Command Prompt / Console / Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

Greetings from the Windows Command-Line Teams, including the Windows Console and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) teams!

We’re hear to learn about the features you’d like to see in the Windows Console (the terminal app itself), Cmd and PowerShell shells, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) upon which several Linux distros now run!

Note: Please don’t file bugs & issues here: file issues on our GitHub repos instead:

Please DO post your asks, ideas, wants and needs for future features: We ARE listening, and we ARE grateful for your feedback!

  1. Provide documetation for building custom distributions (distro.tar.gz)

    Please document the process for creating a custom distribution. (distro.tar.gz files)

    I would like to build distros for items that are not supported on the Microsoft store and customize existing distrobutions.

  2. support for ethtool

    When you run ethtool it replies with "Invalid argument"

    Exact command example: sudo ethtool -T eth0
    Example Output: Cannot get device time stamping settings: Invalid argument.

    This would be useful for testing timing applications e.g. LinuxPTP as a grandmaster to be used with the new W10 Client PTP support.

  3. Scroll mode shortcut key -> <Scroll lock> key mapping

    Alt + Space + E + L is so complex.

    Also Sometimes (Ctrl+)PgUp, (Ctrl+)PgDown key not work. especially on WSL(bash), mysql, netsh, docker.

  4. Unix-style commands in classic cmd

    We have a WSL with Linux environment, we have aliases for it in PowerShell - why don't we make aliases for cmd? Since even Windows 98 I accidentally type 'ls' in cmd and all I got is "'ls' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file". Why don't we bring some basic unix commands in cmd like in PowerShell?

  5. i386 support

    Currently it does not seem to be possible to execute 32-bit Linux ELF binaries in WSL environment. Generally this is not a big deal if the source of the program is available in a way or another, however, there is quite a lot of 32-bit proprietary tools that are distributed in binary-only form, and currently those are unusable within WSL.

  6. Optimize disk I/O speed

    Due to administrative requirements, I cannot disable windows defender in the WSL directory - right now, all disk I/O is **very** slow (10x slower than native windows) - is disk I/O already fully optimized? 5-10x slower sounds pretty bugworthy.

  8. Use F2FS for VHDX creation on SSD drives

    It could nicey improve I/O performance, and is more optimised towards flash drives.

  9. WSL2 to simplify running linux containers on Windows

    Right now I am running docker containers on an Ubuntu virtual machine with Wireguard enabled, and that VM itself runs on Hyper-V. I am wondering whether WSL will

    - be supported on Hyper-V,
    - support Wireguard (ideally within containers)
    - ship with a default container runtime

    ultimately this would greatly simplify the scenario and and essentially turn linux containers into a first class citizen.

    Thanks, Joachim

  10. Please make long doubles work in WSL

    Long doubles are not working. For example, the pow function gives wrong results. This bug has been known for 3 years. Please fix it. The loader could set the FP control word differently depending on the type of executable. See https://github.com/Microsoft/WSL/issues/830

  11. To be able to open tabs would be great.

    I am stuck using a MAC at work because the terminal is far superior. with Linux/MAC I can open multiple tabs in the terminal, with windows WSL I have to open a bunch of windows. Sometimes I will has 7 or 8 tabs open at once... Adding tabs to the command terminal would be an excellent upgrade. I work with a bunch of DevOps and TechOps people and the vast majority would rather be using windows, but because of the lack of features with the command box they are stuck using MAC's

  12. Support for sparse files in LxFS (flow type checker fails) WSL#1732

    This issue says it better than I can:

    https://github.com/Microsoft/WSL/issues/1732

    Real Linux:

    $ truncate -s 27927781376 foo
    $ ls -l foo
    -rw-r--r-- 1 ken ken 27927781376 Feb 27 21:00 foo
    $ du --block-size=1 foo
    0 foo

    WSL 15042:

    $ truncate -s 27927781376 foo
    $ ls -l foo
    -rw-r--r-- 1 ken ken 27927781376 Feb 27 21:00 foo
    $ du --block-size=1 foo
    27927781376 foo

  13. Add acrylic (frosty blurry background) to transparency

    When the transparency is enabled, I wish the acrylic effect could be enabled and blur the background and ease the readability.

  14. WSL: Add Hardwaresupport for Video capture devices

    Hello,
    I want to use process my webcam stream via OpenCV. Apparently there is no support for webcams yet, as /dev/ is pretty empty.

  15. OpenCL & CUDA GPU support

    It would be nice to have (relatively) easy access to the dedicated GPU's on our Win10 PC's, and OpenCL support for the AMD Drivers & CUDA for NVidia drivers etc.

    What I am thinking on specifically (although there are many many uses for it and CUDA support) is hashing functions that are lackluster within windows itself, but benefit immensely within Linux and Unix.

    Cryptocurrency mining for example, is known to be much faster on Linux systems than Windows. Do you see any support for OpenCL and/or CUDA in the future?

  16. Integrate with Crossmeta that provides BSD VFS

    Allow integration of Crossmeta BSD VFS driver with WSL and many of the problems voiced here can be solved. The Crossmeta system provides all the VFS related POSIX syscalls with BusyBox already within WIN subsystem itself.

    Related Links:
    BSD VFS information:
    https://github.com/crossmeta/sys

    FUSE for Windows. This is real FUSE port that supports Low-Level and High-Level interface of Linux fuse.
    https://github.com/crossmeta/cxfuse

    It already supports mounting XFS, EXT2/3/4, HFS+

    Supports loop back devices of files or VHD images(losetup)

    Raw disk access with PnP support for USB or Cloud Disks

  17. Any plans for WSL on windows 10 phone?

    As a developer, being able to do tiny things, or SSH to a server, with a device always within arms reach would be really useful. I think this would renew interest Windows phone devices.

  19. lrzsz support in wsl console

    Most linux distributions offer the `lrzsz` package for uploading/downloading arbitrary files using the z-modem protocol. I use SecureCRT from VanDyke that allows:
    1. running a linux command such as `sz /etc/hosts` that drops the requested file(s) into a configurable local folder (e.g the windows desktop).
    2. drag'n'drop one or more files onto the terminal window invokes the `rz` linux command which receives the dropped files into the current linux folder (non-destructively) with their correct filenames.
    This highly useful functionality can be used within nested SSH sessions to pull/push arbitrary files between local windows folders and remote linux machines.

  20. Support windows 1809 on the new terminal

    The new terminal only has support for windows 1903, as it has no related features and windows server 2019 is based of 1809, it would make sense to support 1809 for the new terminal.
