Command Prompt / Console / Windows Subsystem for Linux

Shrouded in the mists of time, the Windows Console was created. For millenia, geeks and developers wrought their command-line tools but after a while, a great lacking was noticed. And so, legions of ever intrepid command-line mavens migrated to other shells and consoles, ’til but a stalwart few remained.

In Windows 10, with a deep rumbling, the ancient, weary, Windows Console heaved a great sigh and began to tremble. New features appeared, but slow was the (aparrent) progress.

But then, in early 2016, from under a rock evolved a group of new console dev’s. And then a PM. The journey to modernity had begun … again! WE’RE BACK! AGAIN!

  1. Windows Console options mockup

Some ideas that could be added in Windows Setting about the Windows Console:
Select a new default shell: Allow user to select PowerShell, Command Prompt or Bash as default shell across the system
Reset Windows Console options: Reset all users customizations in Console>Right Click> Default & Properties windows.
Apply following settings to Windows Console:
    - Use legacy console (As in Console Properties window)
    - Various edit options
    - Command History settings
    - Font settings
    - Text selection
    - Transparency (View better transparency option on uservoice)
    - Etc

Maybe can be added a section dedicated to Windows Console

    • Default terminal shortcut

Create a shortcut (like Ctrl+Alt+T in many Linux distributions to lauch the default console). Maybe when done in an Explorer window should it navigate to the folder?

      • Add: SQL Server database support for WSL

I am using Ubuntu bash in Windows 10 falls creator update. I am so in love with it, I went ahead and created multiple .NET Core applications, including MVC web apps in Linux. Now what I am missing is support for Native SQL Server database in WSL. I want to use the WSL as a self contained Dev environment for .NET Core development in Linux without bothering about having another Linux VM or so.
Please add this feature so that we could at-least install SQL server developer edition in WSL and can build great data driven apps.

        • Please add CRIU Support

CRIU will allow restoring snapshots of running applications from Linux to WSL and vice versa. This will allow live migration of applications to ensure their high availability by resolving kernel issues like 0 Day attacks in kernels.

          • Make core dump files available in WSL

When a process crashes on WSL it does not generate a core dump, even if the necessary configuration is in place.

This is critical for debugging complex issues during development.

            • color

Shell escape sequence to set color in console.

              https://github.com/chriskempson/base16-shell

This changes the current color scheme using escape sequence, and it's really handy, for example, you ssh into a server, and your color scheme changes (like red background for prod server)

                • Please backport WSL fixes addressed in Insider builds to current stable Windows (FCU currently)

There are a couple of fixes for things such as https://github.com/Microsoft/WSL/issues/2448 that are in the process of being backported. My request is just an extension of that to include ALL WSL fixes (current and future) to be backported to FCU until the next stable release. It makes no sense for organizations that need the fixes to continue developing but can't use Insider builds to just be forced to put projects on hold or harder simply because Microsoft only keeps the fixes to the latest Insider build only. If WSL is truly considered no longer beta and is getting full support…

                  • systemd-nspawn containers need cgroups

Windows Subsystem for Linux is one of my favorite Windows 10 features. But when I am trying to set up a special Linux environment with lots of compiled-from-source programs and dependencies, I'd rather not clutter it all up for everything else I want to do. The systemd-nspawn containers seem like a good solution. (I also see other ideas for LXC and Docker.) But when I try to use it, I get this error:

failed to determine whether the unified cgroups hierarchy is used: no
                    medium found

I asked the systemd people if there's any way to fix this. They said,…

                    • Shift+Tab / Backtab escape

iTerm (and presumably others) supports a ^[[Z~ escape sequence for Shift+Tab. I've been doing some work on PSReadLine to improve ANSI escape support, and this would be a really helpful addition for the completion commands.

                      • Duplicate / Clone the current console window similar to putty's duplicate session

I'd really like an option to right click the WSL console window and duplicate / clone it. Sometimes I'm working on a tab and I start a task then I decide to running another task in same path. It would be great if I could just duplicate the window and keep working from there.

Putty already has a similar feature for SSH Connections though, by pressing duplicate session

                        • Run WSL binaries in Windows without 'bash.exe -c'

It would be nice for Windows to be able to run binaries in WSL without needing to prefix 'bash.exe -c'. The main reason for this would be editor integration. For example, VS Code language extensions require the binary for the language to be in your PATH and often do not work without it. It seems like a waste to install the language in both Windows and WSL just to get editor integration.

Obviously, executables from Windows will still have a higher priority. Only when the executable cannot be found in the Windows PATH should it now attempt to run the…

                              • Make the Windows FS mounts under WSL have reasonable user and group

Right now the WSL suffers pretty severely from /mnt/c/ and others having all the files owned by root:root and permissions set to 777.

A *LOT* of tools will refuse to work with files with those permissions, files owned by root, or under the root account for security reasons. Some quick examples for developers: git and hg (Mercurial)

                                • vaapi / vdpau support for hardware video decode/encode acceleration

Command-line tools such as ffmpeg or gstreamer that deal with video can optionally use hardware acceleration for various codecs, depending on GPU support -- see https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Hardware/VAAPI

It would be great if the hardware acceleration for video already supported by Windows native drivers could be exposed via VAAPI and/or VDPAU interfaces to be used.

                                  • Would love to have MTR support

MTR is a very useful tool for Ops people. I would love to not have to fire up my Ubuntu VM to be able to run mtr.

Currently I get "mtr: unable to get raw sockets." when attempting to run it.

                                    • fcntl(F_SETFD, 0) failed:Invalid argument

After installing cpanm with sudo apt install cpanm, attempting to install Server::Start with

                                      cpanm Server::Starter

                                      hangs on an infinite loop:

stat("/tmp/DyfOTwwiZ6", 0x953298) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
                                      time([1512700980]) = 1512700980
                                      nanosleep({1, 0}, 0x7fffdde1f360) = 0
                                      time([1512700981]) = 1512700981
stat("/tmp/DyfOTwwiZ6", 0x953298) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
                                      time([1512700981]) = 1512700981
                                      nanosleep({1, 0}, 0x7fffdde1f360) = 0

This appears to be caused by the child process in the test dying because an fcntl call fails. To get more information, you can run

                                      sudo cpanm Server::Starter --look

                                      then typing

                                        • Assign groun `tty` to all /dev/ttyS* with read/write perssions

At the moment, a user is required to run an elevated command to access any of the new /dev/ttySx serial devices, or they are required to assign a group (or user) access to the serial device.
Any assigned permissions on /dev/ttySx will be reset to root:root with owner rw only when the bash.exe is closed and re-opened. Which can be come frustrating with automated scripts

I propose that WSL will assign the group `tty` (or `dialout`) to the serial devices. So that a user may add themselves to the group once and consistently have access to the serial devices without…
