Issue Tracker.

Your feedback will help us with planning and to better understand how web developers and designers are using the platform. Top standards-based feature requests will also be copied over to status.microsoftedge.com, where you can track its development status.

For the most actionable feedback, please search and up vote for existing suggestions before submitting a new suggestion, and create a separate suggestion per idea. Note that off topic or inappropriate suggestions may be moderated. The Microsoft Edge team will use suggestions as an important input, but there are several additional factors that inform the final roadmap.

A note from our lawyers: Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft. See the Terms of Service for more information.

How can we improve the Microsoft Edge developer experience?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

    • Update word-wrap to overflow-wrap

overflow-wrap is the new name for word-wrap, and should be implemented to adjust to the standards.

      • Log XmlHttpRequests to the console

This feature would log every XHR based network request to the console.

        Proposed design:
        - Console message with the URL that is being requested
        - Link to view the request in the network tool
        - Link to the source location that triggered the XHR

        • Developer Tools -> Detecting leaked memory by pointing out disconnected nodes

I find the Memory debugging tool good, what I am missing is to be able to see disconnected nodes easily and what is keeping them alive.

For example, these nodes may appear in the DOM Explorer colored differently in the bottom of the node tree - or in a separate section.

Then I would like to be able to click such a disconnected node and immediately see the js variable and code that keeps it alive, instead of drilling through stack traces and GC root views.

            • Allow dom elements created on one window to be used in another (for popout windows)

IE is the only browser that doesn't allow a element created on one window to be added to another. This is useful when creating popout windows in a web application and not all frameworks allow you to specify the document with which to create the element with.

              • Debugging capabilities using the remote debugging protocol

Build upon the remote debugging protocol (https://developer.chrome.com/devtools/docs/debugger-protocol) to allow developers to use existing, familiar, developer tools.

Then continue to openly build debugging innovations on the web platform based on the protocol, collaborating with other browser vendors to make it moving between browsers an easier experience.

                • Scrolling tables

To those in the enterprise application world, tables are used extensively and can get both very tall and wide. Currently there is no easy way to make an HTML table scroll either way.

Long ago in Firefox 3 you could add :overflow:scroll" to tbody and it would scroll, but they removed support for that because it was not standard. Even that only supported vertical scrolling.

There are probably too many javascript toolkits to count that include their own version of a scrollable grid. Although those are very helpful, none which I know of support scrolling on tables without using "table-layout:fixed".…

                          • Allow data: / blob: URLs in iframe src

Currently IE is an only browser I know to block blob:/data: URLs as an iframe src. Since iframes do not provide any other way to set Content-Type, this disallows some interesting client-side scenarios such as iframed SVG preview.

                                    • Detect mobile-web-app-capable in metadata and provide app-like experience.

When <meta name="mobile-web-app-capable" content="yes"> is on the page, give the user cues that the site can be saved as an app. When opened as an app, provide minimal or no chrome to the user, and make any other web-app-specific UI/behavior changes.

                                      • Errors/messages that are repeated group under a single badge (like Chrome)

SImilar to Chrome, when there are repeated errors/logs consolidate them on a single line with a badge indicating # of repeats. The issue arises when the same error may appear hundreds of times (ex. testing mouse events) and it's a pain to have to scroll through the duplicates...
