Now that we’re delivering multiple distros via the Windows Store, we’re beginning the transition the branding of this feature to just WSL from “Bash [on Ubuntu] on Windows”.

In the future, instead of running “Bash on Ubuntu on Windows”, you’ll just run Ubuntu or openSUSE, or SLES, or Fedora, etc. and they’ll run on WSL.

We’re updating our docs and will start to transition our messaging over the coming few months.

As Chip said, UTF-16 is rather baked into the stuff we do. The console host does use UTF-16 somewhere in there. :P We just have the matter of dealing with code pages throughout the history of computing existence that causes us heartburn every time we think about how to fix this. :( It’s definitely something that we would like to look into on our backlog.

This also needs better fonts or font freedom for the command line

I don't think this is a good idea. It'll be another ActiveX style situation.

A .NET -> asm.js/WebAssembly compiler so you can run your .NET code in the browser would be better, and that would be more of a request to the .NET teams.

Thank you for the suggestion and the spirited commentary. We are not adding this capability in the 8.0 release, but know that it is high on the consideration list for future Windows Phone releases.

F# team just posted an update on their GitHub. https://github.com/Microsoft/visualfsharp/issues/1096

This is still a work in progress. One key thing from that post is some of these features and fixes have already been underway for months. While we’ve been investigating F#-specific issues in .NET Native, the team has continued to improve .NET Native. One feature known as “universal shared generics” is likely to have improved .NET Native’s support for F#, even without that being an explicit goal of the feature.

Windows already has a startup script, both for CMD and PowerShell...

For CMD, add the script to the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\AutoRun.

For PowerShell, create a script at $PROFILE.CurrentUserAllHosts.
