Command Prompt / Console / Windows Subsystem for Linux

Shrouded in the mists of time, the Windows Console was created. For millenia, geeks and developers wrought their command-line tools but after a while, a great lacking was noticed. And so, legions of ever intrepid command-line mavens migrated to other shells and consoles, ’til but a stalwart few remained.

In Windows 10, with a deep rumbling, the ancient, weary, Windows Console heaved a great sigh and began to tremble. New features appeared, but slow was the (aparrent) progress.

But then, in early 2016, from under a rock evolved a group of new console dev’s. And then a PM. The journey to modernity had begun … again! WE’RE BACK! AGAIN!

We’ve spent a lot of time hearing and thinking about these improvements; there is a lot to improve as you’ve noticed. We have these items on our backlog, and thanks for validating. —Rich

      • Provide option to run command prompt remotely to another systems

Please provide an option to connect to another system (only if you have access :):d) and run commands remotely. In future this option can be extended say I can submit commands from my iPhone/windows/android mobile and no need to connect remote desktop for it.

        • Overtyping and Ctrl+X should delete selected text in the prompt

Right now if I select text that I've just typed and not executed, and press Ctrl+X, it acts like Ctrl-C and copies. It really should remove the text...

Same thing if I select text and type, obviously.

yes, indeed. this is an obvious one that we didn’t overlook, simply ran out of time before the Tech Preview. We expect to get this working soon. Understand that expectations can change due to internal “resource allocations,” but even so I’m giving it very good odds. :)

            • ReadConsoleInputA no longer works correctly with DBCS in Windows 10

May I report a bug here? For reference, the following URL was the original post, but now I reproduced the issue on Windows 10 now.

              http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsdesktop/en-US/3792a810-783a-4e36-ba82-e5c344bea8fb/readconsoleinputa-no-longer-works-correctly-with-dbcs-in-windows-81?forum=windowsgeneraldevelopmentissues

Previously ReadConsoleInputA (the ANSI version of ReadConsoleInput) reads DBCS input correctly as two keyboard events if a double-byte character is encountered.

For example, in Windows 7 and earlier, and with default code page for non-Unicode applications being 936, pasting the characters (menu Edit -> Paste) "桌面" would result in four events, sending in order D7 C0 C3 E6.

In Windows 10, there are still four events, but they are: D7 D7 C3 C3.

              Similarly,…

              • Console / cmd.exe add additional fonts

Add additional fonts and font sizes to the windows / cmd.exe console in windows 8+.
The current font selection needs to be expanded especially at smaller font sizes.
Nice to have: A setting in console window system menu to add 'open console here' right click menu command to windows explorer (without hitting alt/shift right click like in windows 8.

                • Facilitate copying a command to clipboard

I often experiment with commands on the command line, and then want to copy them to cmd/ps1 scripts. This is usually unefficient, because most commands can wrap on multiple lines:

                  C:\long\path\where\i\am\running\the\command> some-command -param1 c:\another\long\path -with-param2

To copy this command, I have to copy the whole two lines, including the prompt, paste in an editor, remove the the prompt, combine the multiple lines into one line, ensure I did not accidently delete characters other than the line breaks,...

A simple solution would be to have something that works with command history to send a specific command to the clipboard:

                  Right click…

The word wrap functionality in the new console alleviates a lot of this pain. And for the rest, we do have backlog items to navigate, select, and copy discrete commands from the console window. —Rich

                  • Console settings storage: Separate settings per window title?

From the blog post: "Settings in the console are stored in an interesting manner: The title of the window of the console represents where the settings are stored in the registry"

At least if I'm correct in my correlation, this has caused me a fair amount of confusion already, where I'm finding my console has seemingly random options enabled depending on how I open it, what it's hosting, etc. and makes it seem sometimes like the options I've set aren't sticking.

I find that the standard command prompt has different settings from the same command prompt launched from a different…

                    • Windows Explorer Console Pane

Windows Explorer features optional Preview and Details panes, which can be toggled with a ribbon button and appear docked to the right side of the window.

I'd like to see a 'Console Pane', which opens a pane docked to the bottom of the window containing a Command Prompt instance which automatically updates the CWD as you move around folders in Explorer.

                      Bonus points for keyboard shortcut.

                      • Keep command line history

While the use of the command line is a rare thing for the end user, developers and server admins, its an essential routine that we do all the time.

I like the new console and like others support many more changes to come and here is one that I didnt see listed: history command, just like on Linux.

Say I type history and can see my latest X commands, then type &3 and it will automatically bring up command number 3 letting me edit it or simply hitting enter to run it again as it was. Simply pressing up and…

                          • Font reset

In the CMD prompt I can change font, and the change is remembered. When I do the same in the PowerShell host, the font resets to "raster 7x12" in the next PowerShell Windows I open.

                                • Custom key and mouse mappings

Note that another item on our backlog is to provide custom mapping of keyboard and mouse actions. Maybe you want SHIFT-CONTROL-@ to increase the font size, for example. This technical preview build hard codes all editing and action keys. If one of our choices conflicts with another app or assignment you've specific, go to the "Experimental Options tab" and disable the extended editing keys.

                                  • Preserve the formatting of the command window

Pasting the contents of the clipboard loses all formatting - msbuild (and other programs probably) format (colourize) their output which makes them far more readable but only while it's in the command window.

Preserving the formatting when copying would provide the same benefits in the event the command output is copied and pasted to a file

                                    • add new parsing command

Batch is poor in parsing data...the only way to parse file or data is for loop it will be nice to add another powerfull command

                                      • Transparent title, opaque text with shadow

Transparent title, twice opaque background, even more opaque scrollbars and always visible text with shadow.
