Command Prompt / Console / Windows Subsystem for Linux

Shrouded in the mists of time, the Windows Console was created. For millenia, geeks and developers wrought their command-line tools but after a while, a great lacking was noticed. And so, legions of ever intrepid command-line mavens migrated to other shells and consoles, ’til but a stalwart few remained.

In Windows 10, with a deep rumbling, the ancient, weary, Windows Console heaved a great sigh and began to tremble. New features appeared, but slow was the (aparrent) progress.

But then, in early 2016, from under a rock evolved a group of new console dev’s. And then a PM. The journey to modernity had begun … again! WE’RE BACK! AGAIN!

  1. Owners of clink, ConEmu, Cygwin Bash

Anyone know where to contact the owners of these consoles / shells? Trying to reach out to assess compatibility. Meanwhile, I'll keep searching. Thanks --Rich

    • Resizing window moves window position

When resizing the window with the mouse, grabbing some edges cause the window to re-position itself. This behavior is present in both CMD and PowerShell windows, but does not appear to be in other applications I checked to verify if this was a conhost problem or a broader Win10 bug. Grabbing the north, northeast, southwest, west, and northwest edges of the window and dragging to resize will show this behavior. Grabbing other edges will resize the window correctly, i.e., the opposite edge remains anchored in its position so the window does not move along with the resizing operation.

      • zsh and github integration

When dealing with long directory names the cursor ends up half way across the screen. If you have tried zsh, it removes the path and gives statistics on the github status of the current directory.

At the very least a way to condense long directory paths would be nice.

          • Console Team response limited today

Hey all. It's awesome getting your comments here, and we've added several new items to our backlog because of it. Thanks for caring and helping drive console improvements in Windows -- we all want it to be great someday!

Wanted to let you know that we're offline from UserVoice for most of today so you won't see as many comments from us today. Absolutely not ignoring any idea discussions that help improve our work. :)

            Thanks, keep 'em coming. --Rich

              • Make typing ctrl-? emit a dir listing for the path before caret. Csh does this, and it is immensely useful when trying to complete pathname

Make typing ctrl-? emit a dir listing for the path before caret. Csh does this, and it is immensely useful when trying to complete pathnames and you don't know the next subdir to start the name for completion. Otherwise, you have to esc, type dir + path, retype previous cmd line, etc.

                  • Make [Ctrl]+[Delete] work like it works in text editors

In current tech preview it is possible to delete a whole word by using [Ctrl]+[Backspace] which is great! Unfortunately you cannot do the usual [Ctrl]+[Delete] that usually does the same but deletes the word after the cursor. It is just a counterpart of [Ctrl]+[Backspace] so I think it would be logical to implement it too. Thanks!
