Command Prompt / Console / Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

Greetings from the Windows Command-Line Teams, including the Windows Console and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) teams!

We’re hear to learn about the features you’d like to see in the Windows Console (the terminal app itself), Cmd and PowerShell shells, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) upon which several Linux distros now run!

Note: Please don’t file bugs & issues here: file issues on our GitHub repos instead:

Please DO post your asks, ideas, wants and needs for future features: We ARE listening, and we ARE grateful for your feedback!

  1. Support other POSIX systems, not just Linux.

    Don't just have plain Linux, but support the running of other OS such as FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenIndiana, not on WSL but another subsystem.

    • Command line needs more love for developers. It doesn't feel on par with the Linux/Mac development experience.

      Appeareance is simply ugly.

      Windows should strive to attract more talented developers. User Experience (for Developers!) also matters.

        • wslpath: output path in quotes

          Please add a feature to the wslpath WSL tool to output the converted path in quotes. This would allow easy piping even if the path contains spaces.

          Currently:
          $ wslpath "C:\Path to\My file.txt"
          /mnt/c/Path to/my file.txt

          Desired:
          $ wslpath "C:\Path to\My file.txt"
          "/mnt/c/Path to/my file.txt"

          • Bridge to Windows ssh-agent service

            At the moment I'm using putty on Windows together with its pageant tool, and inside WSL I use https://github.com/vuori/weasel-pageant , wich simply implements a bridge from inside WSL to use the pageant running on Windows.

            Switching from putty to Win10 builtin ssh and ssh-agent service makes this unavailable. Would be great to be able to reuse the Windows ssh-agent service from inside WSL, so I only have to store my key(s) in one safe place on Windows.

            • BUG: /etc/resolv.conf contents destroyed

              Using Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS from Windows Store, I find I need to add additional domain names to the search line. Editing the /etc/resolv.conf file as root, I find:

              # This file was automatically generated by WSL. To stop automatic generation of this file, remove this line.

              So I removed the line, saved my changes, closed and reopened the emulator. My changes do not take effect, the file was re-written again. Please fix this.

                  • /proc/sys/fs/file-max does not exist

                    I am attempting to run a bioinformatics pipeline using WSL. This pipeline relies on information within /proc/sys/fs/file-max.

                    On standard Linux distros, this file is a plain text buffer containing an integer. WSL does not appear to have this file.

                    [error] On machine: **omitted**, /proc/sys/fs/file-max does not exist.

                    Reproduce by running the following command on WSL and compare to a Linux system.

                    $ cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max

                    File does not exist.

                    A plain text buffer containing an integer should be present.

                    • Give API to measure the space that a string occupies

                      Created to raise support for Console issue #218 that itself is an extension of issue #57
                      From the issue OP: "Under a certain console/PTY, assume the font family/size is specified, give a string, and return the space (a bit mask of the character matrix?) it would occupy."

                      Closest implementation is wcwidth and wcswidth as mentioned in Issue on Linux. This API is required for anything involving zero width joiners, as are any scripts involving more complicated rules, or RTL scripts.

                      • relocate Temp folder

                        for person using SSD and have a large memory (for example, I myself), it may be better to relocate "Temp" folder to another location (e.g., just put them into RAM-disk)
                        but either using mklink/j or mklink/d will got an error 0x80070057 or 0x80070780 or something like that.
                        it there any method to relocate Temp folder?

                        • Toggle quick edit

                          Some apps (*cough* vim) support mouse but don't disable quick edit mode, so it is unusable unless I disable it for the whole console. Can we add a menu item to toggle quick edit mode for the current console?

                            • Make the per-directory case sensitivity flag (CaseSensitiveInfo) inherited to new child directories

                              I'm experimenting with moving my web development environment from MacOS to Windows 10. I wouldn't have considered the possibility a few years ago, but WSL and related linux compatibility improvements are looking really great! Unfortunately I have run into a bit of a sticking point around file system case sensitivity.

                              Since my projects require a case sensitive file system (deployed to linux servers) I was happy to learn about the new per-directory case sensitivity flag. The feature seems to be only partially complete though. Cloning my projects via git in WSL worked perfectly and all the directories were created with…

                              • Wrap a DLL as a .so

                                If you provided a wrapper for DLLs to expose them as Linux shared object files, WSL programs could call into them to execute functions that use Windows drivers.

                                The example I have in mind is that my Python code, running in WSL, could load one of these wrapped DLLs posing as a .so file, and execute code that makes CUDA calls running against the native OS drivers.

                                • Libsixel support for CMD/Powershell/WSL

                                  I would like native libsixel support as the only current way to run it is as per this comment https://github.com/Microsoft/WSL/issues/1099#issuecomment-248513013. If possible, this support would be for for all terminals. This would prove extremely useful in performing quick research without having to leave the terminal.

                                  • Add Posix ACL support to WSL and for drvfs mounts derive them from Windows ACL

                                    Add Posix ACL support to WSL and for drvfs mounts derive them from Windows ACL. It is possible to map Posix ACLs to Windows ACLs with some limitations. That would greatly enhance interoperability between windows applications and wsl applications. Using metadata to save posix permissions on drvfs mounts greatly reduces interoperability, since windows applications are not aware of posix permissions saved as metadata.

                                      • Option to change location of wsl

                                        By default wsl is installing to the system drive. In much cases this is an SSD with less space than a second drive like a normal hdd with much more space. If you use wsl for development of a Website or try to use WSL with an x-server for windows much space is needed to take advantage of it. So there should be an option to move the wsl and all files containing to a drive where an user has much more space than on it's system drive by default.
