Command Prompt / Console / Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

Greetings from the Windows Command-Line Teams, including the Windows Console and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) teams!

We’re hear to learn about the features you’d like to see in the Windows Console (the terminal app itself), Cmd and PowerShell shells, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) upon which several Linux distros now run!

Note: Please don’t file bugs & issues here: file issues on our GitHub repos instead:

Please DO post your asks, ideas, wants and needs for future features: We ARE listening, and we ARE grateful for your feedback!

  1. A more specific instruction for heavy linux user

WSL is quite nice, as a trial of break the barrier between windows for mature APPs and linux for developer needs.

However, can you post a more specific instruction how to understand WSL. Especially when heavy ubuntu user trys to set some ubuntu features.

From where can we find the whole system files, to how to use copy and paste correctly in WSL. All these macroscopic or microcosmic details are the key to the usability of WSL

  2. Any plans for WSL on windows 10 phone?

As a developer, being able to do tiny things, or SSH to a server, with a device always within arms reach would be really useful. I think this would renew interest Windows phone devices.

  4. lrzsz support in wsl console

Most linux distributions offer the `lrzsz` package for uploading/downloading arbitrary files using the z-modem protocol. I use SecureCRT from VanDyke that allows:
    1. running a linux command such as `sz /etc/hosts` that drops the requested file(s) into a configurable local folder (e.g the windows desktop).
    2. drag'n'drop one or more files onto the terminal window invokes the `rz` linux command which receives the dropped files into the current linux folder (non-destructively) with their correct filenames.
This highly useful functionality can be used within nested SSH sessions to pull/push arbitrary files between local windows folders and remote linux machines.

  5. Shared memory between WSL and a Windows process

Being able to map shared memory between a windows and a WSL process could be useful for writing hybrid Win API/Posix applications. Currently this is possible with sockets, but shared memory could enable a tighter integration.

  6. WSL 2 make Hyper-V requirement optional.

If you look at the following project
    http://www.colinux.org/

They in fact got a Linux kernel running under windows without needing any hypervisor or cpu with hypervisor extensions.

This in theory could be 1 Linux kernel.

This would also mean you could fully deprecate wsl1 as it usage case would be fairly much covered by WSL 2 without the Hyper-V limitation. Hopefully this would free up resources to get wayland/x11 stuff working.

  7. WSL needs support for multi-user environments

WSL needs to be installable for all users of a machine, and optimally managable by a single admin of that machine (multiuser WSL-environment on a multi-user windows machine, where only one user has admin-privilidges for windows as well as WSL).
While WSL is a great feature that has been long overdue (it actually made it so that windows machines can now make sense also for research Institutes), not being able to manage WSL globally in a multi-user environment is extremely frustrating

  8. Paste.exe for copying contents of windows clipboard to STDOUT

I use clip.exe heavily; it is VERY convenient.

Having a companion paste.exe that copies the contents of the clipboard to STDOUT.

    Some examples of usage:

    # Copy clipboard to a file
    $ paste.exe > foo.txt

    # Perform a transform on the clipboard data
    $ paste.exe | tr , '\n' | clip.exe

    # Search the clipboard
    $ paste.exe | grep "email = "

  9. New "Linux" kernel in June?

Ok, I've got a question... how is the <quote>new linux kernel<endquote> going to affect this stuff? Because what I care about is full USB support, OpenCL and CUDA. If it's not going to fix those I'll drop this stuff and just install a real linux.

  10. GUI solution to manage wsl

1)It would be great if windows included a linux settings somewhere to manage installed kernels(future), distros, the accounts in those distros, and maybe change their passwords, etc.

2)Also in that settings it would be great to manage where the $home folder of this or that distro mounted at. Say i want it at user/LinuxHome, etc.

Windows provides all sorts of custom options through a gui solution, how come wsl is still a black box project?

  12. need ability to use uinput for simulated HID events

need the ability to run modprobe uinput but that fails with

    cicorias@cicorias-x1:~$ modprobe uinput
modprobe: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod.c:586 kmod_search_moddep() could not open moddep file '/lib/modules/4.4.0-17763-Microsoft/modules.dep.bin'
modprobe: FATAL: Module uinput not found in directory /lib/modules/4.4.0-17763-Microsoft
    cicorias@cicorias-x1:~$
    winver: 1809 17763.437

    What should happen is

modprobe uinput # runs and returns 0

    # from the /dev path
    ls -al |grep input
    drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 160 Apr 25 04:47 input
    crw------- 1 root root 10, 223 Apr 25 04:47 uinput
    # should see uinput listed

  13. Support for cross platform volume mounting in WSL

WSL has been great for dev so far. The first immersion breaker has been a big one, probably more because it's taken this long for something to happen.

So docker has been running great, making a nice one that uses multi stages took a while (Inventorious docker yo!). But I got almost all the way there, right up until volumes. I deep dived into learning about all the different kinds of volumes and hitting weird walls - like a volume mounting and zeroing out the contents where it goes. Strangely enough SO and other sites were pointing that my config…

  14. Chromium OS Support ! ! Rendering Graphics by new Chromium-based edge

I know that currently the WSL team is not prioritizing graphics.

But you can try to transfer data between the WSL kernel and the edge desktop (a special version with some features of the chromium OS), and then have the audio and graphics driven by Windows (a special version of edge should do, and you just need to make sure the kernel is "fully functional!" Support)

Then getting the sub-linux and sub-android systems of chromium OS to work well, is not only extremely convenient for developers (no need to restart switching systems or tolerate low-performance virtual machines), but also meets…

  15. Integrate with Crossmeta that provides BSD VFS

Allow integration of Crossmeta BSD VFS driver with WSL and many of the problems voiced here can be solved. The Crossmeta system provides all the VFS related POSIX syscalls with BusyBox already within WIN subsystem itself.

    Related Links:
    BSD VFS information:
    https://github.com/crossmeta/sys

FUSE for Windows. This is real FUSE port that supports Low-Level and High-Level interface of Linux fuse.
    https://github.com/crossmeta/cxfuse

It already supports mounting XFS, EXT2/3/4, HFS+

Supports loop back devices of files or VHD images(losetup)

Raw disk access with PnP support for USB or Cloud Disks

  16. support for ethtool

When you run ethtool it replies with "Invalid argument"

Exact command example: sudo ethtool -T eth0
Example Output: Cannot get device time stamping settings: Invalid argument.

This would be useful for testing timing applications e.g. LinuxPTP as a grandmaster to be used with the new W10 Client PTP support.

  19. printing from WSL.

I tried installing cups and cups-pdf but could not get it to work. lpadmin keeps giving me error message. Is that possible?
One workaound is using the shareware software printfil and instead of using lpr for printing, I redirect printed materials to the file that printfil listens to...
