Command Prompt / Console / Windows Subsystem for Linux

Shrouded in the mists of time, the Windows Console was created. For millenia, geeks and developers wrought their command-line tools but after a while, a great lacking was noticed. And so, legions of ever intrepid command-line mavens migrated to other shells and consoles, ’til but a stalwart few remained.

In Windows 10, with a deep rumbling, the ancient, weary, Windows Console heaved a great sigh and began to tremble. New features appeared, but slow was the (aparrent) progress.

But then, in early 2016, from under a rock evolved a group of new console dev’s. And then a PM. The journey to modernity had begun … again! WE’RE BACK! AGAIN!

  1. Libsixel support for CMD/Powershell/WSL

I would like native libsixel support as the only current way to run it is as per this comment https://github.com/Microsoft/WSL/issues/1099#issuecomment-248513013. If possible, this support would be for for all terminals. This would prove extremely useful in performing quick research without having to leave the terminal.

    • Support installing and fully uninstalling from CMD/Powershell

I use Windows for about 25 years now but I never used the Windows store. Never had a reason to. I don't want to install and uninstall WSL form Windows store.

I'd like to install it, or fullly uninstall WSL (Ubuntu in my case) directly form CLI. I assume I'm not the only one.

By "full uninstall" I mean to delete all the file system, including files that were created customly , like som .sh files in the user's directory.

      • Selecting text shouldn't pause program

Many people run into the unexpected behavior that accidentally selecting text on the console causes their program to pause when it tries to write to the output stream.

While text is selected, the console should continue to read from the output stream, and have some different way to provide stable text selection (freeze the scrollbar, or just render the text after the selection ended?).

Here's some other users who probably find the current behavior unintuitive:

        • Improve piping & interop syntax

Let's say you work on windows (cmd/powershell), and you want to pipe something to linux, do something there, and pipe something out. For example, copying to clipboard cowsaying all files/folders from C\Windows starting with 's'. (Yes. Very practical example)

Normally, you would use this syntax
          C:\Windows>dir | bash -c "grep '\ss'" | bash -c "cowsay" | clip

It would work, but it is rather verbose & it needs to have those quotation marks, which is annoying.

I have used a nice utility ($.exe from https://github.com/neosmart/RunInBash), which makes this look a bit better:
          C:\Windows>dir | $ grep '\ss' | $…

          • Double click to enter selection mode

Now the selection mode starts to work when you just click on a console window. Sometimes you don't want it, and it may cause losing of contents of the clipboard. It is better to use double click for entering this mode.

            • xterm modifyOtherKeys - ^1 C-1 Ctrl+1 Ctrl+number

Support the xterm "modifyOtherKeys" feature, so that combinations of Ctrl/Alt/Meta can be used with number keys. For example, Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2 ... Ctrl+9.

Currently the terminal only supports Shift+number and Alt+number.

              C-1: 1 (i.e. not different form a plain 1 keystroke)
              C-2: ^@
              C-3: ^[
              C-4: ^\
              C-5: ^]
              C-6: ^^
              C-7: ^_
              C-8: ^?
              C-9: 9 (i.e. plain 9)
              C-0: 0 (i.e. plain 0)

If "modifyOtherKeys" is set, then these keys would send:
              C-1: ^[[27;5;49~
              C-2: ^[[27;5;50~
              C-3: ^[[27;5;51~
              C-4: ^[[27;5;52~
              C-5: ^[[27;5;53~
              C-6: ^[[27;5;54~
              C-7: ^[[27;5;55~
              C-8: ^[[27;5;56~
              C-9: ^[[27;5;57~
              C-0: ^[[27;5;48~

Similar keystrokes apply for Ctrl+Alt+number and Ctrl+Shift+number,…

              • Please have Vim built-in with Windows Console

So instead of opening a new text editor window, it just opens with Vim inside the CLI.

                • Default terminal shortcut

Create a shortcut (like Ctrl+Alt+T in many Linux distributions to lauch the default console). Maybe when done in an Explorer window should it navigate to the folder?

                  • Shift+Tab / Backtab escape

iTerm (and presumably others) supports a ^[[Z~ escape sequence for Shift+Tab. I've been doing some work on PSReadLine to improve ANSI escape support, and this would be a really helpful addition for the completion commands.

                    • Create simple configuration files like bash_profile and bashrc, but for CMD

Powershell is a pain to use for non .NET developers, and having to play around with configuration via menus is very tedious.

                        • Add "Set to default" to color tool

Since shortcut settings are opaque, it can be very annoying to keep multiple terminal programs in sync. It would be nice if we could set a console to the settings we have stored in Default with one-click / command.

                          • Replace the titlebar colour into black. White titlebar is distracting to CLI contents.

The current white titlebar (when not using the optional theme color) is really distracting and just looks out-of-place on CLI.

I suggest that the console window should be like this: https://imgur.com/a/UQZS9

This is Hyper, a 3rd-party terminal app. An example of modern looking CLI that I think Windows deserve to have out-of-the-box. It is clean and way more focused to the CLI itself rather than the GUI chrome.

                            • Really need a visual bell for accessibility reasons

Implement an option to enable a visual bell and another to disable the audible bell. This would greatly improve accessibility of the console and provide a quieter option for the tab-centric autocompletionist.

                              • Console

I know the windows command prompt is legacy, but it really deserves an upgrade. In all cases I avoid it like the a plague and that is just a shame. Take a look at Hyper by Guillermo Rauch, it is configurable, supports multiple windows and minimalist.. It easily could do more, but suffice to say it works better than ComEMU (which I used for a long time but is too complex) and the standard console.

Consoles are for developers, so give them the tools they need. I run multiple consoles in development environments, running servers and logs while the others…

                                    • Hairlines in background colour remain when highlighted area eased

Something I've been noticing recently is background-coloured vertical hairlines left behind when using a TrueType font, writing a text "button" using a coloured background when the screen is generally black and then writing plain text in the same location.
It's almost like the coloured background has been calculated 1 pixel wider than necessary to ensure adjacent cells touch, but the same rule doesn't apply for a black background.

                                      • I would like to see better Cortana integration with the console

I believe that Cortana needs better integration into the OS, not just with the command line, but also Powershell and WSL.

                                        • Increase command line arguments size limit

Current limitation for Console/Terminal (or Windows Kernel?) is about 10.000 symbols for command line, while *unix shell allow about 32.768 (need be verified).
In some rare cases such length size is not enough, and execution of 10.000+ symbols command fails with an error 'The command line is too long'. E.g. that's why MESA builds for Windows using mingw-w64 are made on Linux and failed on Windows (see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?format=multiple&id=94072 ).
Would be nice to increase this limitation, so won't be needed to use Linux for tasks, which could be performed on Windows.
