This is great feedback. We are excited about the Xamarin acquisition and the .NET ecosystem around cross-platform apps. We are currently looking at this and similar feedback on how we can improve the experience of working with both Xamarin.Forms and UWP implementations of XAML.

We agree; our branding is not simple, but it’s worth noting that neither is our situation:

WSL is the name of the Windows Kernel infrastructure that installs, loads, executes, and manages ELF64 binaries. It’s important to note that it’s a key goal that WSL remain distro-agnostic.

Note that, until you run Bash.exe (part of WSL) for the first time and download and install Ubuntu, there IS NO Ubuntu anywhere on your system!

Now, referring to the user-mode tools delivered as a packaged distribution as WSL would also be inaccurate and misleading. This is why, when we’re talking about the user-facing experience – the thing that you actually interact with – we call THAT thing Bash on Windows … because we went through every other permutation and idea and couldn’t come up with anything as recognizable, comprehensible, or “short”, even though I think it’s still too long!

              Typically, when referring…

As Chip said, UTF-16 is rather baked into the stuff we do. The console host does use UTF-16 somewhere in there. :P We just have the matter of dealing with code pages throughout the history of computing existence that causes us heartburn every time we think about how to fix this. :( It’s definitely something that we would like to look into on our backlog.

This also needs better fonts or font freedom for the command line

I don't think this is a good idea. It'll be another ActiveX style situation.

A .NET -> asm.js/WebAssembly compiler so you can run your .NET code in the browser would be better, and that would be more of a request to the .NET teams.

F# team just posted an update on their GitHub. https://github.com/Microsoft/visualfsharp/issues/1096

This is still a work in progress. One key thing from that post is some of these features and fixes have already been underway for months. While we’ve been investigating F#-specific issues in .NET Native, the team has continued to improve .NET Native. One feature known as “universal shared generics” is likely to have improved .NET Native’s support for F#, even without that being an explicit goal of the feature.

Windows already has a startup script, both for CMD and PowerShell...

For CMD, add the script to the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\AutoRun.

For PowerShell, create a script at $PROFILE.CurrentUserAllHosts.
