Greetings from the Windows Command-Line Teams, including the Windows Console and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) teams!

We’re hear to learn about the features you’d like to see in the Windows Console (the terminal app itself), Cmd and PowerShell shells, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) upon which several Linux distros now run!

Note: Please don’t file bugs & issues here: file issues on our GitHub repos instead:

Please DO post your asks, ideas, wants and needs for future features: We ARE listening, and we ARE grateful for your feedback!

    • Facilitate copying a command to clipboard

I often experiment with commands on the command line, and then want to copy them to cmd/ps1 scripts. This is usually unefficient, because most commands can wrap on multiple lines:

      C:\long\path\where\i\am\running\the\command> some-command -param1 c:\another\long\path -with-param2

To copy this command, I have to copy the whole two lines, including the prompt, paste in an editor, remove the the prompt, combine the multiple lines into one line, ensure I did not accidently delete characters other than the line breaks,...

A simple solution would be to have something that works with command history to send a specific command to the clipboard:

      Right click…

The word wrap functionality in the new console alleviates a lot of this pain. And for the rest, we do have backlog items to navigate, select, and copy discrete commands from the console window. —Rich

      • Console settings storage: Separate settings per window title?

From the blog post: "Settings in the console are stored in an interesting manner: The title of the window of the console represents where the settings are stored in the registry"

At least if I'm correct in my correlation, this has caused me a fair amount of confusion already, where I'm finding my console has seemingly random options enabled depending on how I open it, what it's hosting, etc. and makes it seem sometimes like the options I've set aren't sticking.

I find that the standard command prompt has different settings from the same command prompt launched from a different…

        • Windows Explorer Console Pane

Windows Explorer features optional Preview and Details panes, which can be toggled with a ribbon button and appear docked to the right side of the window.

I'd like to see a 'Console Pane', which opens a pane docked to the bottom of the window containing a Command Prompt instance which automatically updates the CWD as you move around folders in Explorer.

          Bonus points for keyboard shortcut.

          • Keep command line history

While the use of the command line is a rare thing for the end user, developers and server admins, its an essential routine that we do all the time.

I like the new console and like others support many more changes to come and here is one that I didnt see listed: history command, just like on Linux.

Say I type history and can see my latest X commands, then type &3 and it will automatically bring up command number 3 letting me edit it or simply hitting enter to run it again as it was. Simply pressing up and…

            • Custom key and mouse mappings

Note that another item on our backlog is to provide custom mapping of keyboard and mouse actions. Maybe you want SHIFT-CONTROL-@ to increase the font size, for example. This technical preview build hard codes all editing and action keys. If one of our choices conflicts with another app or assignment you've specific, go to the "Experimental Options tab" and disable the extended editing keys.

              • Font reset

In the CMD prompt I can change font, and the change is remembered. When I do the same in the PowerShell host, the font resets to "raster 7x12" in the next PowerShell Windows I open.

                    • Preserve the formatting of the command window

Pasting the contents of the clipboard loses all formatting - msbuild (and other programs probably) format (colourize) their output which makes them far more readable but only while it's in the command window.

Preserving the formatting when copying would provide the same benefits in the event the command output is copied and pasted to a file

                              • Shift click filename autopaste

Something that has always made me go "Hmm, why didn't they make that a feature" in other console and including the CMD in windows. When clicking a file name or holding ctrl, alt or shift and clicking the file name I'd love it if it filled the name in at the cursor immediately. That way I can work quickly with large weirdly named file names without having to copy/paste the file name itself.

It's just a small quality of life improvement I'd like to see.

                                • Resizing window moves window position

When resizing the window with the mouse, grabbing some edges cause the window to re-position itself. This behavior is present in both CMD and PowerShell windows, but does not appear to be in other applications I checked to verify if this was a conhost problem or a broader Win10 bug. Grabbing the north, northeast, southwest, west, and northwest edges of the window and dragging to resize will show this behavior. Grabbing other edges will resize the window correctly, i.e., the opposite edge remains anchored in its position so the window does not move along with the resizing operation.

                                  • zsh and github integration

When dealing with long directory names the cursor ends up half way across the screen. If you have tried zsh, it removes the path and gives statistics on the github status of the current directory.

At the very least a way to condense long directory paths would be nice.

                                      • Console Team response limited today

Hey all. It's awesome getting your comments here, and we've added several new items to our backlog because of it. Thanks for caring and helping drive console improvements in Windows -- we all want it to be great someday!

Wanted to let you know that we're offline from UserVoice for most of today so you won't see as many comments from us today. Absolutely not ignoring any idea discussions that help improve our work. :)

                                        Thanks, keep 'em coming. --Rich
