Command Prompt / Console / Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

Greetings from the Windows Command-Line Teams, including the Windows Console and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) teams!

We’re hear to learn about the features you’d like to see in the Windows Console (the terminal app itself), Cmd and PowerShell shells, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) upon which several Linux distros now run!

Note: Please don’t file bugs & issues here: file issues on our GitHub repos instead:

Please DO post your asks, ideas, wants and needs for future features: We ARE listening, and we ARE grateful for your feedback!

  1. Support for sparse files in LxFS (flow type checker fails) WSL#1732

    This issue says it better than I can:

    https://github.com/Microsoft/WSL/issues/1732

    Real Linux:

    $ truncate -s 27927781376 foo
    $ ls -l foo
    -rw-r--r-- 1 ken ken 27927781376 Feb 27 21:00 foo
    $ du --block-size=1 foo
    0 foo

    WSL 15042:

    $ truncate -s 27927781376 foo
    $ ls -l foo
    -rw-r--r-- 1 ken ken 27927781376 Feb 27 21:00 foo
    $ du --block-size=1 foo
    27927781376 foo

    Hello,
    I want to use process my webcam stream via OpenCV. Apparently there is no support for webcams yet, as /dev/ is pretty empty.

  3. OpenCL & CUDA GPU support

    It would be nice to have (relatively) easy access to the dedicated GPU's on our Win10 PC's, and OpenCL support for the AMD Drivers & CUDA for NVidia drivers etc.

    What I am thinking on specifically (although there are many many uses for it and CUDA support) is hashing functions that are lackluster within windows itself, but benefit immensely within Linux and Unix.

    Cryptocurrency mining for example, is known to be much faster on Linux systems than Windows. Do you see any support for OpenCL and/or CUDA in the future?

  4. i386 support

    Currently it does not seem to be possible to execute 32-bit Linux ELF binaries in WSL environment. Generally this is not a big deal if the source of the program is available in a way or another, however, there is quite a lot of 32-bit proprietary tools that are distributed in binary-only form, and currently those are unusable within WSL.

  5. Integrate with Crossmeta that provides BSD VFS

    Allow integration of Crossmeta BSD VFS driver with WSL and many of the problems voiced here can be solved. The Crossmeta system provides all the VFS related POSIX syscalls with BusyBox already within WIN subsystem itself.

    Related Links:
    BSD VFS information:
    https://github.com/crossmeta/sys

    FUSE for Windows. This is real FUSE port that supports Low-Level and High-Level interface of Linux fuse.
    https://github.com/crossmeta/cxfuse

    It already supports mounting XFS, EXT2/3/4, HFS+

    Supports loop back devices of files or VHD images(losetup)

    Raw disk access with PnP support for USB or Cloud Disks

  6. Any plans for WSL on windows 10 phone?

    As a developer, being able to do tiny things, or SSH to a server, with a device always within arms reach would be really useful. I think this would renew interest Windows phone devices.

  8. lrzsz support in wsl console

    Most linux distributions offer the `lrzsz` package for uploading/downloading arbitrary files using the z-modem protocol. I use SecureCRT from VanDyke that allows:
    1. running a linux command such as `sz /etc/hosts` that drops the requested file(s) into a configurable local folder (e.g the windows desktop).
    2. drag'n'drop one or more files onto the terminal window invokes the `rz` linux command which receives the dropped files into the current linux folder (non-destructively) with their correct filenames.
    This highly useful functionality can be used within nested SSH sessions to pull/push arbitrary files between local windows folders and remote linux machines.

  9. Support windows 1809 on the new terminal

    The new terminal only has support for windows 1903, as it has no related features and windows server 2019 is based of 1809, it would make sense to support 1809 for the new terminal.

  10. Windows Terminal: title bar and tabs match background

    Add a property in the profiles.json so that the title bar and tabs match the background, i.e. colour and acrylic setting including opacity. Essentially make it minimal and clean, much like Hyper's title bar.

  13. Terminal session logging

    Windows Terminal is something I am very excited for and would love to see the ability to log terminal sessions to a '.log' file, or at least a switch for specific sessions, be it local or ssh or even specific ssh sessions.

  14. Adding built in scripting languages aside from bash and cmdEnv

    It's nice with you can just download a quick script be able to see the code that's running and it works without any real hassle. you just download one bash/ps/.... file and you can see what it's doing and run it without being scared of any types of pesky malware or virus being installed alongside what you wanted.

    so my suggestion is to add a multitude of other scripting languages that can be ran as a self building environment or a nice way for anyone to create nice scripts and maybe even bind them to keybinds or aliases without a…

  15. Remappable shortcuts

    Have shortcuts be remappable, e.g. mapping "copy" to `Ctrl`+`Shift`+`c` and "paste" to `Ctrl`+`Shift`+`v`. This would help users customise the terminal to correspond to what they might have been using on Linux subsystems or similar, or to avoid shortcut clashes with other programs.

  17. Open bash in current folder from context menu

    I would love a right-click option in a folder to open the current folder in a WSL distro. right click to open in the folder C:\Users\account would open a terminal in /mnt/C/Users/account

  18. Cursor blinking support

    There should be an option allowing to have the cursor blinking :)

    Seeing <marquee> was mentioned in the build Terminal session I'm sure this may already be on the todo, but juste to be sure I made a uservoice :)

  19. I think it would be great if the calculator could live in a tab in the terminal. I often have to convert units and mostly use the calculator

    I think it would be great if the calculator could live in a tab in the terminal. I often have to convert units and mostly use the calculator qalculate. It would be an advantage for me to have all the tools I need in one application.

  20. Support for installation via chocolatey

    I understand the terminal is planned to be delivered via Windows Store. But, if possible, I'd love if the team would consider installation via chocolatey as well.

    Chocolatey is a popular tool that aims to be like apt-get for windows. I would love to be able to run "choco install WindowsTerminal" and then after be able to run "choco upgrade" to keep it up to date. Many pieces of software do this and I think you'd have enthusiastic community support to help implement it if need be(myself included).

    The think I like about chocolatey packages is that I export those…
