    • Run bash.exe from within VB6 Code by means of Shell() & Cmd.exe Please Support it for inter operability of Linux and Windows applications

      I am Wondering Why bash.exe is not running from Shell() function inside

      • _write fails to write non-ASCII characters to console(fd=1,2) after setlocale(LC_ALL, ".utf-8");

        SetConsoleOutputCP(65001);
        _write(1, u8"ENU中文\n", 10); // succeeds
        setlocale(LC_ALL, ".utf-8");
        _write(1, u8"ENU中文\n", 10); // fails
        ----
        Probably because the internal function 'write_double_translated_ansi_nolock' assumes that setlocale only supports SBCS/DBCS but not UTF-8, which is no longer true in RS4.
        The code file: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Source\10.0.17134.0\ucrt\lowio\write.cpp

          • ReadConsoleA & ReadFile & 'type con' fails to read non-ASCII chars when code page is 65001

            Note: ReadConsoleW works because it is 'code page-independent'. WSL works because of some internal workarounds.
            Re-inventing the wheel which is an iterator translating UTF-16 to UTF-8 each individual project is rather boring.
            This annoyes me a lot since I was interested in using UTF-8 in Windows console.

            • /etc/resolv.conf and secondary DNS suffixes

              I wasn't able to find an existing idea for this issue, so I am creating a new one.

              This is really a bug report, but the GitHub issue at https://github.com/Microsoft/BashOnWindows/issues/701 says to provide feedback here, so...

              There are two problems to report.

              One: the /etc/resolv.conf file is autogenerated when a new WSL session starts, but WSL only pulls in the DNS suffix for the primary domain for the "search" line. The result is that by default, only hosts in the primary domain can be resolved using short/unqualified names. If you need to resolve other short/unqualified hostnames in WSL, you have…

                • Supporting uclust on qiime1 for microbiome analysis

                  Please support uclust on qiime1 due to performing microbiome analysis from raw DNA sequencing data.
                  I tried to install qiime1 with miniconda3 on WSL (Windows10 Home, version 1709, OS build 16299.192, 64 bit operating system) recently and last year.
                  But it resulted in error like Mr. Schenck (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/qiime-forum/uY1rD38CFPM).

                  The error was that Uclust isn't supported.
                  I think that WSL can't recognize uclust version because WSL couldn't answer uclust version at that time when I asked it.
                  I would be grateful if you support uclust on qiime1 on miniconda3 on WSL.

                  1. Install qiime1 according to QIIME1…

                  • sudo npm install -g serverless

                    What makes wsl so useful to me and many others is being able to do web/cloud based development stuff from within Windows. At the moment I've had good results with things like the AWS CLI for linux and many other things, but serverless is not playing ball:

                    nickw@DESKTOP-OREBB4V:~
                    $sudo npm install -g serverless
                    /usr/bin/serverless -> /usr/lib/node_modules/serverless/bin/serverless
                    /usr/bin/sls -> /usr/lib/node_modules/serverless/bin/serverless
                    /usr/bin/slss -> /usr/lib/node_modules/serverless/bin/serverless

                    > serverless@1.26.1 postinstall /usr/lib/node_modules/serverless
                    > node ./scripts/postinstall.js

                    oh oh Error: EACCES: permission denied, open '/usr/lib/node_modules/serverless/node_modules/tabtab/.completions/serverless.bash'
                    Could not auto-install serverless autocomplete script.

                    • Support for IDEA exposure for the Linux dev tools like git and mvn, make etc

                      While the WSL is a great tool and is powerfull, there is a realy big gap were having now. I need to redudntly install stuff if I use an IDEA (like intellij or eclipse). To expose git to these tools. I can try to be creative with bat scripts to expose some of the bash native git. But then there is achance to get a "Cannot launch bash because another instance is running un-elevated. Elevated and un-elevated instances are not permitted to run simultaneously." response (and break your bat script).

                      What I would love to see a way to be…

                        Create a shortcut (like Ctrl+Alt+T in many Linux distributions to lauch the default console). Maybe when done in an Explorer window should it navigate to the folder?

                        • Support ctrl+c signals for windows applications launched from WSL/bash

                          In short: Make ctrl+c interrupt / kill windows applications launched from WSL.

                          In long: At the moment windows executables launched from bash / WSL do not terminate when I ctrl+c the process. For example I might launch a compilation step which uses a windows .exe, and then decide to cancel it and modify something first. After ctrl+C the bash terminal thinks the process is stopped and lets me begin typing new commands, but the compilation keeps running and spills output into the terminal. Any file locks etc. will also be held which might block further commands I want to execute.…

                          • Selecting text shouldn't pause program

                            Many people run into the unexpected behavior that accidentally selecting text on the console causes their program to pause when it tries to write to the output stream.

                            While text is selected, the console should continue to read from the output stream, and have some different way to provide stable text selection (freeze the scrollbar, or just render the text after the selection ended?).

                            Here's some other users who probably find the current behavior unintuitive:

                            • "where" command does not support translated directory names

                              Today I tripped over what's probably a bug (or at least a missing feature) in the "where" command.

                              I have a (third party) batch file that uses Java's "keytool.exe" and checks for its existence in the PATH with "where keytool".

                              Since I didn't have it on the path yet, I added

                              C:\Programme\Java\jdk1.8.0_45\bin

                              to the PATH via the system properties. ("Programme" being the translated German directory name for "Program Files".

                              I started a new command line prompt, and tested it: Running just "keytool" (from outside the Java bin directory of course) worked just fine . However "where keytool" said that it…

                                  • Make core dump files available in WSL

                                    When a process crashes on WSL it does not generate a core dump, even if the necessary configuration is in place.

                                    This is critical for debugging complex issues during development.

                                    • Support installing and fully uninstalling from CMD/Powershell

                                      I use Windows for about 25 years now but I never used the Windows store. Never had a reason to. I don't want to install and uninstall WSL form Windows store.

                                      I'd like to install it, or fullly uninstall WSL (Ubuntu in my case) directly form CLI. I assume I'm not the only one.

                                      By "full uninstall" I mean to delete all the file system, including files that were created customly , like som .sh files in the user's directory.

                                      • Support AF_PACKET address family (tcpdump/wireshark...)

                                        From https://github.com/Microsoft/BashOnWindows/issues/1628

                                        It would be great to get support for AF_PACKET, as some networking tools or software rely on that.

                                        Samples of tool that won't work without it:
                                        - tcpdump (socket: Invalid argument)
                                        - wireshark
                                        - some nmap functions
                                        - Scapy

                                        • Run services when Windows starts?

                                          In Bash, I can set services to boot on startup with something like this:

                                          sudo systemctl enable application.service

                                          However, it would be really handy if certain Bash services started when Windows started. (especially for web servers, database engines etc.)

                                          I know the way Windows and Linux does services is quite different but as an example, it would be great if I could start Windows and know that my local MongoDB server is all fired up and ready to go.

                                          Would love to know other peoples thoughts on this and if it's at all feasible?

                                          Thanks, Anthony
