Command Prompt / Console / Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

Greetings from the Windows Command-Line Teams, including the Windows Console and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) teams!

We’re hear to learn about the features you’d like to see in the Windows Console (the terminal app itself), Cmd and PowerShell shells, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) upon which several Linux distros now run!

Note: Please don’t file bugs & issues here: file issues on our GitHub repos instead:

Please DO post your asks, ideas, wants and needs for future features: We ARE listening, and we ARE grateful for your feedback!

  1. Add libusb support to WSL

Since previous one(https://wpdev.uservoice.com/forums/266908-command-prompt-console-bash-on-ubuntu-on-windo/suggestions/16759696-add-usb-device-support) was marked "complete", this one more clearly states support for libusb as in any usb device raw, rather than just storage mounting and serial pass-through.
My example need is Yubikey gpg-card.

    • Add libgl support to WSL

There are many development tools unable to be ported to Windows due to their proprietary nature and others that though not proprietary have no interest in porting to Windows. For me specifically, it's being able to utilize dev tools such as VSCode, Sublime Text, Draft, Javalin, Bootsnap, OSQuery, and/or FSQL without downloading a third party X server that only does partial implementation. Libgl is specifically required to get GUI apps to run and doesn't currently exist. Please implement libgl and create an API for driver makers to use to enable use of these and other GUI dev tools.

      • Add support for 32-bit ELF executables

A lot of tools written for Linux can be downloaded as 64-bit, but there are still a few that only 32-bit downloads are available for. I've tried using virtual machines, but that tends to not be feasibly in some projects.

        • To be able to open tabs would be great.

I am stuck using a MAC at work because the terminal is far superior. with Linux/MAC I can open multiple tabs in the terminal, with windows WSL I have to open a bunch of windows. Sometimes I will has 7 or 8 tabs open at once... Adding tabs to the command terminal would be an excellent upgrade. I work with a bunch of DevOps and TechOps people and the vast majority would rather be using windows, but because of the lack of features with the command box they are stuck using MAC's

            • Allow WSL root folder location to be in a separate EXT4 partition recognized by windows

The idea is basically allowing the user to actually play with the files in a GUI environment with all the added perks of an explorer window.

              • Open bash in current folder from context menu

I would love a right-click option in a folder to open the current folder in a WSL distro. right click to open in the folder C:\Users\account would open a terminal in /mnt/C/Users/account

Exposing bluetooth to the WSL is necessary to develop IoT without having ot fire up a Viertual Machine.

                  • Andoid Distro Support

I'm very happy about Ubuntu / SUSE / Fedora options for WSL. But isn't Android based on Linux as well? It would be AMAZING to be able to test/run Android apps using WSL, as other Linux apps are able to run GUIs in Windows in the current version.

                    • Backup/Restore/Share/Snapshot a WSL installation

Backup / Restore / Snapshot a WSL installation.

For development puproses it would be very nice to ba able to backup a WSL installtion and to resore it on the same or another(!) PC.

Provide a means of 'going back' (like a VMware snapshot) when a WSL installation became unstable, bloated, corrupt.

BTW is there a way to have more than one Ubuntu installations at the same time?

                      Best regards.

                        • Upgrading WSL to the new Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, and some comments & suggestions.

I've been using WSL on Windows 10 laptop for well over a year now, and have been relying on it so much for local development of my Linux work, that it's been months since I last booted into the Linux partition.

I know that if I'm doing any low-level work, I may have issues, but so far, my experience has been great. Whatever I write on WSL, as long as it passes my gtest unit test cases, I can be sure that it will also work on other Linuxen.

I've been using apt to install new packages, and Xenial Xerus…

                            • Map WSL process ID to Windows process ID

Currently there appears no clean way to get the corresponding Windows process ID of a running WSL process. I can inspect the PIDs of running processes in Windows taskmanager or with the tasklist command from bash on WSL as in:

                              oeffner@grove:~$ cmd.exe /c tasklist

But that does not guarantee unambiguous identification PIDs if more processes have the same name.

It would be great if the PID of a WSL process was available as an additional column for Windows TaskManager and the tasklist command.

It would also be great if it were possible under WSL to get the corresponding Windows PID…

I would like to be able to build the yocto project for embedded Linux natively which is possible currently. However I am unable to dd to /dev/sda to deploy it to the target because It is an external block device. Do we know if this will ever be supported?

                                • Add Posix ACL support to WSL and for drvfs mounts derive them from Windows ACL

Add Posix ACL support to WSL and for drvfs mounts derive them from Windows ACL. It is possible to map Posix ACLs to Windows ACLs with some limitations. That would greatly enhance interoperability between windows applications and wsl applications. Using metadata to save posix permissions on drvfs mounts greatly reduces interoperability, since windows applications are not aware of posix permissions saved as metadata.

                                  • Libsixel support for CMD/Powershell/WSL

I would like native libsixel support as the only current way to run it is as per this comment https://github.com/Microsoft/WSL/issues/1099#issuecomment-248513013. If possible, this support would be for for all terminals. This would prove extremely useful in performing quick research without having to leave the terminal.

                                    • /proc/sys/fs/file-max does not exist

I am attempting to run a bioinformatics pipeline using WSL. This pipeline relies on information within /proc/sys/fs/file-max.

On standard Linux distros, this file is a plain text buffer containing an integer. WSL does not appear to have this file.

[error] On machine: **omitted**, /proc/sys/fs/file-max does not exist.

Reproduce by running the following command on WSL and compare to a Linux system.

                                      $ cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max

                                      File does not exist.

A plain text buffer containing an integer should be present.

                                      • Have dev/shm actually use RAM instead of system drive

dev/shm appears to be using disk space as creating objects there decreases available space and IO speed is significantly limited.

                                        • Wrap a DLL as a .so

If you provided a wrapper for DLLs to expose them as Linux shared object files, WSL programs could call into them to execute functions that use Windows drivers.

The example I have in mind is that my Python code, running in WSL, could load one of these wrapped DLLs posing as a .so file, and execute code that makes CUDA calls running against the native OS drivers.
