Command Prompt / Console / Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

Greetings from the Windows Command-Line Teams, including the Windows Console and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) teams!

We’re hear to learn about the features you’d like to see in the Windows Console (the terminal app itself), Cmd and PowerShell shells, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) upon which several Linux distros now run!

Note: Please don’t file bugs & issues here: file issues on our GitHub repos instead:

Please DO post your asks, ideas, wants and needs for future features: We ARE listening, and we ARE grateful for your feedback!

    • Console window title: please replace "Administrator: " with something shorter or even remove it

Command prompts opened as administrator are indistinguishable in the task bar because of the long prefix "Administrator: " added to its title.
The `title` command changes only the part of the title that goes after this prefix. Please do something about it: shorten it to "Admin:", or even just "A", or a bomb emoji, or change the icon in the task bar and remove the prefix altogether, or add a setting for the user to choose, etc.

People go as far as modifying cmd.exe in a hex editor to get rid of this prefix:

      • Allow WSL root folder location to be in a separate EXT4 partition recognized by windows

The idea is basically allowing the user to actually play with the files in a GUI environment with all the added perks of an explorer window.

        • Making DrvFS fmask=111 usable

          (from https://github.com/Microsoft/WSL/issues/3267)

At the moment when using a git repo on DrvFS, all new files will be created as +x, which git detects and sets core.filemode=false. Enabling fmask=111 in drvfs options fixes this, but that breaks all .exe interop, since those need the +x bit too.

As mentioned in the WSL bug, this can be worked around by adding an explicit mount with the options in fstab, but those entries are not auto-mapped when invoking `bash.exe` or `wsl.exe` from windows, meaning either you need to manually mount without fmask any PATH entries and re-write the WSL-side mapped paths, or…

          • Add support for SFTP for cURL

In Windows 1803 you shipped cURL with Windows (yay!) but it doesn't support SFTP. It supports other secure transfers (https) but not SFTP. Please add support for SFTP in the cURL that ships with Windows.

              • make /d the default behavior for CD

Today when I work in CMD after each cd I type /d, isn't better to include it by default?

More and more fonts are OTF rather than TTF (e.g. nerdfonts.com)

                  • Kinect Support

I am currently working on a project that involves an Xbox Kinect with ROS (The Robot Operating System) and currently, the Linux console/subsystem doesn't have support for the Xbox Kinect. This feature would be highly appreciated.

                    • vsyscall problem

I'm not sure if the problem with emulating vsyscall as described in https://github.com/Microsoft/WSL/issues/1462 is now considered to be a feature of WSL. It seems it has been marked as such. The upshot is that many scientific Linux programs we use at work cannot run on WSL. Does anybody know what the status of this issue is or if it will be addressed?

                      • Upgrading WSL to the new Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, and some comments & suggestions.

I've been using WSL on Windows 10 laptop for well over a year now, and have been relying on it so much for local development of my Linux work, that it's been months since I last booted into the Linux partition.

I know that if I'm doing any low-level work, I may have issues, but so far, my experience has been great. Whatever I write on WSL, as long as it passes my gtest unit test cases, I can be sure that it will also work on other Linuxen.

I've been using apt to install new packages, and Xenial Xerus…

                        • I want to use a different locale for each terminal. Like LANG=C.

I want a way to switch the locale for each console. Like LANG=C. This will be easy to get more feedback and Issue from non-English speaking countries. I think.

                          • Easier way to reinstall WSL distros

Request: An easier way reinstall distros.
it was previously possible to do it with lxrun, but now with wslconfig it is more manual

When experimenting I break my installs a lot and want to get back to a clean start.
                            Previously i could run
                            lxrun /uninstall /full /y ; lxrun /install
Which would blow it away, and then put it back on.

But now according to the docs at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/wsl-config
                            You now run
                            wslconfig /unregister <DistributionName>
and then need to go back into the windows store and manually install it again.
An automated way to do it like we could…

                            • Support for DECAWM escape sequence

"CSI ? 7 l" or "CSI ? 7 h" (disables or enables auto-wrapping) is available since VT100 but it is still not supported by the Windows Console.

We are currently developing an internal log viewer tool, and it would be a lot easier if we wouldn't have to find a workaround which can be used instead of that escape sequence.

                              • Bidirectional text support

There are a few languages that can be written right-to-left (RTL), sometimes intermixing with the left-to-right pieces, like numbers or English words. It is crucial for Middle East countries to support this everywhere. Some Linux console programs, like Konsole or Mlterm already support it, but there is ongoing work everywhere else. It would be awesome if Microsoft will lead the way and help with adoption.

                                • Two accounts, one box --

I have administrator and personal accounts on my laptop. I installed ubuntu18.04 on the administrator account. There does not seem to be any way for the personal account to access the administrators ubuntu. (1) is it possible; (2) if not, can it be made so; (3) if it cannot, this would probably be a good idea (multiple account access to a single installation). If you think about it, this is the way "real" linux installations are.

                                  • A command to confirm that linux is running on WSL

There are many cases where it's useful to programmatically check whether linux is "regular" linux or WSL linus. E.g., in Python calling `sys.platform` just returns `linux`, not `linux-wsl` or something like this. It'd be helpful if there were a command line argument that could reliably confirm that the platform is WSL.

                                    • Open bash in current folder from context menu

I would love a right-click option in a folder to open the current folder in a WSL distro. right click to open in the folder C:\Users\account would open a terminal in /mnt/C/Users/account

                                      • Have dev/shm actually use RAM instead of system drive

dev/shm appears to be using disk space as creating objects there decreases available space and IO speed is significantly limited.

                                        • Block device support for embedded systems

I would like to be able to build the yocto project for embedded Linux natively which is possible currently. However I am unable to dd to /dev/sda to deploy it to the target because It is an external block device. Do we know if this will ever be supported?
