Command Prompt / Console / Bash on Ubuntu on Windows

Shrouded in the mists of time, the Windows Console was created. For millenia, geeks and developers wrought their command-line tools but after a while, a great lacking was noticed. And so, legions of ever intrepid command-line mavens migrated to other shells and consoles, ’til but a stalwart few remained.

In Windows 10, with a deep rumbling, the ancient, weary, Windows Console heaved a great sigh and began to tremble. New features appeared, but slow was the (aparrent) progress.

But then, in early 2016, from under a rock evolved a group of new console dev’s. And then a PM. The journey to modernity had begun … again! WE’RE BACK! AGAIN!

  1. Allow to customize colors for a terminal

With the new 24-bit color options, it would be great to actually be able to use some of the new colors.

It's already well known that you can change colors in the registry to change the colors of the console.
According to this article, you can also change colors on a single shortcut (.lnk) https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20130527-00/?p=4253

Now it would be great to have a UI for changing colors.
The current UI only allows changes to Screen Text, Screen Background, Popup Text and Popup Background.

I would like to define the 16 original colors as another variant of those colors. For…

      A few notes here:

      1) The colors one can configure in the properties of a command-line app / shortcut are the default 16 colors that traditional Windows apps can request via the Console API, or which get displayed by the simplest VT sequences that specify a color index, rather than color values.
      2) We do not aim to modify the Windows Console API’s to enable richer color support. Instead, we recommend command-line app developers to emit VT sequences instead. This way they can request any and all of the 16M colors available when specifying a 24-bit RGB color values.
      3) We DO aim, to overhaul and improve the way that Console properties work, and have recently released an open-source tool to help you import entire iterm and other color schemes: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/commandline/2017/08/11/introducing-the-windows-console-colortool/

    • Indication of properties currently being edited

Currently when editing the properties of an conhost.exe process, I don't have a good indication of where I'm currently editing.

Something along the lines of "Currently editing regedit" or "Currently editing C:\temp\mypowershell.lnk"

As I can read, you are currently overhauling the settings (Indicated here: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/commandline/2017/08/11/introducing-the-windows-console-colortool/#comment-31446) but I just wanted to make sure that you remembered this.

        • Selecting text shouldn't pause program

Many people run into the unexpected behavior that accidentally selecting text on the console causes their program to pause when it tries to write to the output stream.

While text is selected, the console should continue to read from the output stream, and have some different way to provide stable text selection (freeze the scrollbar, or just render the text after the selection ended?).

Here's some other users who probably find the current behavior unintuitive:

          • Add "Set to default" to color tool

Since shortcut settings are opaque, it can be very annoying to keep multiple terminal programs in sync. It would be nice if we could set a console to the settings we have stored in Default with one-click / command.

            • Console

I know the windows command prompt is legacy, but it really deserves an upgrade. In all cases I avoid it like the a plague and that is just a shame. Take a look at Hyper by Guillermo Rauch, it is configurable, supports multiple windows and minimalist.. It easily could do more, but suffice to say it works better than ComEMU (which I used for a long time but is too complex) and the standard console.

Consoles are for developers, so give them the tools they need. I run multiple consoles in development environments, running servers and logs while the others…

                • Hairlines in background colour remain when highlighted area eased

Something I've been noticing recently is background-coloured vertical hairlines left behind when using a TrueType font, writing a text "button" using a coloured background when the screen is generally black and then writing plain text in the same location.
It's almost like the coloured background has been calculated 1 pixel wider than necessary to ensure adjacent cells touch, but the same rule doesn't apply for a black background.

I believe that Cortana needs better integration into the OS, not just with the command line, but also Powershell and WSL.

                    • Increase command line arguments size limit

Current limitation for Console/Terminal (or Windows Kernel?) is about 10.000 symbols for command line, while *unix shell allow about 32.768 (need be verified).
In some rare cases such length size is not enough, and execution of 10.000+ symbols command fails with an error 'The command line is too long'. E.g. that's why MESA builds for Windows using mingw-w64 are made on Linux and failed on Windows (see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?format=multiple&id=94072 ).
Would be nice to increase this limitation, so won't be needed to use Linux for tasks, which could be performed on Windows.

                        • Better buffer resizing

The new console resizing using the mouse is great.. for cmd.
But for other console apps it would be better to have greater control over that resizing.
The new 'Wrap text output on resize' locks the window width to the buffer width. It would be useful to also lock the window height to the buffer height.
Also it would useful to not allow the user to resize the buffer, leaving it under the control of the application.
And the 'Wrap text output on resize' option needs to be accessible via a Win32 api call.

                          • `color NN` should set the FG/BG color "defaults" for ANSI colors

Currently (as of Win Version 10.0.14393), the ANSI sequences "\x1b[m" == "\x1b[0m", "\x1b[39m", and "\x1b[49m" reset the respective color to the default color of the console determined at the time the console process was initiated. If the user changes the current console colors using the `color` command, that new color preference is unfortunately discarded when any of the reset sequences are encountered.

Up to this point, the usual practice of most Win32 applications, when implementing ANSI color, is to read the console attributes at the start of their execution, and use those values to "reset" the colors. So, if the…

Text editor like editing functions should be there, (like Ctrl+BackSpace or Ctrl+Delete to delete words to whitespaces, etc.) Currently we have to delete letter by letter. I know there is Ctrl+Home, Ctrl+End to delete whole sentence to left or to right, but it is inconvenient.
There should be ability to adjust the verical line spacing in cmd.

There should be functionality to display, create, edit text files natively in cmd.
It would be great addition so develpers can work with text files on the fly.

                                    • Drop Down Bash Console

Firs I want to say THANK YOU FOR BASH ON WINDOWS!!!!!!

On Linux there is a are a few tools like guake for a "Drop Down Terminal" for easy access and tab support. The only one I can find for windows no longer has support and I think it would add a lot of convenience.

                                      • char NULL (ascii 0) output is not correct

char NULL (ascii 0) output is not correct

                                        printf '\000A\000B'
output is spaceAspaceB, but it should be AB.

I don't oppose to the integrated precompiled debiancyness Unice, unice subsystem that perhaps outperforms /dev/wow | bench > /dev/null, however I think OSS would be impressed with native :0 xwin, I say YES to the Microsoft decisionmakers that suffers less from Finnish ways to leverage important innovations, so OSS repository/svn/git for all the magick needed such that Microsoft drivers would even be able to be replaced, renewed, OSS I vote for complete integration meaning sinks to pulse/jack/audio/hdmi magick etc.. and all misanthropic features that would perform better I suppose, that is, after they fixed the I/O schedular policies that P2P…
