Command Prompt / Console / Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

Greetings from the Windows Command-Line Teams, including the Windows Console and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) teams!

We’re hear to learn about the features you’d like to see in the Windows Console (the terminal app itself), Cmd and PowerShell shells, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) upon which several Linux distros now run!

Note: Please don’t file bugs & issues here: file issues on our GitHub repos instead:

Please DO post your asks, ideas, wants and needs for future features: We ARE listening, and we ARE grateful for your feedback!

  1. Run services when Windows starts?

In Bash, I can set services to boot on startup with something like this:

    sudo systemctl enable application.service

However, it would be really handy if certain Bash services started when Windows started. (especially for web servers, database engines etc.)

I know the way Windows and Linux does services is quite different but as an example, it would be great if I could start Windows and know that my local MongoDB server is all fired up and ready to go.

Would love to know other peoples thoughts on this and if it's at all feasible?

    Thanks, Anthony

    • Proper colours on terminal output.

Directory listings 'bible' and 'tests' for instance seem to have text background and proper text foreground colours switched https://twitter.com/windowsdev/status/979730837259411459. Text background colour should match background colour. Not very readable in current state.

        • Allow to set file permissions on NTFS partitions from WSL

Allow commands like chmod to set file permissions on NTFS partitions. Currently WSL supports a limited one way permission mapping from Windows ACL's to POSIX permissions but it needs to be 2-way. Many basic tasks like using ssh keys or working with git repos require being able to set file permissions. It doesn't even matter that much to which exactly windows ACL certain permissions map as long as they are consistent (e.g. setting perms with chmod and then getting them with stat should result in exact same perms).

This is a followup to this closed issue: https://wpdev.uservoice.com/forums/266908-command-prompt-console-bash-on-ubuntu-on-windo/suggestions/13309479-emulate-posix-compliant-filesystem-permissions

          • Support kernel namespaces and cgroups (for Docker, headless Chrome, ...)

Kernel namespaces are a Linux feature that enables sandboxing (used in things like headless browsers) and containerization (i.e. Docker).

It would be great if WSL supported those scenarios.

                • It isn't bad but needs work.

Packages like rsyslogd, should not by default attempt to do things that are unsupported in the system, like for example create directories in /proc, or attempt to set SO_TIMESTAMP on /dev/log.

                  • Allow Offline Licenses for WSL Distributions on the Windows Store

Currently, WSL distributions are not available with offline licenses, if they are added to a company's Windows Store for Business, they need to be explicitly assigned to end users. Making WSL distributions available with an offline deployment would help smooth deployment of WSL for enterprises that have locked down the Windows Store. The current workaround of manually downloading via https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install-on-server#install-a-linux-distribution isn't really great, there's no good way to keep track of updates, the distrubtion winds up in a directory we don't really want, etc.

Reflect Windows proxy setting by setting http_proxy, etc environment variables on WSL.

                      • Implement the && statement separator in Powershell

Support a series of commands separated by &&, just like CMD and Bash do. Example:

                        git fetch && git checkout origin/master && msbuild /m

Halt execution when any command returns a non-zero exit value, without making the user set $ErrorActionPreference

                        • Can I explicitly start/stop a Linux subsystem?

Hello, I'm a WSL user, sometimes I just start a bash window and bring up services such as MySQL or nginx on that window, but when I close the bash window, the background process(nginx or MySQL services) are gone, I think It's because the bash window is closed.
So Is there a way to let the background process running while all Bash windows are closed? Or can this be added as a new feature in the future? Thanks.

                          • Improve piping & interop syntax

Let's say you work on windows (cmd/powershell), and you want to pipe something to linux, do something there, and pipe something out. For example, copying to clipboard cowsaying all files/folders from C\Windows starting with 's'. (Yes. Very practical example)

Normally, you would use this syntax
                            C:\Windows>dir | bash -c "grep '\ss'" | bash -c "cowsay" | clip

It would work, but it is rather verbose & it needs to have those quotation marks, which is annoying.

I have used a nice utility ($.exe from https://github.com/neosmart/RunInBash), which makes this look a bit better:
                            C:\Windows>dir | $ grep '\ss' | $…

Would be a great thing to be able to set the interior padding in Powershell (to something else than the default of 1 px).

Other people have talked about this before, for example see: https://superuser.com/questions/1123126/adding-padding-to-powershell-window-just-as-in-css

                                • Add: SQL Server database support for WSL

I am using Ubuntu bash in Windows 10 falls creator update. I am so in love with it, I went ahead and created multiple .NET Core applications, including MVC web apps in Linux. Now what I am missing is support for Native SQL Server database in WSL. I want to use the WSL as a self contained Dev environment for .NET Core development in Linux without bothering about having another Linux VM or so.
Please add this feature so that we could at-least install SQL server developer edition in WSL and can build great data driven apps.

                                  • Please add CRIU Support

CRIU will allow restoring snapshots of running applications from Linux to WSL and vice versa. This will allow live migration of applications to ensure their high availability by resolving kernel issues like 0 Day attacks in kernels.

                                    • Double click to enter selection mode

Now the selection mode starts to work when you just click on a console window. Sometimes you don't want it, and it may cause losing of contents of the clipboard. It is better to use double click for entering this mode.

                                      • DrvFS support for "Shared Folders" in Virtual Machines

DrvFS is unable to access the "shared folders" of a host machine when running inside a VM like VMware.

We often use VMs for testing and shared folders are a great way to move data between the host and different VMs.

For details see https://github.com/Microsoft/BashOnWindows/issues/1959 and https://github.com/Microsoft/BashOnWindows/issues/1954

                                        • ssh-agent not persisting added identities

title stolen from superuser forum, this is a deal breaker as an admin, I need the ssh-agent to "just work" every time I open WSL. right now I have to run commands to add identities every time I reboot or restart bash. I just find myself going back to putty to log into hosts so I don't have to go through the process of | eval $(ssh-agent) -> ssh-add <username>.pem blah blah
